Gilman wanted to bring RBY as his training partner?

Haven't seen this addressed in it's own thread, though it's possible it happened in another thread, but on the last FRL, CP and WIllie said that Gilman wanted to bring RBY as his training partner to Worlds, similar to how Dennis brought Spencer Lee the year prior. Bill Zadick refused to let that happen. Does that mean RBY is still possibly available? Did this happen before Chief's post about how RBY to PSU was a done deal? Interesting little tidbit, regardless.

I don't know if it was Bill Zadick that didn't allow it. I think CP and Willie were speculating on that. They can correct me if I'm wrong.

What would his reasoning be? Did he consider it an attempt at recruiting on Iowa's behalf that he didn't want USA Wrestling picking up the tab for? Closet Penn State fan? Not likely, especially after their golden boy Taylor berated him immediately after losing this team spot to Cox.

My understanding of Willie and CP's statements were that Bill Zadick said no, and I think they explicitly said that. My interpretation of the subtext was that Bill Zadick did not want them using his World Team as a recruiting tool, though they didn't explicitly say that, I don't believe.

I'll have to relisten to it pod.

Yeah I could be wrong. That would make sense though. But on the other hand, RBY competed at the senior level this summer so it seems strange to draw the line there.

If you are going to look at it from that perspective the we used the Olympic games to maintain our relationship with Spencer. Why is this any different?

Spencer was already a verbal when Gilman took him as his training partner. But Burroughs took Mark Hall to Worlds when he was still uncommitted.

I know it's been beaten to death, but does anyone actually know why RBY is sticking with PSU? He's clearly a good fit in our lineup at 133. At PSU he will have Teasdale and possibly Nick Lee to contend with at 133/141. We have the best lightweight coaches in the country. The best training partners in the country. Proven success in college at both 125 and 133. And the path to World and Olympic teams goes through IC at 57kg. And soon 61 kg after Clark is healthy (and maybe McDonough). Still hoping for him and Hidlay.

I'm not trying to piss in anyone's Wheaties, but I think we had a shot at him until it got out that he was going to visit Iowa. I think Cal gave him the 'If you visit Iowa I will pull our offer including the huge Olympic training check.' Everyone wants information. Sometimes it bites you when it gets out.:(

If that's true then I hope he doesn't get splinters riding the pine. I'll cheer like hell for him in 5 yrs.

Hmm that is an interesting theory. However, I don't know if it fits with this timeline and when actual dollar amounts can be discussed with recruits. You may very well be right and I have certainly heard of similar situations happening in other sports, mainly football. I believe it was Brady Hoke at Michigan who had the hard line stance of once a recruit verballed to Michigan, if he took any other visits to other potential schools, he would have his offered pulled from Michigan. Obviously, football recruiting is a different beast entirely and it would seem to be much more complicated in RBY's case here, but there is some history of situations like this to support your theory.

Like KJ and that Cali kid whose at Oklahoma now.

It really wouldn't be a surprise at all if Cael said that, it's pretty commonplace

Or just point to Kirk Ferentz. He yanks schollys from verbals if they visit elsewhere after the Iowa verbal.

Is that his stance with every verbal commitment? I had not heard that before somehow. Interesting.

If the verbal communicates with him well, it seems as though he is acceptable of it. But if the verbal does so without communicating it to Kirk or is entertaining a new school, he very consistently pulls offers. See any thread on the FB board about Eno Benjamin's recruitment last yr.

Maybe he wants to win a team title?

Maybe. But if someone has goals of winning NCAA titles in the near future and international gold down the road, team titles seem secondary to where you will best develop your skills. The reason I asked was because someone mentioned that he was close to Terry. I thought maybe he was also close with one of the PSU coaches or possibly Mark Hall. Teasdale being from PA I can kind of understand. But for a top AZ lightweight, it seems Iowa is the place to go.

If you have something to back that up then that is great info. IF you are just throwing something at the wall to see if it sticks, that is quite different.

Spencer Lee was a 2 or 3 time world champion when Dennis chose him. He and Hall were both elite age group wrestlers and so it makes sense from the olympic coaches stand point to take them and help groom them. RBY not so much, at this point in time.

Didn't read this thread, but here is the deal- CAEL SQUASHED IT! He cried and wouldn't allow it.

Logically, why would Cael be worried about it? He will be there during all the training and the tournament, to be able to cut off any "inappropriate" activity. So probably more likely to be what lookleft says-he isn't at the same level as Lee and Hall were.

I'm guessing RBY feels better about his chances of cracking the PSU lineup than you do.

I think both RBY and TEASEdale are indecisive and wishy washy. That makes either a risk if you're going all in. I wouldn't be surprised if either jumped ship from wherever at some point. Contrast that with Teske, who I think is an "all in" guy regardless of choice. Less talent but less risk and, potentially, more upside for that reason. I really hope we can get him.

Stupid talk.

Sooooooooo I ran into Gilman tonight while wearing his sweet shirt.. perfect timing! I felt cool and douchey at the same time. Great guy. I asked about Pd3, and to summarize he said he was a decent guy. He didn't give it away, but I'm pretty sure pd3 is a done deal.

If that's true, I reckon the lines for ice cream will be pretty long during 197.

Ha, well it's ironic it was in an ice cream line

I believe I was very clear that this was an opinion. That's why I wrote "I think" rather than "I have credible evidence," or "someone close to the program told me." You can be assured I will never have "great info," but i also believe that I didn't just "throw something against the wall." I still believe it happened something like that. Especially with Cal scrambling trying to get Suriano back at the same time that he hears Roman is going to visit Iowa.
