Hank Brown committed to Iowa

Only a "three star." Another complete failure from Ferentz and Co! Boooooooo hooooooo.
I assume this is sarcasm, but I have had enough 4-star QBs who commit to Iowa. None have panned out since Drew Tate.

Jake Christensen, Spencer Petras, and Cade McNamara were all awful at Iowa. I will take Ricky Stanzi and CJ Beathard any day of the week. Hopefully, Hank reminds of us of one of those two before his Iowa career is over.

Gimme a Nate Stanley, especially first two years of his term.

He does look like a solid RPO QB. Time will tell.

Thanks for posting this. He looks like every Iowa QB from the last decade here.

Dink & Dunk throws. Check
Locks on to one receiver. Check.
Late Throws. Check.
Short Throws. Check.
Footwork - Not great.

Sorry - except for a few nice long throws against a Lobos team that is not much to look at, I'm not super impressed here.
Hope I'm wrong.

I hope you’re right.

I think we’ll get another QB (we’re losing 3 scholarship QB’s; this guy makes it only 2 coming in). I would really like to see a guy come from the G5 ranks who’s had a lot of success - Kaidon Salter would be the jackpot, but there are others (Sluka from UNLV is another one of my favorites).
Honestly, I’m where you are. I’ve seen what those guys have done to the likes of Indiana, Vandy, and several others. But until Lester proves me wrong, I’m gonna lean on his expertise. I know the bar is low, but it’s all we got right now.

Good thing you know more than a former AA HS QB who was set to go and start for Spurrier’s Gators until he blew out his ACL. Then went on to throw for 10,000 yds in college. Then was a QB Coach, OC, and head coach. I mean, hell, you shouldn’t settle for whatever you’re doing now. You’ve obviously got an eye for QB talent.

He's not entirely wrong, however, he is only a redshirt freshman, and this is one game against a rather shitty defense. The kid does have nice touch on some of those deep balls, but watching this film doesn't exactly give you a ton of confidence. It will be up to Lester to develop this kid into what he could be.

I saw a lot of unnecessary throws that look like he he predetermined where he was going with it. I didn’t see any evidence that he’s a mobile qb either. Seems to occasionally drop to the 3/4 arm angle even on deep balls that cause it to hang in the air. He does look fairly accurate on short throws though.

Honestly, based on this film, I’m not sure he’s even an upgrade over Stratton.

I am not quite sure how to respond to all of the negativity. What if Lester sees a guy with good physical tools that he thinks he can make into a solid P4 quarterback?

After all, Stratton's stats at Colorado State were 4-17 (23.5%) for 78 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 picks. Under Lester, he completed 60% of his passes in 2024.

Also, if we want to compare Brown to Lainez, both saw action in the 4th quarter of bowl blowouts in the 2023 season. Lainez, as we know, showed good mobility rushing 6 times for 51 yards, and completed 2/7 passes for 4 yards. In contrast, Brown went 7/9 for 132 yards.

Our sample size for Brown, in terms of college games, is 1 full game, 1 full half, and parts of 2 4th quarters. Still fairly small. I don't think that we can draw definitive conclusions from it.

So in the spirit of How the hell should I know... Rank em

Brown
Sully Sr
Stratton
Sully Jr
Fitz

I be happy to be wrong but i got grief over not going gushing over Resar and Hogan’s film and Resar lasted a month before being moved to WR. I admittedly had at least hope for Lainez. I just don’t see anything about his tape that makes me excited.

I foresee some strip sacks… he really brings that ball back when he throws mid to deep routes. Throws a nice catchable ball tho… wish I could tell if he had good mobility but his Hs tape didn’t show a ton of it and hard to tell the level of competition.
Sully is still our best option right now IMP

…and the criticism is a bit much for a freshman QB with only a few college games experience under his belt. Way way too early to draw solid conclusions, I agree.

As others have stated, the decision was made by a qualified Offensive Coordinator. That alone is good reason to withhold judgment.

My source said the comparable is CJ Beathard. Sneaky fast, good athlete, good thrower, smart.
I saw that too.

He does have a bit of Pat Mahomes (leg whip) on plenty of throws. I know how some perceive that around here though lol.

I think B. Sullivan is the most likely to win the starting job, with Brown as the backup. But with Sullivan being as physical as he is in the run game, I expect Brown to get opportunities to play.

Is belichick going to hire Brian?
Bill has his own son's career to pump up, but I suppose he could throw another dog bone to Ferentz family. BF was in over his head at OC, but it was really papa that promoted him too fast and didn't get him educated/prepared

Anyway, this new QB should be better than Deacon or Petras or Labas or Lainez or Carson or any other QB BF/KF recruited over past 8 years.

I think Lester believes Fitz Jr. to be a legit addition who will earn a spot. So thats three......
That’s good and all, but it shouldn’t keep Lester from still trying to find a home run addition, which is all he should be shooting for now.

Should've gone after one of those MAC QB's like Indiana did with Rourke last year. That league sucks, but they produce QBs.

The forum wouldn't be much fun if everyone had the same ideas. It helps to have an open mind and respect the thoughts others!! LOL

A friend of mine is an Auburn grad and current high school football coach. He watches every Auburn game and said his first game he looked like Mahomes. The next two, he looked like a bad high school QB. Hopefully there is some upside there.

So many posters have become insufferable. This is what Nebraska probably went through on their board when 9-10 wins weren't enough. Take this post for example.

Welcome Hank. You will enjoy being a Hawkeye.
Not if he stinks it up.

What kind of a pissant takes on this preconceived attitude for a new member of the team? It's hard to imagine what these people are like in real life away from this board.
