Guards scoring

We beat MSU without Valentine, yes. We also lost to Indiana and barely beat Drake, and lost to Purdue last year. My point is: we've won a ton of games over the last two years, and we've never keyed our offense to MG and AC getting buckets at a 25+ point clip. When that has happened, we've gone 2-2.

Do we need others to pick up the scoring slack? Of course. But it's about efficiency. The problem with giving MG and AC more shots is that they aren't very efficient, even when they are open.

Your "analysis" and prescription is just trolling. You are saying Iowa can't win unless MG / AC transform into Steph Curry or Tyler Ulis. Because that can/t happen, you're just saying: Iowa can't win.

Go get bent.
You're an idiot. I'll give you that. You think getting 12/13 points per game out of 2 senior guards is asking them to be Curry?? That's about all I need to know about you.

Teams are leaving them open & they still won't take the shots. They're too hesitant, scared, & thinking too much.

How is that idiotic? You want MG + AC to score 25+ ppg combined and to do so on less than 20 shots combined. That's Steph Curry level efficiency for the MG + AC combo.

So, yes, it would be great if our two PGs were lights out shooters and finishers at the rim. But they aren't. So why are you still beating this dead horse?

No we don't. Did you just pull that number out of a hat?
The thought that Mike and Sapp need to pull the trigger on good shots is good, but to suggest that they need at least 25 points between them each game isn't going to happen regularly. I still like 25-30 points from Mike, Sapp and Woody as a general expectation. Add in at least 10-15 points from the bench, and we will usually be OK. The lack of bench production has been our biggest problem the past month, and defensive rebounding might be second. Free throw shooting has also been down, and not just for our guards.

So if they take 20 shots. Make 8 of them (40%). 3 of those are 3 pointers. And somehow manage 6 ft's between the 2 of them. And you would think that's Steph Curry efficiency??? I don't think that's asking too much of them or them taking too many shots for a couple reasons. 1) They are being left wide open 2) Nobody else is really scoring so taking away shots from others isn't a big deal right now.

Now if/when our guards start to score more & they defenses can't sag off of them then they can lower their combined shot totals again because other people should be back open again.

But for right now these 2 have to shoot/score more for this team to win.

I believe you are overstating your argument by insinuating that Gesell and Clemmons are constantly left "wide open". Occassionally, rarely -yes, but both players are being defended nearly every possession. When either player is left unguarded they should absolutely shoot the ball. I just don't see that happening frequently.

The real key (as others have mentioned) is bench scoring. Uhl, Baer, and Ellingson need to step up production IMO.

You're basically describing the MG / AC stat line from the Indiana game (MG 6-9 FG, 4-6 FTs, 1-1 3pt; AC 5-13 FG, 0-0 FT, 2-6 3pt = 29 points total).

We lost that game.
