I worked for a large company in Coralville that hired Deloitte to assist with our migration to SAP. An army of H1B Indians arrived shortly thereafter and proceeded to plod and bungle their way through the project, which ended up taking twice as long and costing almost twice as much as originally planned.
There are plenty of US-born software engineers capable of coding SAP, but Deloitte brought these guys in at ~ 55% of the market rate, had them work 6-7 days per week (70-80 hours) and treated them like shit.
About 18 months into the project the programmer with whom I interacted the most was scheduled to fly back to India to see his wife and meet his toddler for the first time. Two days before his departure his boss told him he wouldn’t be allowed to leave because the project was so far behind schedule. I asked him what he planned to do and he replied, “There is nothing I can do. If I leave they will fire me and pull sponsorship of my visa. Then I would never work again.”
These guys were nothing more than indentured servants - exactly what the billionaires want.

These kinds of visas are supposed to be used to bring in talent when there are shortages of American workers. Does anyone believe there is a shortage of people in the US willing to work in tech for 60-100k starting with potential to make more? Why is it that these kinds of jobs are so competitive for Americans to break into while they obviously can be filled with middling talent from India? No reason we couldn't stairstep American workers into these roles rather than requiring them to have 4 year computer science engineering degrees. Have community colleges train people in what is needed and direct them to the correct certifications. Come down hard on any company bringing in outside labor when Americans are willing and able to work at the same level.

But what these visas are really about for people like Elon is working them 70+ hours a week which really turns that job into a low salary job. The threat is if you quit or are terminated you have to go back to India. This is essentially America's version of what middle east countries do to rope in manual labor from India.
