I know there is a huge thread about Grothus, but that seems to be anything but news. Just in case you are wondering why I started a new thread.

Back to the thread topic, I listened to the IA Wrestle podcast and according to Tony Hager, Grothus made weight at the Midlands and he said we should see him wrestle this weekend. Hager said that it won't necessarily be at the duals, it could just be an open tourney.

And there is no link on their site, so I will just post their tweet

Thanks for the information. Anything is better then the comedy event on the Grothus thread. Go Hawks!!!

I'm throwing this out there bc I really don't know the answer but if Brody is going to Opens and it doesn't pan out aka injured the shoulder again. Can he get a medical redshirt?

There was talk here about a 6th year but not sure how that would work.

I would expect Brody to be traveling on the Illinois trip. He's not some unproven true freshmen. We're taking about a RS senior, NCAA qualifier with a lot of good wins against solid competition.

I'd sure love to see Brody competing at Illinois, but even though he's a seasoned veteran, I could see the staff starting him slowly at an open tournament where he can knock off some of the rust and get into a groove. Certainly not because he's not up to the task of taking on quality competition, but more just as a way to let him wade into the water gradually, so to speak, rather than just jumping into the deep end right away.

Brody's situation is pretty unique due to having to prove himself healthy, and able to compete at a lighter weight. I don't know if he will go to Ill or not but the open tourney makes sense. Why rush him since he is a RS senior with a lot of good wins, right? I think the staff has done a great job of doing what's best for Brody.

Good point, I only list tournaments where there are D1 participants (according to the schools schedule). If we can confirm that there are ANY Hawkeye (or any D1 team for that matter) participants in that tournament, or any tournament, I'll get that event added to their schedule.

Iowa has some guys going to Dubuque.

Brody does not meet the criteria for a medical redshirt, which is called a Hardship Waiver by the NCAA. It is my understanding that a waiver of the 5-year rule (different than the Hardship Waiver), which gets a wrestler a 6th year, requires that a wrestler miss "more than 1 season of competition" due to "incapacitating physical...circumstances", among other criteria.

I tend to disagree with the "throwing him off the deep end". Im with edquinn on this one. I dont see any benefit of going to this tourney to face some D3 kids. Either Brodys shoulder is 100% or its not. If its not then he doesnt wrestle anyone D3 or D1. But the fact he will go must mean its 100% because otherwise he stays in the stable. Its not like his shoulder wont hold up vs a D1 starter but it will be good enough to wrestle the guy from Simpson or whatever.

As for his weight. I get wanting to see it first but shouldnt that already be pretty much 90% tested already. Im not an expert on the practice room but i find it hard to believe that the coaches havent set up a few 7 min simulated matches vs say Turk, Ryan, Kem, or a Kadel type. Those guys are as good of talent as Brody would see in the Flash Open so I guess I dont see the knocking off the rust being an issue at all. Kemdawgs offense will knock your rust off. Cartons motor will knock you rust off. Trying to score on Sorny everyday is a better rust knocker offer than what most other D1 programs have in their room.

I get the caution approach but if he ready to wrestle then hes ready to wrestle. Are they being cautious just for the sake of being cautious? Why send out Carton or Ryan and potentially give the Illini that win at 141 in a meet that looks like they matchup well and could beat us?

I guess its pretty black or white to me. Either he is beating Ryan and carton in the room in simulated matches right now or he isnt. If he is, get him on the bus to Champaigne and win this meet. If he isnt then i get going to an open. Thats what im reading into this decision unfairly or not.

If we lose 141 and the Illini meet and Brody tech and pins his way through that open your going to have a hard time on monday expaining to me that the coaches got this one right. They obviously know more than any of us but we shall see.

What's with the new thread? Anyway I didn't know till now but I posted a golfing dill with Brody and a youngster on the other thread.
