.... in your life, than running into a crowded group of punt team guys surrounding the ball on your 10 yard line when the play is clearly over and throwing a block, hitting the ball with your foot....causing a turnover that giftwraps the opposing team a TD??

Not trying to pick on Beyer, but this is an example of how costly it can be to lose focus. EVERY play matters, and you HAVE to have your head in the game and not make mistakes that would be embarassing in pewee football.

That's a play that doesn't happen at the local high school and they only win 3 games a year. No way should it ever happen in Division 1 football.

I think the only mental mistake I've ever seen that was worse was in a pewee game, where a kid forced and recovered a fumble, but ran the wrong way with it.... the only reason he didn't cause his team a safety was because a kid on the opposing team tackled him just before he could reach his own endzone.

Boneheaded for sure.
Really a complete breakdown of situational awareness.
If you're on punt return it is absolutely imperative you know where the ball is to avoid exactly what happened. He shouldn't have been within 20 yards of it at that point.

1979 homecoming game for Burlington HS and the hounds are up by 1 with 8 seconds to play and it is 4th down at midfield. Coach tells the QB to run around and run out the clock. QB takes off running backwards and runs out the clock as he get to the end zone and gets tackled for a safety to lose the game. It made news all over the country.

Ya boneheaded for sure.

How come the play wasn't blown dead? Would the officials have let Wisky stare at the ball all night?

Thanks for the laugh!

Who are you trying to pick on then? Did somebody else make the boneheaded play? lol

You're a ****ing moron. How do you know nobody was yelling at him to stay away? Were you out there? The kid forgot rule #1 on punt return which is to know where the ****ing ball is.
He is blocking with his back to the ball. The kick returner has to yell out. I don`t know if anyone yelled out and neither do you, but I would assume that if they did he would have stayed away.

Nonsense. This wasn't a return situation anymore once the ball hit and started rolling. At that point he shouldn't have been blocking anyone period. He also should have been aware of the 10-20 yard radius of where the ball landed just from where he was pre snap. Much different if the return man was fielding it between the 20s.

As far as nobody else being around, there were 2 others nearby that had no business being around a slow rolling ball that was going to be deadened, so those 2 also could have and almost touched the bal.

It was bad football by the players, and by the coaches who are in charge of that, that those players are the dense. It is the reason the game was lost and ruined a great performance. Byers should never see the field ever again, that's how egregious it was. Anyone with that dumb of a football IQ shouldn't be playing Division 1 college sports. Harsh but true.

Being that no other Hawkeye was within 25 yards of the football, this was on Beyer, not the special teams as a whole.
And to make it sting even more, he looked like he was line dancing through there when his foot hit the ball. The slow mo replay made it even more humiliating.

that play was as boneheaded as it gets

you learn to get away from a ball like that in 7th grade for crying out loud

I mean I have seen this scenario a few times in my life. I have also seen guys celebrating a touchdown prematurely by dropping the ball prior to crossing the goal line.
I've seen a special teams player (a Tight End no less) go for and then jump away from an onside kick like he was afraid to touch it, and consequently it was easily recovered by the kicking team.......

I have NEVER understood how this can happen. You should be treating that ball like it’s nuclear waste. The worst is when the punt returner feels the need to stand adjacent to it.

I miss just putting Ed Hinkle back there to fair catch and get the drive started

All I know is this as close as I have ever heard the Captain to ripping a player outside of late hits and roughing plays or off the field issues. He called it "dumb" and referenced that all the other players heard the get away except Beyer clearly insinuating his head wasn't in the game. KF usually uses the "he was playing hard trying to make a play" excuses to take the heat off a player but not here. KF knows this was a monster game on so many levels and without that and even with everything else that we are complaining about we almost surely win. Had all the MO and also just gave them a TD in close low scoring game.
