Gonzaga

Timme the Gonzaga center doesn't look like he is worthy of holding Garza's jockstrap.

Suggs injury hard to tell. Just as easily a common ankle injury
I haven't watched Gonzaga yet but looking at their big men and roster do they have anyone who can stop Garzilla? Not really any big men or am I missing something?

Jay Bilas said at the top of the broadcast that Drew Timme was the best scoring Big Man in the country.

I literally lol'd. And then I looked up his stats, he avg. 9 pts let game last year. He's off to a good start this year, but still.

Did anyone else hear that or am I making stuff up?

He scored 25 (11-15) vs Kansas and 28 (11-16) vs Auburn. 17 tonight. Surely he was talking about this season.

Jay Bilas is a hip yes man. As soon as he does an Iowa game Garza is the best. Then he will tweet about the evil NCAA and get his base all fired up.

Few is putting Suggs back in the game. Seems indefensible to me. They're only 3 points down without him. Is this game that important to them?

maybe he isn't hurt very bad and overreacted. Suggs himself wouldn't go in if he thought
he was at risk.

One thing that could help the Hawks is I don't think Ayayi & Nembhard are great at guarding the ball. Fredrick & Wieskamp should be able to get to the paint.

Iowa will have to score a lot of points to beat Gonzaga (duh). But yes, to your point, Iowa will have to make a good % of 3's and Garza would need to have a big game. Iowa likes to play fast, but a slower pace would benefit Iowa in this game. WV gave Gonzaga some troubles early by playing physical defense, but Iowa is not equipped to play defense like that at all. Huggins wants to turn the game into a street fight, but once Gonzaga adjusted they played really well.

Thankfully Suggs is OK, but I still think it was a mistake to put him back in. He was noticeably limping and I didn't think he added much for the Zags in the last quarter of the game. Few said Suggs talked him into it. That's not the way it's supposed to work, is it?

The times they are a changing

Did not see this or the Baylor game. I saw the zags in an earlier game, and I thought Timme was very good, especially on offense, and Suggs is one of the best true freshman guards I have ever seen. He is a very complete player with skills way beyond his age.

He's one of the top rated freshmen players in all college basketball, a sure fire 1 and I'm out of here after this season player. You think Few told him that he has to earn a starting spot? LOL He'd leave in a minute if he didn't have his way. He's not at Gonzaga to get a educational scholarship but only to get this season over with, win a National Championship, go pro next year and make a ridiculous amount of money from some NBA team.

Too bad for you Suggs earned his spot, it's very easy to see that. Keep the cliches going though, you're good at that.

Only possible way Iowa wins the game is if they outscore Gonzaga.

I dare anyone to argue with this point. It is the way almost every sporting event in history has been determined. The team with the most points wins. Got it. LOL

BTW: I know what you mean. But I also know what you said. :)

I know what I said too Aristotle. It’s funny, even though it’s an old joke. Of course, I was drinking pretty heavily at the time I wrote it, which I’m gonna do again in less than an hour. Get ready for a Hawkeye beat down. And prepare for next week. ;)

As good as Suggs is already, I doubt that earning a starting spot and minutes was a concern. While you are probably right about his future, your post might suggest some character attributes about Suggs that aren't true. I am sure that Few is in control of his program and expects all of his players to do what he says. I know nothing about the kid, except my eyes tell me he is already a great player as a teenager.

I have been watching Suggs play for a couple years, and his high school team Minnehaha Academy is just loaded with D1 studs. I watched them play Cretin Durham Hall last year in person at the beginning of the season when Suggs was just starting to get his basketball legs. He had just come off a tough last minute upset in the state football championship in which he was a dual-threat QB and could do it all on the field. One of the best high school athletes I've ever seen. Anyway, Suggs got COMPLETELY outplayed by Tre Holloman, an underclassman PG from CDH that Iowa is recruiting (although I see we aren't one of his favorites). A couple great kids still on Minnehaha's team are Chet Holmgren (class of '21 #1 overall national recruit) and Prince Aligbe (class of '22 top-100 kid with an Iowa offer).

I'm soooo spoiled by all the great HS hoops in MN. Kids I've seen in person in recent years are either stars, starters, or future starters for teams like Gonzaga, Baylor, Colorado, Marquette, Minnesota, Duke, Wisconsin, and North Carolina.

Forgot to mention - I believe Suggs was seriously considering playing in Europe for 1 year after high school and then jumping to the NBA, like some other kids like LaMelo Ball have done. Glad he didn't!

So how long is the Gonzaga team probably on ice? Our game with them is 2 weeks away, isn't Big Ten protocols 3 weeks. Would we even be allowed to play them at this point?

This sounds like precaution, not that they can’t play the game. If the rest of the team continues to test negative, they’ll be playing long before our matchup

They've got Tarleton St., Southern, Northern Arizona, and Idaho before our game. I suspect they could beat most of them with their third team and the student managers.

It's not an easy choice, and they could certainly get run out of the gym, but I'd rather see Iowa try to push the pace.
Trying to play a slower, half court focused game takes away Iowa's best advantage offensively and frankly does them no favors defensively either as they are a poor half court defensive team.
I'd take the chance on pressing, pushing the pace, giving up easy twos and trying to get 'zaga to have to rush back down court to defend the 3 ball. Maybe they can get some of their key players tired enough to be off on their shot and make mistakes.
We know Iowa is going to give up a lot of buckets. Why have fewer possessions and make each one more valuable?
