Do referees not call facemask penalties anymore? These had the potential to change the outcome of the game. I don't want to hear anything from nebby fans about calls from last night.

One of the worst missed facemask calls I've seen in a while:

They actually called PI on Iowa on this one:

And iirc Wetjen got facemasked on a punt return at about the Iowa 45 which would have put Iowa at the Nebby 40, that is already in FG territory.

DRew Stevens had about 7-10 extra yards on his game winning 53 yarder last night.

If he has a breeze I would try him from 65 or so on a last second kick.

There was a graphic last evening that Nebby used 6/7 different field goal kickers this season.
That's almost unbelievable!

Lil Matty isn't quite ready for big boy football.

Drew himself said he was kicking it 64 during warmups going that direction and told coach so--how bout KF giving them the ball and the wind to start the 3rd so we had it in the 4th huge play and it almost backfired when they came out and went doen the field--
I would have liked ti see us try the 67 yd one at UCLA righ tbefore half instead of the hail mary---drew has an nfl leg for sure......

I also thought on one big neb play the play clock had run out>

2 different receivers grabbing the dbs face mask to pull him out of the play. They are coached that way. Rhule is a pos.

Yeah, normally you dont want to give a team the ball and the wind to start any half of the game, it bit Kirk about 6 -8 years ago against Purdue

You are correct. That was an egregious facemask penalty that is impossible to miss. And then they call Iowa for PI?! And a similar thing happened again with the Nebraska D-back grabbing an Iowa receiver's facemask with NO PENALTY. I don't understand why KF wasn't out there throwing his notepad at those incompetent goofs. I mean not making those calls is totally ridiculous. It was like that bowl game against Florida many years ago . . .

That's exactly what I told my wife. I said they have to be coached to do that for it to happen again and again. Just like most/all teams teach O-linemen to hold on every play.

The subjectivity in PI now is crazy. They often allow all kinds of holding and hand fighting and, apparently facemasking, with nothing called. And then somebody brushes somebody and there's a flag. It's as out of hand as the thug play in college b-ball.

I think the officials made a concerted effort to minimize penalties to not extend the game...because of the extreme cold.

Both teams were affected equally.
Sure. Everything is the same. Good is bad and bad is good. It's easy to say the earth is flat and "both teams were affected equally," but I wouldn't mind seeing some evidence. I'm old-fashioned that way.

Yet, you read the Husker forum and they think they got hosed.

B1G officials just hate Nebby.
I’ve actually heard their fans say the punt fumble was a bad call, the LJ td had a push in the back and raiola fell on the ball when he fumbled.
They are clueless.

They consistently struggled with spotting the ball as well.
There was the ‘magic punt’ where the Nebraska staffer caught the shanked punt on the exact yard line it went out of bounds.

No he didn't. Maybe 5 but that was close to the post.

It happened right in front of me and the ball went out of bounds around the 36 or 37 yard line....NEVER seen such a poor spot....
I was in the top of the North Endzone and could tell it was missed by a minimum of 10 yards. Not sure I’ve ever seen a punt spot missed that badly before.

KJ ran for 11 yards on the next play. Definitely cost Iowa 3 points.

There is nothing more unscientific than spotting a punt that goes out of bounds in the air. It's an educated guess at best.

People get worried abount measurements, but that only happens about once every other year or so. Punts out of bounds could benefit from some technological help.

Hawks won with an embarrassing 5 1st downs vs a team that gave up 60 pts to Indiana and 500 yds to USC.
Anytime this untalented team wins a game be happy because next year you may be complaining about the officiating vs Albany. Looking at 2-10 right in the face!

Agreed, I will say that it is very rare for a punt to be caught well(as much as you can at Iowa) out of bounds on the 50 and then to determine that it went out at the exact same yard line. There is some physics or something that says it may be impossible.

The mechanic makes it really difficult for the officials.

The referee has to watch the punter for roughing, and then when he figures out it was out of bounds in flight, go stand where he punted it from, look in the general direction of the punt and raise his arm. The deep sidline official goes well beyond where the punt went out and slowly walks back along the sidlines, and the referee chops his arm down when the sideline official reaches where he thinks the trajectory took the ball.

Sometimes it would probably be better to just let the sideline official guess, but that's not the proceedure.

He was in their ass several times Friday. Way more then you usually see him. It does no good though..

You are of course, correct.

However, we do not need science to know that a ball that lands 6 yards out of bounds at the 50, probably didn’t cross OOB at the 50.

Agreed, but the referee really doesn't know where it went out... He has to be watching the punter for roughing, and the sideline officials all have responsibilities to watch on the field as well. Despite having eight officials, nobody is really watching exactly where the ball goes.

It's a process that hasn't changed in 50 years and is probably ripe for some improvement.

ya Ok ... explain this to us LMAO
Nebraska frequently lined up with the slot receiver and the wide out standing at the line of scrimmage. Only the man furthest out is an eligible receiver, which means the slot guy is ineligible. If that guy ran downfield, as soon as Dimestore Mahomes threw the ball, it became a penalty, regardless of who he was throwing to.
