Did Iowa recruit Hamiti who is at 165 for Wisconsin? If so we’re we (Iowa) close to landing him? He looks really impressive.

Gomez looks great at 149 for Wisky as well. Gonna give Sasso all he wants. ISU has to be regretting him leaving (cue Mitch😉).

He had us on the transfer interest list as well. We might be regretting too.

I don’t see that at all - looks like good technique/leverage - guy looks small for 65
Yeah I actually agree, I just stated it wrong. He is able to use tech/leverage to overpower these guys and I don’t see that happening with the top guys, Time will tell. This guy is dangerous for sure and most likely will have some big wins this season. Need to see more matches.

Noted!

ISU is a mess. Their best 165 transferred to Wartburg for better coaching.

Think about that.
Total mess. Only ranked 6th in the nation for dual teams. Train wreck in Ames.

Now on to Gomez, and Mitch knows this too, but Gomez couldn't get cleared to compete at ISU, or Iowa, or basically any team that has any integrity or concern for the kids health.

Thus it was a perfect fit for Bono.

Awesome kid who got some terrible advice and I pray for his long term health and we don't see a tragedy on the mat this year.

ISU @ 6th is more a testament to the lack of quality opponents in their dual schedule.

If I made the effort, I could likely find at least 5-6 teams ranked behind them that would beat ISU right now.

The Gophers, for one, and it pains me to say that.

Edit...ok, I looked...ASU, tOSU, Minny, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Missouri would all beat ISU in my opinion.

He pinned Hartman who got 6th last year and won 2 matches at NCAA's in 2019, and pinned Olejnik who was R16 last year.
I didn't say in the past, I meant this upcoming season. All credit to Hartman for being an AA, but he literally had the dream draw of all possible draws to take 6th. He beat 28th seed Rodrick Mosley of GW 8-6, 21st seed Peyton Hall 6-0 and won by Medical Forfeit over Mekhi Lewis to make the semis. He would then lose to Griffith, O'Toole and Smith. If he wins more than 2 matches at NCAA's this season I will eat my shorts!

One of Olejnik's wins was over the 33 seed and the other was over Braunagel, who was a walking zombie by that point. Braunagel had to wrestle back to take 9th at B1G's to even qualify.

Nitpicking aside, the point was we have yet to see how he does against Wick, O'Toole, Griffith, Kharchla, Marinelli, Wittlake, Valencia or Ramirez. Hell, even Berge, Amine or Wentzel would be a good gauge. Hamiti may very well prove to be that good, I am just leery to put him there when there are all these proven guys he has yet to wrestle...

During his high school career Hamiti wrestled for Joliet Catholic Academy. I first saw him at an early season tournament during his freshman year. Watched him win some early round bouts against average opponents, and assessed he was just an average high school freshman wrestler. True story, this kid looked like he should be in biology-chemistry class. Any place but a wrestling mat. Hamiti really had an unimposing appearance; a very slight body type, and scholarly glasses. Hamiti won that tournament against a series of quality opponents. Appearances can be deceptive.

Hamiti a three time state champion (Illinois) and could/should have been four time champion, but no state tournament his senior year (COVID). Hamiti is tough. He has competed during the off-season against quality opponents. His resume is valid.

It's true that Hamiti hasn't wrestled the toughest of schedules, but he's a true freshman and - regardless how he finishes this year i'm sure most any program would love to have him. he's bonused in 14 of 16 matches.

I had him as the #6 prospect coming out last year.

1Paddy Gallagher
2Alex Facundo
3Richie Figueroa
4Drake Ayala
5Shayne Van Ness
6Dean Hamiti
7Lenny Pinto
8Chance Lamer
9Alejandro Herrera
10Dean Peterson
11Carter Young
12Joel Vandervere
13Cael Valencia
14Alek Martin
15Victor Voinovich
16Wyatt Henson

He is legit, if he AA’s this year at 165 as a true freshman then look out. It will be fun to watch how he does through the grind of the Big’s and nationals. As of now those saying he will be trouble for the Bull could be jumping the gun a bit.
The good thing for us is the Bull is healthy, he also took an in season loss and was really really pissed off about it.

The kid seems pretty legit to me. Bonus in 14 of 16 is awful good for a true freshman. Tough weight class to make the podium, but sure looks like he's at least put his name in consideration to take one of those spots. Good for him.

This ^^ seems very reasonable...the only question now is who, and for how long, will argue with you anyway? :)

sure is a brutal weight to navigate this year. 2/5 he gets the bull so that'll tell us a lot.

Agree - he’s smashing guys but need to see some top 10 match ups

Fair enough, I guess we will see how Hartman or the rest of the guys that Hamiti has wrecked do at NCAA's this year... Nonetheless, pinning dudes that would win even a match at NCAA's as a true freshman is still pretty impressive.

And if we go transitive property, he pinned Cael Carlson who Marinelli beat 6-5...

I wasn't saying he hasn't looked beastly. I just like to temper things down when it is a new guy that hasn't hit a true top guy yet. He may very well be that good...

So far, his situation is a LOT like Sponseller from tOSU was. He was undefeated until B1G's, whipping people, but with no huge wins. He would go on to take 4th at B1G's as the 2 seed, losing to Morningstar in the semis and Vallimont to take 4th. At NCAA's he would win his first 2 matches before losing to Morningstar again and Sherfey in the R12.

He may very well outdo that, but Sponseller is a key reason why I temper expectations with first year starters!

it really doesn't matter. everyone can dance all around 'let's see him prove it'

(i myself have been guilty of this)

but the truth is, the kid is a killer and is gonna be a star for the next 4 years. it's only a question of 'to what degree'.
165 has been an absolute meatgrinder and this year is no different. I have no doubt the kid is really good, but this is one of the few weights where the quarterfinals has about a dozen guys that could all beat each other. I just think it is fair to want to see him wrestle a few of those guys before deciding on if he would actually be a favorite in that strong of a group or, like just about all of them, could finish 1st or R12...

Gonna be glorious after Nattys to see if that holds up.

I'll either be eating crow or an insufferable prick.
Lot of difference between a dual and tournament team is what I’m hanging my hat on when the time comes.

Or if they lose to Uni in the dual
