What exactly happens in that place, it seems like they get on a roll and shots start falling. It also helps that the refs seem to get taken over by it and start calling fouls in ISU's favor, at least from what I've seen

They think they're going to win, the opponent thinks they're going to lose.

I think that's most of it. How many Iowa fans *honestly* thought we were going to win that game at any point? I know I didn't.

Ive never understood it. I don't get how there can be magic in basketball? Its kind of a stupid thing to brag about.

Iowa fans weren't running around the field saying "Kinnick Magic" after Koehn kicked the 57yd field goal this year.

I personally think it makes them look dumb, but that's just me. I know they don't care what I think, but I would be embarrassed to say, "Carver Magic" after every win.

Yeah it would be embarrassing to say that when Iowa isn't that great at home. ISU is like 57-3 in their last 60 games at Hilton.

Great you guys can win 57 games at home congrats. So should UNI start calling it the "Magic Dome" then because they seem to win a lot there in football?

Probably should call Cameron Indoor stadium , "Magic Cameron Indoor Stadium" now. Sounds catchy.

Maybe Iowa could call it "Carver Magic" for wrestling couldn't they?

it just makes you sound stupid, sorry. I laugh every time I hear it.

Lol plenty of other places have there own version of "Hilton Magic". Sorry Iowa doesn't have anything like that

Sorry but I don't want "magic" associated with my program.

I would just like to win and that's it. No magic or extras needed. Just win. Sorry but it sounds stupid and fans adding to it makes it worse. So apparently they are saying that they need "magic" to win? Boy isn't that a kill shot to your players?

It's a much overused term. It was applicable during Johnny Orr's time, but not again until Fred returned, and even now I'm not sure it's appropriate. The reason it was "magic" in Orr's time was that ISU couldn't beat anybody anywhere else. We'd go down to Lawrence and lose by 40, then beat Kansas in Hilton. That kind of thing happened over and over again. It isn't that way now.

Having said that, Prohm made a comment after the game that was pretty perceptive. It was his first exposure to the Hilton atmosphere in a big game. He remarked that the crowd roared approval when ISU cut the lead from 18 to 16. In other words, the crowd really was never "out" of the game. That's unusual, if not unique.

I know that place can get electric and loud. I have been in there when it gets loud and its pretty cool to see. I just hate the term. I remember hearing it all the time when Orr was there. I realize during the "dark days" it went away and now its back again. I just personally find it strange that it can come and go? Its just odd to me.

I kind of wish Iowa would renovate carver and make it more like Hilton (adding a bar/lounge area). Iowa's set is nice for a concerts and what not, but its not good for a basketball arena. I would like to see something different.

Reporters, and some fans, have greatly overused the term. They did the same with "the mayor." As a former journalist, though, I know not to expect anything better from that crowd

I'll bet Randy Peterson was wishing there was a magician in the house last night...

Who cares what it's called. "Hilton Magic" is fun for the fans. The bottom line is Hilton is a great home court advantage because of the raucous environment when the team is doing well. There wasn't a lot of "Hilton Magic" when Morgan and Mac were there. It's all about the product on the court and right now Iowa State has a good product and the fans have responded in kind.

When the Iowa basketball team is doing well and Carver is packed, Iowa has a significant home court advantage as well. Carver can get really loud and intimidating. To me the difference is the quality of team being put out there. And unfortunately, Iowa does not have the same raucous environment it had when Tom Davis was there. I think in time McCaffery will bring it back.

They have not one, but two 20+ point comeback wins in their last handful of home games.

I would call that pretty magical.

the Iowa women are playing at Hilton tonight. The game is tied at 57 with 4 minutes left in the game which is on the Cyclone TV channel on Mediacom. both teams are rebuilding this year.

"Hilton Magic", the power of the Coliseum faithful to produce unexpected victories, was first recognized by Des Moines Register sportswriter Buck Turnbull. On a Feb. 14, 1989, showdown with No. 3 Missouri, the Cyclones conjured up the spirit of the Hilton crowd to produce a stunning 82-75 victory. The following day’s headline read “Hilton Magic Spells ‘Upset’ One More Time.”

It may sound "stupid" to you, but the national media loves it. Iowa State has some of the best fans around and is what makes Hilton one of the best home courts in all of basketball. If Carver wasnt such a morge, maybe they would get some big time exposure too.

Pretty sure its just the midwest media who uses it. No outside of the state knows about it, unless the ESPN announcers bring it up. Fran Frascilla is the biggest ISU homer and he always brings it up when he is announcing games. No one else knows about it.

Carver is an outdated venue and needs to be updated. I don't disagree with you there, its outdated and needs a renovation. I am sure it is next in line, now that the multimillion dollar football facilities are finalized. Hopefully

I haven't been to Carver for a number of years. What's the problem with it? The only criticisms I ever had of it were regarding design choices, not condition. Of course, I confess that I still think of Hilton as being fairly new.

A lot of it has to do with having a top ten team. Fans anywhere tend to get behind that and be loud. I was there for a couple McDermott and Morgan era games. There was no magic because the team wasn't good. Hilton is a great venue but when the team sucks, it's no different than Carver when the Hawks suck.

True enough, but there also was no magic when Floyd and Eustachy were there.

Depends on how you define "magic". To me, the magic is just having a really good team that the fans get behind and make it a tough place to play which is what Hilton is now and has been when ISU is good. What stats do you have to prove it wasn't "magic" under Floyd and Larry? Let's compare home records.

I'm not disagreeing on Hilton being a great place, I am just saying we need to define what the "magic" is in a quantifiable sense if we want to say the "magic" only happens at certain times.

Personally I think the thing that would worry me most is the dependency of a program on fan energy to pull games out. ISU is much better on the road than they used to be but we saw what happened last year on a neutral court against UAB when they played in a dead environment. They were a 1000x better than UAB but when they were used to getting that energy boost it was not there. Maybe they do not hit a situation like that this year?

If Carver could muster half of the energy that is created by the fans in Hilton maybe Iowa could count on a little home magic. Instead, watching games @ Carver is like visiting the county morgue. The fans at Kinnick are as rabid as the Hilton crowd so Iowa fans are capable of the craziness.

I have been in carver when it's been pretty raucous and crazy. The fan base tends to sit back and enjoy the action when it's a run-of-the-mill team vs going all crazy. I've never understood the desire to go crazy when it's the Coppin States, Maryland Eastern Shores of the world. When there are big games and especially conference games, the fans come in much greater numbers and make a lot more noise. There's not a bad seat in the house with no decks and no blocked views. There's often less ability to sway officiating in the B1G especially when coaches like Izzo, Bo Ryan, etc. come to town. You can make all the noise you want but Iowa is not getting the call most nights. In fact those teams will often get the needed whistle. You have to flat out beat the upper echelon teams all on our own.

The advantage Hilton has is it is a concrete box. There's nothing overly special that the fans do. Cheering in unison based on the concrete structure and low roof prevents sound from escaping amplifying it. That same crowd in a more open stadium would be less noticeable. It's great for sound but not an outstanding venue otherwise. It's not bad but nothing spectacular either.

If you do a quick google search of "Hilton Magic", ESPN, Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports, and SB Nation all have articles of Thursdays game with "Hilton Magic" in the title.
