Wifey (no pic) and kids are down at the lake at the in-laws for Christmas since I worked yesterday and will through the rest of the week. Woke up around 4:30 and went to the kitchen to get something to drink. We have really large windows on one end of our kitchen. As I came around the corner in view of those windows, there is perp #1 in all black and a ski mask looking right at me. Luckily, my retreat path took me past both kids' rooms, son's room was clear. I got to daughter's room next to ours and there is perp #2. We had her shade half open so I could clearly see him.

Our bedroom was right next to hers so I called 911 and retreated to our closet and kept them on the line until local police arrived. We have no weapons in the house, but I at least snagged a large kitchen knife on the way out of the kitchen. I was still scared as fook. LE swept the house and there were no signs of anything broken to get in, they just saw footsteps. The wife confirmed the Ring activity at the front door. Maybe timing was such they saw me and left. Whatever it is, the family won't be back until Saturday so I thought I might try to tighten up a few things. Any suggestions on what to do?

* small arms? are air-powered weapons feasible? storage location?
* locks, type and operation?
* windows, some are locked, some aren't. you could fit a cooler through the window in our front door. no clue why realtor whore that sold it to us put that in.
* any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have had three heart procedures and been in the hospital for about two of the past three weeks, just got home Tuesday. I about spent the rest.

Cheers!

That's some scary stuff. We've got 4 ring cameras on our property. At night, they're set so the Alexa announces that there's motion at whichever part of the property so if anyone has any bad ideas, I'll at least be awake and aware of their presence before they make it up to one of the doors or windows. The wife no pics and I have also discussed buying a firearm for home protection. We live in a nice neighborhood, but you just never know. I'd feel safer with that than I would w/ the large Buck knife I've got in my nightstand.

Glad you're doing okay, and glad that the wife and kids weren't home for that. That's some scary shit.

Damn Jason, that had to be a bit traumatic. I use a Remington 870 12 gauge pump for home protection as I don’t go deer hunting anymore…maybe get a dog?

Leave a few lights on?
Close all window shades?
TV on ?
Hit the after Christmas sale at Billy Bob’s AR15’s Unlimited Store?
Put Proud NRA Member stickers at all entry points?
I always leave at least one kitchen light and one small family room lamp when I am there by myself. Wifey needs it pitch black to sleep. I am horrible about window shades. Our front ones are closed, but the sides and back of the house are generally open. I am thinking about a small service pistol that I could keep locked on a shelf in the closet, about three steps from our bed.

If I get one again it will be a shotgun and most likely pump. Partially loaded without one in the chamber and safety off. Stored under the bed in a safe with RFID or similar lock.

Why did your wife have to confirm Ring activity at your front door. Do you not have the app on your phone?

I assume you can communicate over your doorbell. A little pep talk with the perps would usually be an effective deterrent.

Now this is just me being me. Not that we live in a real fancy place or anything, but it is a good neighborhood for the KC metro. Seemed like overkill and I pretty much hate having to fook with anything technology related.

Good chance it’s somebody who knew your wife was going to be out of town, or at least saw her packing and leaving.

A full-sized shotgun might not be as practical as you’d hope. I once woke up to an intruder walking through my bedroom and retrieving my full sized shotgun from under my bed wasn’t going to be a quick and easy task had I needed to do so. So I bought a 9mm Beretta pistol.

If you’re going to go the shotgun route, I’d recommend a riot or trench style shotgun with a really short barrel.

Some of the service pistols I have seen don't appear to pack as much force as I was thinking. If I have to discharge it, I don't want it to take six shots to stop the altercation. I like the 9mm idea.

A tactical (ie. short barrel) .12ga pump shotgun is really the best option. If you want something more compact, maybe a .45 long colt revolver that will also shoot .410 shotgun shells with buck shot. A standard handgun means you had better be pretty proficient with it, particularly in a potentially dark and dangerous situation.
Cleanup would be brutal, though. 😳

We have a house alarm. Might be worth it.

Did I understand correctly that some of your windows don’t lock at all? That would be priority number one for me.
The windows all lock, we are just awful at locking them. If I were a thief, the practical entry point to the house would be from the back patio into the back family room. Trees surround the whole area providing cover and escape routes in three directions. Access to large slidable windows too.

That's why I bought a .45 auto. One and done.
And the noise will keep the fooking nosey neighbors inside.

OMG I check every door and window and every slider every night and I’m in an okay neighborhood. I even check to make sure my garage door is down, then I deadbolt the door to the garage. I turn on porch and walkway lights.
Please tell me you will lock up tight. During the winter there’s absolutely no reason all windows can’t be locked when it 15 degrees outside!
