Former Chicago Mayor,
Lori Lightfoot, called the remarks "disgusting," saying transgender youth in California would feel hated by their governor. Washington Representative Pramila Jayapal urged Democrats not to give in to anti-transgender rhetoric, while Equality California said it was "profoundly disappointed and angered," accusing Newsom of adding to the fear and hostility transgender people already face.
When asked Thursday about Newsom's comments, House Minority Leader
Hakeem Jeffries said he had not seen them but emphasized that Democrats opposed "unleashing sexual predators on girls throughout the United States of America."
Earlier this year, Democrats overwhelmingly voted against a bill that would ban transgender athletes from competing in women's or girls' sports. Party leaders criticized the legislation, calling it the "Child Predator Empowerment Act" and argued that it could result in adults inspecting children's genitals to determine their eligibility for sports.
California's governor was joined by conservative activist Charlie Kirk for the first episode of his new podcast.
