[What Would Jesus Do?]

Most people used to view Nixon as the worst president of all time. Or at least since the Civil War. For some, he was dislodged from that dark honor by Carter, or Reagan, or most often W. But still among the worst.

And yet most people also acknowledge that he was clever and had an excellent grasp of foreign affairs and knew how to play the political game.

So I saw this facebook meme. I'm inclined to agree with it. But doesn't it apply equally well to Hillary?

He lost the Vietnam War.

A lot of people would say he was a bad president just for that. Personally, I indict him for extending that criminal war for many more years as well as committing war crimes in a couple other nations.

He covered up crimes that undermined our democracy. Sure, nobody believes in democracy any more, and most of what we saw as crimes then is legal now, but still....

He made the appeal to racism the cornerstone of the GOP for the next 45 years (and counting).

He made a home in the GOP for the Religious Right.

And that's just off the top of my head.

A disappointment who at least stuck to his principles most of the time.

You can say he wasn't competent - although plenty will argue that he handled the problems of his term about as well as other presidents would have. Who knows for sure? But his aims were decent. They were values like human rights and social justice. Aims that we used to believe in.

Reagan enabled a sea change in values in America that has caused us serious problems ever since - from economics to foreign policy. He wasn't incompetent. And he certainly didn't disappoint the Kochs and Scaifes and Olins and Adelsons and others who have been working to re-engineer America to make it easier to loot. But because he was successful in putting the agenda of the oligarchs ahead of the people, he was MUCH worse than Carter.
