I adore Megan and wish her the best but I'm not seeing this one. If she is competing mostly with talented males her chances of success are not good at all. What position could she play and excel? It may be fun, but this is going to be brutal for Megan. Am I missing something here?
I think you have to look at it from a different standpoint. For a lot of these guys and especially Megan this is all about exposure. We are not even 3 hours in announcing it and I'm getting messages from all sorts of media to talk to Megan about this and thats only good for her.
There are also sponsorship possibilities for her playing in this tournament if she were to get into the WNBA.
And thirdly why not? She's from Iowa and deserves an opportunity like this.

I love Megan, don't get me wrong. She is my favorite Women's basketball player ever and I want her to do well and I want her to have every opportunity. I love that there are sponsorship opportunities for her. I just don't see how she can compete.
I understand. I get where you are coming from there is just 0 downside to giving her this opportunity but immense opportunities by doing it and who knows she may not even get to Wichita. That is my hope. Hopefully she's busy doing something else.

Tiby? You guys will love Matt. He came highly recommended and a few guys on the team really wanted him so we reached out and he was all over it. He played at Urbandale HS. He wont be the last guy who played in HS in Iowa that left that will join us. In discussions with one for next year.

Let me address anyone that has this sentiment... If we were making a mockery of the situation or had no intentions of playing her then yes I would say publicity stunt.
My 1st conversation with her and the tournament were very specific that we were not going to turn this into a circus. This is about getting Megan the best exposure we could possibly give her. Just like we have with every other player we have. My sincere hope and I've told her this is that we never actually see her in Wichita. That means someone has picked her up. Not much would make me happier. So calling it a publicity stunt is not remotely accurate.
I agree. I guess as been stated publicity wise it’s great. From playing standpoint I just don’t see her getting much PT when it comes to it. Played HS ball with a guy who was on the guys team who scrimmaged Iowa women’s team from time to time. He was a post who probably avg 7-8 pts a game as a senior with no college offers and he said plenty if not most days he and men’s squad outplayed the women’s team. This shows the competitive imbalance between men and women especially since she’ll be facing college, guys playing overseas or former pro/college players not former Iowa HS b-ball players.
At 6'3" most other players that size in this tourney are guards which no way she can keep up with and she will get eaten alive by big men who have size and weight advantage on her as well as athleticism. Sorry to be a hater but this is the truth.

Add in the fact that she will be using a basketball a different size than the one she is used to, and this is just a complete debacle.
Megan "Eddie Gaedel" Gustafson is what her name should be in the program.
I like it. Let her give it a try. Maybe someday terms like mens or women's hoops will be obsolete.

An above average men’s YMCA team would mop the floor with the WNBA champs if they had a month to get ready and had a coach.
The speed of the women’s game compared to men is exponentially different.
This. Love Megan, but she has zero chance of being even marginally effective in this format. She is a 6'3" post player. Hell, even if she was 6'8" or taller, the difference in strength, mobility, athleticism, and skill of her male counterparts would overwhelm her.
Love Megan but agree she has zero chance of having any impact on making this basketball team better. It's all about PR for Megan which is fine I guess but it certainly is not about the basketball and this team's success.

I wouldn't read too much into it. They are helping get her name out there. If they really want to go with a tournament with her as one of the 8-9 players, it's a free country. It won't go well, but nothing wrong with what they've done so far.
So uh, is she going to be attempting to guard a 6'3 male point guard or a 6'10 male post player?
If there is one thing Megan lacked this year it was PR. Luckily for her this team and league are willing to help her out.

It is fun she is on the team, however getting to play is another story. Good high school male post players would swat her shots. She is going against grown men....who will swat her shots.
