The Iowa job became too cushy. The contract extensions Barta handed out were ridiculous. There are two ends of the college sports business spectrum when it comes to hiring/firing/retaining coaches: those who fire coaches on a whim and go through one new hire after the next (see Nebraska football) and those who retain coaches interminably with little consideration to merit outside one or two decent seasons (see Iowa football and basketball).

Barta was there to fundraise. In order to get the most out of the donors, he needed stability in the programs -starting with coaches. Hence, the outrageous extensions handed out.
