Has a multi-year starter at QB really ever improved under the Captain?

unfortunately i'd have to agree. We have had a lot of fun ones to watch but they all seem kinda tainted as were there longer under his rule.

I do not feel like Tate did well his last year. He and Banks are my two favorite qbs in my life span. Both guys had some sort of crazy will about them.

Banks is the only one I remember who had a better senior year. But Kf only had 2 years to screw his head up versus 4/5. I think by the time Iowa QB's are seniors KF/coaches have completely turned them into robots and all natural instincts are gone. JR is an example of a QB who left the program and Michigan deprogrammed him and rebuilt him into a decent QB. KF is control freak and overall not too bright IMO.

The last few games Stanzi played at Iowa were some of his worst.

Statistically he was better on the year but when it came time to win he was not as effective, especially the last quarter of that season.
This is closer to the truth.

Statistically, Stanzi and Tate improved in some regards, but they also weren't making the plays they had the years prior to win some of the close games they were faced with.

Some of that however, could also be attributed to worse defensive play/linemen play, injuries (Tate), and a lack of good receiver options (particularly in Tate's case by his senior year...most of his targets were freshmen and sophomores with limited or no experience).

I'm hopeful that CJ can figure it out. I'm just glad he had time yesterday! I feel like the difference is last year he would have thrown into coverage and taken the chance whereas this year HE is way more conservative. The risks he took last year were why Iowa went 12-0.. I want that aggressive QB back...

CJ along with ALL the others besides Banks have been and were Ferentzed. CJ is barley a glimpse of what he was when he got his first action on the field. If you can't see it you need to make an appointment with your eye doctor.

T. Smith not drawing double coverage exposes the mediocrity of the rest of our receivers this year. We have ONE receiver who can run a route and has good hands. One. And he isn't all that dynamic.

The prevailing view on Stanzi is an incredible case of revisionist history. In 2009, our special teams and defense were key in our close wins:
  • UNI - our special teams blocks two field goal attempts in the last 10 seconds to seal a 17-16 win.
  • Penn State - Clayborn made an incredible punt block and return to give us the lead. Later, a Pat Angerer interception set up a short field for Adam Robinson.
  • Michigan - after our offense failed to get a single first down when we had the ball with 3 minutes left and a 2 point lead, Greenwood sealed the win with an interception.
  • Wisconsin - our defense gave up only 10 points and forced two turnovers in the 4th quarter
The only game that Stanzi closed out himself was the MSU game, and he was excellent on the last drive. With that said, he still only finished 11/27 on his passes, and our defense held MSU to 13 points.

If our defense and special teams plays like they did in 2009 during the 2010 season, we would not have lost to Wisconsin, Northwestern, or Minnesota.

Stanzi played much better in 2010 than he did in 2009, however we won/lost close games due to factors outside of Stanzi's control in both those seasons.

Let me summarize this for everybody. When Iowa has a great Defense they win. When they don't have a great Defense, they don't.

Agreed...Senior year Tate was injured, had bad defense and had to score a lot of points, and had bad receivers. He had grigsby bailing out to avoid getting hit in Minny game. OSU game, big play to Chandler ended in Chandler fumble. Tate was the one that got the blame, but rest of team was mediocre.

You need a good QB to win in college football, but even with a good QB that doesn't guarantee exceptional year. Give a team a great defense like Tate had in 2004 or Stanzi had in 2009 and a lot of mistakes by a QB get overlooked.

Beathard needs some help if this season is going to be good.

While that is somewhat true, Stanzi also played his part in some of those losses.

- Arizona was a buzzsaw game and every mistake seemed compounded for no good reason other than we were on the road way out west so "omg we might lose!", and the Hawks damn near pulled off the comeback anyway, if not for some blown coverage and terrible pass protection late. F*** that game.....

- Wisconsin, Stanzi and KOK not being on the same page late costing us a timeout and then him panicking and dumping a pass off to Robinson who never had a chance to get out of bounds as time expired. Also ate a sack by J.J. Watt on that same drive after rolling out of the pocket.

- Northwestern may have been more on the defense, but Stanzi had some real boneheaded plays that hurt as well. Missed a wide open receiver, opting to take a shot downfield into triple coverage. It got picked, yes.

- F*** Ohio State....................because f*** Ohio State. That's why.

- Just about everyone played bad or made mistakes against Minnesota. That was a worse loss than North Dakota State (because NDSU was a better team than that Minnesota squad.....................)
