The results of the 4 team playoff makes me wonder why we even have it. I like the old BCS formula better: Two top teams and a bunch of good bowl. IMO the BCS always picked the best 2 teams to playoff virtually every time. IMO the BCS formula worked every time except for possibly 2003 when USC was left out and OK was included in the BCSCG. This was due to an quirk in the SOS in the computers. Despite the huge loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 CG. OK finished 1st by such a large margin over USC in the computer polls who finished first in the human polls. LSU finished a close 2nd to USC in the human polls and fairly close second to OK in the computer polls. This was the reason the committee adjusted the formula for SOS in subsequent years.
Picking the 3rd and 4th team was always a very difficult job as the BCS committee pointed out many times. Some how to me it seems that the devastating losses suffered in the playoffs this year and last year is not good for football in such a ballyhooed event. The results of the games were certainly beats down on the season for both OK and MSU who had great seasons in their own conferences and had to leave a bad taste for the season.
It seems to me ESPN finally got what it wanted Alll the Big Bowls marginalized except those in the BCS profit center..
