Garza free throws

He shot a high % last year but seems to be around 60% this year. 3 big misses down the stretch were costly.

Played the entire 2nd half with 3 different guys guarding him. He and Weiskamp carried us with some help from Joe T. No C.J. really hurt us as we had no other scorers. Those guys scored all our points in the 2nd half I believe.

I think it's pretty clear he was exhausted by games end.

And when you are exhausted, your legs go and its pretty easy to miss FTs.

In the 2nd half, Iowa was down to 7 players.

I applaud those 7 players who almost pulled this game out, on the road, against a ranked opponent.

* Garza
* Weezy
* Connor
* Joe T
* Ryan
* Pemsl
* Evelyn

He's a liability in close games at the end right now. Use him as a decoy because they're going to hack him. 64% on the year and 6 of 13 last I saw today and might have missed a couple after that.

Really miss JBo at the end of games, and having Frederick out hurts too.

15 turnovers to their 7 and poor free throw shooting will get your ass beat most of the time, Home or Away.

Hawks played OK overall. Good effort.

He’s not a liability in close games as he’s by far our best player and dropped 34 today. He was tired as Penn St ran 3 different defenders at him and he played the entire 2nd half. Would you suggest taking him out and replacing him with Pemsl?

Love the guys but they gagged down the stretch. Lukas FTs and poor defense and confused offensive sets. Great effort but....it’s a L

Absolutely right, not a liability at all. In fact, he’s our best offensive option at any time really. Leading scorer in the big ten, as a junior. He will score more times than not any time we get him the ball and he gets a one on one matchup. We have no one like him. Not to mention, I don’t think I’ve ever, ever seen anyone play as hard as him. Yes, that includes some very infamous hawks. Faulting garzilla in any way today I don’t think is the answer. You win some you lose some.

Yeah he struggled from the line but honestly he is a stud and you need him to touch the ball constantly. It would be nice to get him a rest but they can’t. Not having him touch the ball constantly would be a liability I think

He's been very inconsistent this year but I suspect he's worn out down the stretch
He is a good free throw shooter, his mechanics are off right now. Just about every miss was right. Same thing happened last year as well and his dad helped to correct his mechanics.

Hawk in Ark are you serious? The pace of that game was incredible. It’s not like Iowa walks the ball up the court. Or Penn State either. You’re ridiculous. Yes, big news but 7 ft guys weighing 250 lbs playing the whole game get tired. I’m guessing you were such an athlete you did not.

Don’t question him. He watched the last 10 minutes (game clock) of this game. He knows what he’s talking about.

^yes. Every poster here is like Michael Jordan and bo Jackson combined, they just chose not to ever play and only post on line now as a way to share their skills and knowledge. No poster here ever missed a shot, turned it over, made an in game mistake, etc. perefrct games, every time.

Right, he shot 80% last year, he’s shooting just under 40% from 3 this year. It’s not like he’s a big man with no touch, just need some slight adjustments, I think he needs to slow down a little. Seems like he’s rushing some of the free throws but I think he will improve from the line as the year goes on.

I'm 5'8" so I have no idea what it's like to shoot with long arms but to me I've always thought he needs to shorten his free throw stroke. Shoot more from his shoulder than from over his head, I'm guessing if he hadn't shot ~80% at a freshman the coaches would have worked with him on this.

The misses suck but it's no where near a 3 point game without him

If you can't make free throws at the end of close games I don't care who you are, you're a liability. You have fouls to give and no more time to play, it's hack city, and any smart Coach understands this. A 3rd grader with an average IQ knows these things.

Wasn’t he money from the line last year? Or am I misremembering?
winning tonight I don't think he was out of the game hardly at all especially in the second half we are running on fumes. They don't have anybody to help him out. I about choked when Bardot said that pencil was doing a solid job. It's plus-minus must be terrible. It was much better as freshman year than he is now

I know it was fast-paced and yes I absolutely used to get tired when I ran up and down the court / field but these guys are at a different level and receive a much higher level of training. Shooting 50% at the line, with many misses in crunch time is unacceptable. It's tough but he should be better than that - he IS better than that.

You shouldn't change your motion specifically for one shot. If he shoots over his head so he doesn't get blocked in games, he should do that.

Agreed. I think Garza’s FT shooting is more mental at this point than anything. Today given the conditions and his extended playing time, it could have been a mixture of both. Either way, the game is a PSU blow out without Garza.

I'm talking strictly at the end of close games, which this one was. A 64% free throw shooter and dropping is an opponents dream.

Garza doesn't have to touch the ball every offensive possession, that's why you have teammates, and preferably those that can make free throws in crunch time. He can be on the floor and should be, but he doesn't have to touch it just to get hacked.

I strongly disagree, the free throw stroke does not need to be anything like your jumper (except that both need good mechanics). It needs to be a compact, easily repeatable motion that doesn't fade when tired.
