WHY do we have our post player, (Rebraca in this case) hedge on the screen all the way out by the three point line? We haven't had a post since Woody who could do that AND get back in the paint to guard his man, yet we still do this and continue to give up fricken layups to the guy standing unguarded under the basket.

Hedging makes sense when executed properly. It’s the guys off the ball that aren’t rotating properly.
When Connor is engaged, he can be very good defensively. Tonight he is lazy so far.

Having the player guarding the ball go over the top of the screen and the defendender of the screen playing NBA-style drop coverage would probably work better. Hedging is essentialy double teaming the ball. Just play drop coverage as the post player. Over the top so they don't bang 3's on the ball handler.

Don't quote me but I've heard that hedging makes sense when executed properly. It’s the guys off the ball that aren’t rotating properly.

Iowa going 2-18 from 3 is what doesn't make sense.
Without question. Thats why this team will probably go no where again in the NCAA tourney, unless they can get the NCAA to let them play all their games at carver, We simply can't shoot the ball on the road worth a damn, and when we don't shoot well from three we have little chance against anyone with a pulse.

Which is kind of the issue, since we rarely ever rotate properly. :(

And we help and double on defense a lot when we do not need to as our defender is not yet beat yet

"and when we don't shoot well from three we have little chance against anyone with a pulse."

sign of the times...when you think about it, pretty much goes for the vast majority of teams i would surmise...

Many schools of thought on handling ball screens. To me, this is the weakest area of our defense. We've gotten killed on it for years. And teams like NW who are great at PNR exploit the crap out of us.

If you go over the screen and chase on the hip with the screen defender sagging to take away the drive, you give up an uncontested jumper. See Duke crushing Wisconsin in the title game a few years ago exposing this coverage and getting tons of open mid-range jumpers.

Go under and give up a 3.

A weak hedge is what we trypically do. It ain't working.

A hard hedge/trap gets the ball out of the player's hands early and farther away from the basket, allowing help defenders to do their jobs.

I used to get upset at Garza for getting eaten alive, but the more I watch, I realize we just don't coach the entire philosophy well, including defensive rotations.

I heard that somewhere before but can’t quite remember where.
