I have never coached football, so educate me, please- why do the Hawkeyes not use misdirection? why don't we try to defeat an aggressive defense by moving the pocket right or left? what has happened to use of our tight-ends? does our coaching staff notice that teams are loading the box so as to overwhelm our offensive line? Whatever happened to Kirk 2.0? And, the most obvious question of all, just exactly how many plays do we have in our offensive play book? (I am a serious Iowa fan, so I am not attempting to troll anything... just trying to address my frustrations!) Go Hawks!!!!

I can't answer all your questions, but when our stud RB runs for over 150 yds it's difficult not to try and get him the ball as much as possible. But I agree, misdirection, move the pocket, tight ends... need to mix it up more. We seem to have some talent in WR's this year, but can't scheme to get them open?

Cade is inaccurate throwing the ball on the run. He is not very mobile so that is why they don’t move the pocket. If (and that’s a big if) they play Sullivan they could and should move the pocket. As mentioned, when you have a 1000 yd rusher after seven games keep feeding him the ball but use play action passes to keep defenses honest.

As long as Cade is playing QB, teams are going to stack their defenses to stop the run. I am trying to figure out how he ever started for Michigan. His arm is weak, he has very little mobility, and he has no pocket presence. He isn't the only problem.

Granted I only watched the first half and turned it when I saw Cade trot back out after halftime, but it seemed like the offense went all 2022 with it's pre-snap motion or lack there of. The Washington game looked like a green bay/san fran gameplan with plenty of misdirection. MSU was "line up and beat them" nonsense. In my unqualified opinion.

Cade was never a great QB. Harbaugh basically said that when Cade committed to Iowa. But Cade was healthy at Michigan, so his limited skills, combined with the kind of talent Michigan had, led to a BIG title. Cade was a minor element in that success, which is why he was beat out the next season by a kid named JJ McCarthy. That NEVER would have happened at Iowa. The starting QB from a championship team gets beat out by a rookie? LOL, right, KF?

And now the mediocre skills Cade once had have been compromised by multiple serious injuries. The young man deserves a lot of credit for the rehabbing. Unless you've done it, you can't appreciate what a hell that is. But effort isn't enough. Heart isn't enough. To win today, you need a healthy, talented QB who can both run and pass. Wait a minute . . . Iowa has one! KF just won't let him play. Doesn't even consider it, he says. So there you have it. Sullivan, an experienced BIG QB, is exactly what Iowa needs, so KF keeps him nailed to the bench.

Hardly any TE bootleg action it seems which is our signature play. No one expects Cade to roll out so they never have to account for it and can throw another 199-250 lbs at tackling #2.

If only we had someone who could stand under center, receive the ball with his hands, and run faster than my 7 year old.

Absolutely not. Zero chance of that ever happening. Patrick Mahomes would have absolutely no chance of seeing the field today, and anybody who believes otherwise hasn't been paying attention.

The biggest reason is that KF doesn't believe we can develop good players if we're trying to "trick" the opposing defense.

We have to run what we run no matter what because that is the only way you can create a good football player (in his mind).

Then, if we actually have success even in the face of the defense knowing what we're going to do, we have cleaned things up and know that we're doing things the "right way."

It's the only way to give less gifted players a chance at the NFL. They have to realize they have shortcomings and figure out a way to overcome them.

Edit: Also we can only take what the defense gives us rather than dictating to the defense and making them adjust to us.

Switching subjects. Why is the depth at corner so bad? Seems like with have just 1 good corner, 1 ok corner, and after that, yipes!

Like most non bluebloods, Iowa has always struggled with depth, particularly at positions like QB, WR, and CB. They don't have 4 and 5 star backups waiting in the wings like the OSU's of the world so there is often a very significant drop off when someone gets injured.

The middle of the field was ignored for a long time with BF, and now it seems the slants Lester has dialed up are constistently missed by Cade.

Yep - WRs are open all the time - but Cade either doesn't see them, waits too long, has slow progression, cant run to extend plays consistently enough, or can't get the ball there. It's really that simple

As an OC it would drive me nuts, but I guess they dig their own grave by continuing to trot him out there

Play action and moving the pocket would do wonders for this offense and would have beat MSU.

But Captain idiot doesn't think we need a QB that can move.... Or pass for that matter.

Soooo many missed throws AND immobile, is just a spectacular combo.

KF is an idiot when it comes to the QB position and the offense in general.

Can't convince you but Iowa will more than likely be favored or toss up in all remaining games. They just need to play better than they did Saturday night.
