Heller shaking up rotation for MSU series

Banks Field held a little over 5,000 fans not sure how much space they have to expand. its been 14 years since I have been around Banks Field
Banks Field holds 3000, it has never held anything close to 5000. There is a plan to renovate the stadium, it will be much like the Kernals ball park in CR.

Google is your friend.

BTN+ announcers (Iowa's team of John Leo and John Evans) said last inning that Brecht was sitting at 97-99 with the fastball. Hitting his spots far better than any of his last 3 outings. Triple digits make for great headlines but good control and hitting spots makes a great pitcher. As of right now, Brecht's outing is rivaling his great outing against Nebraska. (Knock on wood, fingers crossed)

Lots of early B1G action:

IU thumping Purdue (again): Indiana 10 Purdue 2 B7
Maryland and Minnesota in a slugfest: Maryland 9 Minnesota 7 B6
Rutgers up late on Illinois: Rutgers 2 Illinois 0 B7
Nebraska on verge of sweeping PSU: Nebraska 6 PSU 5 B8

IU beat Purdue.
Rutgers beat Illinois.
Maryland has a comfortable late lead against Minnesota.
Nebraska sweeps PSU.

From a B1G standings perspective, Iowa really needs to win today's game to stay ahead of Rutgers, Nebraska and (likely) Michigan.

John Leo with a cringe-worthy statement at end of T5. "Brecht is dealing like he's a blackjack dealer at Riverside Casino."

I know that there was no ill intent; none in the least but . . . oooof . . . probably not the best choice under the circumstances.

Michigan State is desperate for a win today. As you can see below, they are battling Purdue for the last B1G Tournament bid.

Iowa remains 1.5 games out of first; they are also only 1/2 game ahead of 3 teams.

From @Alum-Ni 's thread, in case you missed it:

Yesterday's Results:
Maryland 14, Minnesota 5
Indiana 15, Purdue 3
Iowa 8, Michigan State 6
Illinois 9, Rutgers 7
Michigan 5, Northwestern 2
Nebraska 5, Penn State 2
Ohio State 6, North Carolina-Greensboro 1
Ohio State 5, North Carolina-Greensboro 1

CURRENT STANDINGS....Games Back
1. Indiana (37-14, 14-6).................--
1. Maryland (34-18, 14-6)............--
3. Iowa (36-12, 12-7).....................1.5
4. Michigan (25-22, 12-8)..............2
4. Nebraska (28-20-1, 12-8).........2
4. Rutgers (31-19, 12-8).................2
7. Illinois (23-23, 12-11)..................3.5
8. Michigan St (29-18, 10-10)......4
8. Purdue (23-26, 10-10)..............4

.....................................................

10. Minnesota (15-32, 8-12)
11. Penn State (24-21, 6-13)
12. Ohio State (27-25, 6-15)
13. Northwestern (8-37, 3-16)

Games for today:
Michigan State at Iowa
Purdue at Indiana
Northwestern at Michigan
Illinois at Rutgers
North Carolina-Greensboro at Ohio State
Minnesota at Maryland
Penn State at Nebraska

I mentioned earlier today that Iowa is ahead of Michigan, Neb and Rutgers by just a half game.

We didn't get a lot of help today.

Results so far:
Indiana beat Purdue
Maryland beat Minnesota
Rutgers beat Illinois
Nebraska beat Penn State

To keep hold of 3rd place, Iowa obviously needs to win today's game to stay ahead of Rutgers, Nebraska and Michigan.

1 hit 4 innings less than 60 pitches switched before the inning switched. 5th inning 63 pitches 0 runs and 1 hit Brecht still in control of his pitches..

Iowa making it easy for the MSU pitcher.
Dorighi 3 pitches and he is out
Peterson 3 pitches and he's out both entered the game hitting over .350 on the year only threw12 pitches in the bottum of the 5th to 1-2-3.

trouble in the 6th 1st 2 batters on 2nd and via the walk and a wild pitch. time for a relief pitcher unless does it again leaves him in till he drowns.

