Go figure, Richmond getting destroyed by the Friars

Are you kidding? Anybody who knows anything about basketball saw exactly this coming. Richmond, 6th place in the A-10, is not a very good basketball team. Winning their conference tourney is the only way they made it into the NCAA event. Providence is OK, but not great either. After all, Creighton beat the Friars by nearly 30 about 10 days ago in a game that included a 31-2--that's not a typo--a 31-2 run by Creighton.

It took a totally inept Iowa performance from everyone for Richmond to eke out a four-point win. As I write, Providence leads that same Richmond squad--all those veterans, ya know--by 25 with about 12 minutes left. You play well and lose, what can you say? But you play like you never saw a basketball before and lose to a Richmond in the NCAA Tournament . . . there's plenty to say, and none of it is nice.

What Providence is doing is what I figured Iowa would have done on Thursday, after setting the Big 10 Tournament offensive records that they did. I'm glad I've reached the age where I accept come what may, and not let sports results dictate how I live. But this tournament couldn't go any worse. It's been like dagger after dagger.

Iowa played opposite of the way they played in February to end the season and the B1G tourney, tentative, soft, and afraid to make a mistake which led to mistakes, and lose. If they played attacking ball like they’ve been playing, they win by 10 to 20.

Exactly. Wtf. I was pissed, but thought maybe Richmond is a solid team, but now that I saw how bad they're losing, it really sucks.

Iowa played tight and didn't make adjustments. I also think Fran did a poor job of trying to find a combination that would work. Isn't that supposed to be the benefit of a "deep" team?

Rest easy tonight. Providence would have wipe Iowa off the floor.

You need guards, and Iowa is a long ways from.

If Iowa continued to play like they did for 6 weeks, it would have been a tight game with Providence.

It's been repeated numerous times, but fans can more easily accept just running into a team that is better and they beat you while playing your best.... But a lot of what-ifs after laying giant turd on Thursday.

I'll never pick Iowa to win another NCAA Tournament game, and their opponents will need to gladly pay me a hefty sum to make me watch Iowa lose going forward.

Done with the nonsense. Either pay me and make my bracket look a little better or go yourselves and let Iowa win.

That's how it's gonna be from now on.

Iowa looked lifeless physically but more importantly mentally. Really whish BIG10 would start the tournament on Monday instead of Wednesday or at the very least on Tuesday to allow teams more rest and time to level out emotion from winning. Had to get up for four games in four days. Won the championship and less than 48 hours later on a plane halfway across the country to play a early game day one of National tournament. Should have won but this no doubt contributed to the poor play IMO.

Yep, picking against Iowa has served me well in past tournament pools. I gambled on them this year. It's not happening again.

If Iowa some day busts my bracket because they win, then great. Otherwise my picks stand a better chance of being correct. Win-win.

Providence loves the Wilson ball

Maybe Providence did some extra work shooting the Wilson ball?

Iowa had Kris, Keegan, Jbo, PMAC, Sandfort, CMAC, Perkins all take 3pt shots---- five of the seven players were 0 for the game. With seven guys shooting, bad luck to have 5 of them not able to make a 3pt bucket.

It really came down to bad 3pt shooting + Keegan was not carrying the team due to his ankles tweaked and Richmond strategy to double Keegan and stick with JBO meant the other guys needed to step up...and they didn't.

I only do one pool... picking against Iowa seemed like it might be a jinx...my 1st revision I had Iowa losing to Kansas, but I ended up having Iowa getting to the final-4.

Betting against Fran getting to the sweet16 continues to be the smart money bet.

You have to be able to play defense when the shots aren't falling. Fran teams have NEVER EVER been able to do that. The hardware speaks for itself.

Look at Illinois. They absolutely sucked against Chattanooga. Couldn't hit a shot to save their lives. But they held that team to 20 2d half points and won.

That's what it takes to compete for EE and better -- O and D in top 20 efficiency.

Defense was not the reason we lost. Richmond shot under their average. Offense was abysmal. Worst game since @Rutgers

Did Richmond play in a conference tourney?
They did and I stated Iowa should have won, not making an excuse. Emotions are tough to judge and everyone handles them deferent. Iowa just looked exhausted and I think playing that many emotional games with little turn around contributed. That said, someone needed to step up and right the ship to gut out a win, but no one did. That was the most disappointing thing to me. Keegan had 21 but it was his worse game since Iowa St. He didn’t seem to want the ball.

Keegan rolled his ankle. That affected his game.

Teams look exhausted when they are losing and energized when they are winning. It's weird how that works out. :)

You miss the point...if you have an elite Defense, ..you impose your will and make a mid major shoot worse than you do becaus you have better athletes. They outshot Iowa on percentage basis.

Iowa defense while improved, was still not a top50 or better defense.

Look at the starting lineup ... Rebraca, PMAC, and JBO ---three minus defenders. PMAC is a minus defender at the forward positon---not quick enough/doesn't play physical. You can say PMAC made shots, but the two forwards for Richmond went 11-22 from field and 10-12 from foul line and did bulk of the damage. The Richmond PG went wild while a JBO a minus guard defender played 33 min.

The Richmond center was a stiff and he wasn't much of an inside player, so we got lucky because post defense has been a problem all season.

Yes, making a few more 3pt shots would have made it an Iowa win, but these outlier games of bad shooting are part of what happens when you rely on 3pt shots. Just like the game vs Northwestern was outlier on Iowa making 3pt shots.

Great teams find ways to win grind games.
