God I used to remember the excitement of going to the NCAA tournament

Now we sit back and it really has no meaning whatsoever. As it’s still fun to watch it sure doesn’t feel fun not seeing your team playing… hoping we get a coach to ignite a fire and get Iowa into the tournament every year.
Iowa has never gotten "into the tournament every year." Outside of Michigan State, no Big Ten program can make that claim.

Oregon and Richmond were evidence enough that Fran was never going to get Iowa anywhere in NCAA tourney. The Auburn game we lost with Kris Murray--- I knew we'd lose.

I think we need to see TV rights money go down before any reforms are possible in college sports. I'm boycotting non-Iowa sports. I will have a long wait.

I haven’t done brackets in several years and instead of watching all day, I barely watch. I even let my wife convince me to watch Wicked tonight instead of basketball. Portal and players only caring about what they’re getting paid has killed the love. Plus decades of Iowa kicks to the balls.

The key to watching this thing is to bet on a couple of games at a time. Maybe parley a few. I feel a little more invested. I’m talking tiny amounts of cash.

I had a $1 bet that was riding on Michigan -2.5 last night and I was on pins and needles most of the last 10 minutes

I swear, you have to be the most miserable person in real life. every time I open up these boards, I see a post from you whining or complaining about something.

Well as Michigan or Wisconsin has shown you, all it takes is the right hire. West Virginia is coming in on McCollum. Just go grab him and don't mess around like Ohio State did with the guy they should've hired but let the right guy go to Michigan instead. Make the hire right after Drake ends their season.

A lot of woe is me in here.

But, I do agree that it hasn’t been fun in a long time. Even when we made the tourney we knew we weren’t going far. Since Davis was let go, we’ve had the following seeds.

2 - 2021
3 - 2006
5 - 2022
7 - 2001, 2005, 2015, 2016
8 - 2023
10 - 2019
First four(11) - 2014

Five total wins. No consecutive wins. And the three seasons we were seeded 5 or better we didn’t manage a single win. That is having the rug yanked out from under you every season for a quarter of a century. Only one of those 2nd round losses was even close, OT against Tennessee in 2019, every other one was a blowout. No wonder there is little excitement.

I felt this way big time during the end of Alford/Lickliter/beginning of Fran years when it felt like they'd never get back. Completely lost interest.
Same for me. I haven't watched an Iowa mens basketball in 2 years. Completely took the wind out of my sails and I have lost interest in watching basketball altogether with the exception of the caitlyn run.

1979-89 was a great run. 10 of 11 years Hawks were in NCAA tournament and competitive.
One final four, two elite eights, four sweet 16's.
13 Tournament wins and lots of devastating losses.
Without Lute coaching and Ravelings recruits, Iowa has won I believe 12 NCAA tournament games since 1989.
One sweet 16 :(

I'm not watching the tourney except for Drake games. When they are eliminated, I'm done watching. I have lost most of my interest in mens BB. I hope Iowa is relevant again with Ben as their coach.

Sorry but this years tourny is flat.
Power schools have skimmed a lot of the talent from smaller schools...and those power schools are blasting those smaller schools
In years past the small schools edge was senior-laden mature teams developed over years vs younger talented power schools.
Now these power schools are buying those mature players from those smaller schools.

Result is fewer upsets and more blowouts.
Now, the 2nd round will be mainly beefed up power schools vs each other and should be some good games but I fear that 1st two day magic is gone...we will see if it is a trend.

I was wondering the same. Top 4 seeds 16-0 in the first round. There were a couple 13 and 14 seeds that won last year, but it seemed mainly chalk as well.

It was honestly kind of a boring first round.

11 NCAA wins in the 36 years since 1989. 4 in the last 15 (and one of those was a play in game).

Zero big ten titles in the 46 years since 1979.

It's a solid thesis. I think it will prove true. Analytics improvements have also largely eliminated significant under and over seeding "errors."

+kentucky, Arizona (twice) and wake forest (I believe at least two of those were #1 seeds)
We were WAY underseeded and lost to national champion Kentucky in the second round. We played them tougher than anyone. Woolridge year. I still blame Lon Kruger for coming up with the defensive game plan Pitino stole for that Iowa game.

I miss the last-second heroics the NCAA Tournament use to produce. That is the one thing that's really been killed off in the last several years.

That's why the first round has always been my favorite. If those big upsets mostly become a thing of the past, that'll definitely take something away from "March Madness".

I don't want it to become like the first round of the college football playoff. Yawn.
