Lots of things exist, doesn't mean it's a wide spread rampant issue. Of course there are racists assholes of all colors in this country. But the idea that some random racist is trying to board an elevator in a secured area for members of congress and doesn't know someone else trying to board the elevator wasn't supposed to get on because she's black seems really far fetched.
Half the country disagreed with you until 1865, then most of them spent the next century insisting that Jim Crow was necessary as well. And it's not like African Americans were treated well in northern states. All the northern cities needed to do to draw upon the supply of cheap labor was to be a little better than Jim Crow, which was a pretty low bar.

I'm not excusing slavery, it does need to be mentioned that there were black slave owners, and it was globally accepted for the time period, and pretty much all of human history prior to the existence of the United States. 200 years from now what's left of civilization will be appalled at what we accept today as standard practice.

The world has a racist past, the difference here is we've tried to address it and grow from it. Not always at the pace or level everyone would have liked, but we didn't pioneer slavery or racism, but we are pioneering the end of them.

Don't forget how the prison industrial complex disproportionally affects black and brown folks too - white people are just as likely (if not more) to use and sell drugs but are 13 to 14 times less likely to spend time in prison for said crimes. Racism very much exists today, it's just hidden from public view under the guise of justice. Slavery still exists today in this country, read the 13th amendment.
