Hawkeyes complete 2020 schedule by adding UNI

A home game
A should be easy win towards Bowl eligibility.

You may not like it, but don't say it does nothing.
It does absolutely NOTHING. If we lose, we end up on Sportcenter ... If we win ... so what and we gain nothing by beating a 1-AA team ... Let's just send them a check for $800,000 and call it a day ...

again, seemingly easy win towards bowl eligibility. Which is important for a host of reasons.

You don't like it, we get it. But to say nothing gain shows a lack of understand of college athletics.

I understand college athletics pretty well ... I was a sports reporter for 10 years ... so I've dabbled in covering college athletics ... this game does nothing for Iowa except give UNI a big fat check ... and it gives Iowa a big black eye if it loses.

Wow, must be nice to only play michigan, ohio state, penn state 50% of the time.

Looking at 2010-2019 schedules;
- Played Ohio State (3), Michigan (6), Penn State (6) times.
- Played all 3 in same year once in 2010.
- Didn't play any 2014-2015.

All time
- Ohio State leads 46-14; OSU won last 4 back to 2005
- Michigan leads 41-15-4; Iowa won last 2 back to 2013
- Penn State leads 15-12; PSU won last 4 back to 2010
Iowa has won 5 out of the last 6 vs Michigan and KF is 8-6 vs PEDO U,

So bowl eligibility does nothing? No extra practices, no increased interest, no increased enrollment, no increased donations, no benefits on the recruiting trail.

Home game revenues, which you obviously know far outpace the cost of paying that $800,000, does nothing.

Oh yeah you know it well. The game means does nothing, you totally nailed it.

I must say it was pretty cool seeing ISU beat Oklahoma for the one and only time in my life time! Pretty big smack talk from a fan of a team that historically wins 3 games a year and gets beat by UNI on a regular basis.

Hold on there Tex LOL! I think your stats are a little off but I get where you are coming from.

I was merely pointing out the obvious and to be fair, Iowa is 1-4 against OK and Texas all-time. And I seem to recall NDSU beating Iowa, and UNI giving Iowa a run for their money several times recently.

Hats off to Iowa or Iowa State whenever they beat one of the perennially top 2-3 programs in their conference!

I'm not talking about bowl eligibility ... I'm talking about playing a team that's not named UNI and one that has a name that doesn't include "Iowa" in it. Should we play Drake, too? Wait, how about Grand View?

Freakin stupid to have a Big Ten Game and then have a non conference game. Freakin stupid to put UNI on the schedule anytime Freakin stupid to put Iowa State on the schedule. Yeah I know it's out of our hands on that one..

Let's just admit it our non conference schedule is a farce... eventually people will wise up and say enough is enough I'm not dropping hundreds of dollars to watch boring football ...

Normally, I'd be screaming about UNI again, however, in this case, I think it can be justified based on the following:
1) we will most likely be breaking in a rookie QB
2) ISU is getting better and may be at their best personnel wise in years
3) Iowa has back to back road games at PSU and OSU with a inexperienced QB

Now, obviously, most solid D-1 programs are not still filling out their 2020 schedules and that's an entire different discussion. Most are in to 2024 right now. Our athletic department should try to get out of ISU every year and try to get some decent home and homes vs. other P5 teams. But, UNI represents a great pay day for Iowa as UNI can bus in (no flights) and should not present a major issue for Iowa.

Which stat would be off, Tex?

The UNI game ostensibly gives Iowa a relatively healthy win before a huge schedule that includes trips to Minnesota, OSU, PSU (back to back), and Purdue, while also hosting MSU, NW, Nebraska and Wisconsin.

Iowa still schedules tougher than most P5 schools.

Hate to break it to you, but even if Iowa replaced UNI with another P5 team (say Oregon State) in 2020, if Iowa loses once it's not making the playoffs. There are certain teams in each league that can make the playoff with 1 loss and others who need to run the table to get in. Iowa is one of the teams that has to run the table to get in.

Nope. They can lose once, particularly if that loss is to Ohio State or Penn State or really any Big 10 team. If Iowa only has one loss and gets to the CCG and wins, they will be in the playoff.

Iowa is without a doubt the worst at non-conference scheduling in the B1G, and I really don't think it's close, at least among teams that are supposed to be perennial competitors. Barta must have actually gone to the conference office and asked for special permission to schedule UNI. Unreal. We are about 5-6 years past the time we needed to drop (or at least limit) the Iowa St series and hire an A.D. with cajones.

This! I think many fans agree...not interested in this game. Schedule a home and home with SOMEONE! ANYONE! Colorado... Kansas St would be fun. Missouri, Syracuse, Louisville... Somehow Purdue was able to schedule Louisville, but Iowa can't? Give me a break. I'm fine with one "warm up" game, but then let's get going.

Wisconsin played #84 Utah State, #109 Florida Atlantic, and #110 BYU in the non-conf.

B1G allows FCS games, no special permission was necessary.

Massey has ISU #38.

PATHETIC. Why not more teams like a Wyoming? This just reeks of stupidity. What the hell is wrong with our admin?

I'd rather do a home & away with Iowa State in every season instead of playing UNI. Playing the Cyclones twice in the same year makes more sense than playing the Panthers once.

Heck, why not play UNI at the UNIDome instead of inflicting Hawkeye fans with such a sorry Kinnick opponent. We could take the gate and UNI could have the concessions.
Tickets would have to be $320

Again, I ask.......................

Who the f***'s idea was it to make this schedule?

Fire this person from working, permanently.

B1G office creates conference schedules, Iowa has nothing to do with it other than give their non con game dates.

I'd like to see Iowa schedule better in the non con but it won't happen with ISU on the schedule.

I love how the Hawks end up on the road or at home against WI/NEB/NW. How was that determined? Luck of the draw? Makes every other year very difficult regardless of crossover games.

Then fire the Big Ten office and everyone inside........

Gary Barta is garbage and these OOC schedules reflect that. Iowa gets none of my money until he's kicking rocks.

There should be no FCS teams on the schedule anymore. Period.
I thought that practice had ended?

As much as the NCAA is incompetent, this is such an easy fix: FCS wins do not count toward bowl eligibility. Done!

Wisconsin's non-conference schedule was particularly soft this year, but don't even begin to compare Iowa's and Wisconsin's non-conference schedules over the next 10-12 years. Opposite ends of the spectrum.

Wisconsin future schedules:
http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa/big-ten/wisconsin-badgers.php

About the only remarkable thing is their 2020/2021 ND series while also having a Syracuse HaH the same years. The other years, their schedules are no better than Iowa. At least Iowa has a P5 every single year, Wisky has none for 2017, 2018, 2019. USF as their big game in 2019.

Just because they get one good win doesn't mean they are that good. They're only 3-2 and BTW the polls usually have knee jerk reactions to BIG upsets. It's what they do

The Massey rankings are a compilation of over a hundred computer rankings, it is not a poll. Computer rankings do not have knee jerk reactions. They do reward team's for beating a top ten team on the road.

I would love to see Iowa vs West Virginia or UCLA or Kentucky on primetime tv, not Iowa vs Northen Iowa at 11:00 on ESPN News :(
