FWIW...MY TAKE ON GAME 1

Ah...so you’re predicting that those teams will be “dumpster fires”?

Based on what?
Illinois always plays so undisciplined, not too concerned bout them. I'll wait to see how Rutgers looks this year b4 judging them, but didn't they lose a decent player due to off court issues?

Rutgers lost a good player to transfer.

“undisciplined”...?

I don’t know, man. Seems kinda vague. Illinois fouls a lot but a bunch of freshman are a year older. I don’t get “dumpster fire” at all. Heck, Pomeroy has them rated higher than us, and to listen to some here, we’re a sweet sixteen team.

Connor will be serviceable against teams that don't crank up ball pressure, bracket Garza and are late getting to the shooters. There aren't many of these teams on Iowa's schedule. When the offense stagnates, you need a PG who can create off the bounce and / or score a little. Joe has a huge learning curve ahead of him and as much as I would love to think he can be that guy at some point this year, it's likely a development year for him. This puts Iowa in the all too familiar position of relying almost exclusively on the 3 when teams deny post feeds. A healthy Pemsl could help tremendously, especially if he has developed a mid-range.

Just my take from watching Illinois last year in that they don't always value the ball and seemed to chuck up a lot of quick shots.

I like what Pemsl can bring with "old man" type play in the post. He's never really shown that he has a mid range game, not sure there's much chance of it happening now.
Hoping Joe T. matures quickly, but not expecting it.

Overall, for the first game, I saw a lot to like. First career game for several guys and first game after red-shirting for a couple of others. No Pemsl yet either. Talent and potential seem to be there, especially if JBo is a go all season.

But one of the most glaring faults, which is nothing new under Fran, is the repeated failure to block out on rebounding. It happened often and allowed one SIUE guy to grab the rebound from three Hawkeyes on multiple occasions. That is a huge swing and will continue to cost Iowa games unless it changes. Iowa almost never blocks out, and I just don't know what Fran's philosophy is on rebounding. Based on history, it looks like it's just "get the ball," and that hasn't worked, and it will not work. Block out, rebound, and this team can be really good.

Iowa has been a top flight rebounding team under McC in the Big Ten
2011 4th 2012 5th 2013 1st 2014 1st 2015 1st 2016 3rd 2017 4th
2018 4th 2019 8th

Last season was a major outlier. I think this will change with the return of Cordell. As the advanced stats show Cordell has not only been a very efficient scorer, shooting a very high percentage from the field, but a very efficient rebounder as well. Obviously Jack is not going to become an effective rebounder so Cordell is a must.

Replayed the game last night and particularly liked the way we switched on defense. The three-quarter court press was really good especially in the first half. I saw a couple of nice traps near half court. Really bothered their ball handlers. On the zone I enjoyed the way we cut off the baseline. Also, as I watched CJ, I thought he reminded me of someone else and for reasons I can't explain, I came to the conclusion of a Matt McQuaid or a Ryan Cline.

Here is my take from what I seen first two games.

1- We have three high level healthy players. LG is a beast on the block but at some point he has to throw it out against a double and triple team. He had Joey W wide open twice and just flat out looks him off like a black hole. He can for sure do work on the block but once in awhile he has to read the defense and kick it out against double and triple teams. Joey W is a stud plan and simple. Enjoy him it wont last hes gone after this year. CJ Frederick wow. I saw him as I have mentioned before in high school games and kid is an absolute steal. He is so much like Gasten its crazy. I just can not get over his feel for the game he makes the right read every time and plays with a chip on his shoulder we have not seen especially on defense from any previous white guards. Kid must of had five deflections and bball IQ is just off the charts. He is going to win Iowa hoops fans over with that attitude. These three must be on floor at all times.

2- JoBo- wow was not expecting him to look this good this early. He brings senior leadership and swag that only Jordan can bring. If hes 85 percent healthy he can help us get to tourney for sure.

3- Conner Im a fan. I know some of you pick out flaws but I truly believe if he was not Frans son we would see the things he does well. If Jordan does play Im a fan of playing these five together for a 4-6 minute stretch a half. The shooting of Jordan CJ Joey might be the best in country.

4- Disappointed in some of the lack of IQ by some kids that are hyped as " High bball IQ guys". CJF just make the game so easy for others. So does JW. They pass up good shots to create great shots for others. Honestly surprised how creative and the feel CJ has however others miss JW JoBo CJ wide open against zone may times. You have to know where 1- Joey 2 CJ 3 JoBo are at all times and get them the ball when open.

5- Jack needs to play down low on the block. We have three of the best shooters in the country and have so many other guys shooting threes instead of moving ball. We can do that against lesser comp but not the good teams.

6- I think Joe T showed some positive signs, Patrick will be a player, Ryan looks the same as Ryan and I think Pemsl is better than both Jack and Ryan.

Great to be a Hawk!

For the most part, you are seeing what you want to see. I don't think we're world beaters by any means, but it seems you came in with a negative slant ahead of time and then just used what you saw to confirm that, true or not.
Not true at all, but you can believe what you want to.

Iowa isn't going to out-athlete many teams on their schedule so they have to find and maintain the elusive chemistry that has been very inconsistent in Fran's tenure. There are going to be off nights no doubt, but the extended scoring droughts fueled by turnovers, bad shots and sloppy D have to be reduced. Fran also needs to utilize TO's so a 8 point run doesn't turn into 20-2.

I hope I am wrong but I see an L coming tomorrow night. DePaul is not very good but they have the ingredients that have historically given Iowa fits. I anticipate some out of body performance from Charlie Moore.

How many times have they played since Fran has coached?

The four guard lineup with Garza was pretty interesting tonight.

Benefits of having a player like Connor who can be a ball-handler and play on the wing in a 2-3

We are going to have a lot of options when it comes to style of play.

I didn’t see this mentioned but Garza looked quicker defensively, which is huge considering he was a bit of a liability on that end of the floor last year. It will be nice to have 4 experienced post players, so much of basketball is angles, and experience helps to recognize when you need to move and how quickly.

The ball movement last night was much better than last year. CJ is going to be an overall upgrade from Moss. Garza looks like a senior. If we find consistent scoring from one more player outside of JW and LG, we’ll be a top half big ten team. Perhaps that’s JB.

The ball was always moving, very fun to see a team share the ball so much but only turn it over 12 times. Sharing the ball becomes contagious and can really save teams when their individual athleticism might not be up to snuff. If we can play clean and shoot well, we will have a shot against the big boys.