Brody walks 4 batters in the 6th. He walks in a run. He had 3 strike outs as well. He ends the inning with a K.

He's likely done with 93 pitches.

Iowa now leads 3-1.

After 5 1/2 innings, Brody's line:

6 innings pitched
24 batters faced
93 pitches (54 strikes, 39 balls)

8 strike outs
5 walks
1 Wild pitch
0 Hit batters

1 Hit
1 Run

Brody is done indeed. Nice Job today.

Whitlock comes in for the 7th inning.

A couple of calls in B8 make it appear that the umps are looking to get this game over. Particularly the call at second base on the attempted steal. SMH.

Break out the brooms. Huge series sweep. Pretty sure that clinches a spot in the B1G tournament . . . bring on the Wildcats.

Big Sparty, Gopher and Nittany Lion fans this upcoming Thurs-Saturday.

EDIT: And, at this particular moment in time, Iowa sneaks ahead of . . . wait for it . . . #30 RPI Indiana and checks in at #29.

3 great starts by our starters. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Iowa was 22-3 at home.

Now lets go kick cellar dweller Northwestern's ass.

Who/where the Top 4 B1G teams play next week (starting Thursday):

Indiana at Michigan State
Maryland at Penn State
Iowa at Northwestern
Rutgers at Minnesota

Morgan on Friday.
Langenberg on Saturday.
Brecht on Sunday.

I presume that Heller's thinking is not only to see if it wakes up Brecht but that getting longer outings out of the starters on Friday and Saturday will create less stress on the bullpen.

6 innings from Morgan. 0 runs allowed.
5 innings from Langenberg (likely a 6th if not for rain delay) 2 runs allowed.
6 innings from Brecht. 1 run allowed.

Simpson follows Morgan with 3 nice innings.
Savary, Christopherson and Llewellyn workmanlike efforts after Langenberg.
Whitlock follows Brecht with 3 nice innings.

I'm not sure that Heller and McGrath could have drawn it up much better.

Short of winning the B1G tournament, neither Nebraska nor MSU will be a Regional team but . . . both of those teams are solid weekend performers. Going 6-0 against those teams is nothing to sneeze at.

Helluva weekend too considering missing Anthony and all the other distractions, etc.
Heller and staff have these kids focused and really looking forward to BTT in Omaha and a regional. Up to #29 RPI!

Lots of distractions this weekend:

* Mothers Day
* Senior Day
* Graduation
* Losing 4 players to the gambling investigation

The team definitely circled the wagons. Iowa is 5-1 since the gambling story broke.

I said it above already, but the starting pitching was simply outstanding this weekend and hopefully it is a sign to come.

The hitting has also been very timely. All you have to do is look at yesterday's game as an example (the game was tied at 5 in the bottom of the 8th with 2 OUTS; the Hawks then scored 3).

no change on the pitcher bases loaded another walk in the 6th and the score is 3-1 . inning is done with bases loaded rough inning had to be a big deal for both Heller and Brecht.

the timing of this has to help the team going into the BTT and the NCAAT for a shot at the WSCBB.

looking at this weekends starting Pitchers they will all be back this spring. bring back the entire starting pitchers bode well for next season.
looking for the new recruits to see who plays where. and info on the incoming pitchers.

Brody had a squeezed strike zone today.

It’s was one of the colder games and the temperature didn’t reflect just how cold it was.

Cooler temperatures made junk pitches even junkier.

Jack got burnt on one inside pitch late, and got away with one hung pitch. But Jack threw some really good pitches today.

Iowa did well against LHB, which isn’t always the case.

MSU stud lefty hitter was rendered ineffectual all weekend. I’d need to look back, but MSU as a team didn’t hit .200 against the Hawks.

Much better plate discipline early on, except Raider, and Raider has one speed. That one speed worked out well today.

Hawks playing really good baseball right now.

It was cold.

Yes it does. Next weekend at the BTT (according to you), we'll see a mishmash of Heller ball. Good thing they are all back. Please do your incoming recruits thread and **** this good thread all up.

We generally don’t have this kind of crap in baseball threads. Not calling anyone out, let’s just keep it that way.
