Horrible use of timeouts by your coaches

it seemed pretty obvious msu was going to score when they got to the 3 yard line. Let them score and keep two timeouts in ur pocket. You will have the ball with about 1.40 and two timeouts. You go down and at worse make a fg to send game to OT.

Wrong. We weren't moving the ball against that D. Our OTs were getting completely owned by their DEs. We had like 250yds total all night, and 85 were on one play. Taking the TOs and giving our tired D some rest was 100% the right call. No way our coaches take the heat for this loss. They needed a 4th down conversion and five 3rd down conversions to win this one. Coaches played this 100% right.

I usually am always unhappy with Ferentz clock management and use of TO's (although he's done an excellent job this year), but he did nothing wrong with his use of TO's in this game. He used them when any good coach would have. This game was not lost because of coaching, and the players just got worn down by MSU's O line. You have to give Sparty credit, they made big plays at the end of the game.

It was a very awkward and difficult situation for Kirk with how the timeplayed out:

1st and 10 at Iowa 13 with 2:15 left, gain of 3. Iowa called timeout.
2nd and 7 at Iowa 10 with 2:09 left, gain of 5, Iowa called timeout.
3rd and 2 at Iowa 5 with 2:04 left, no gain, Iowa called timeout.
4th and 2 at Iowa 5 with 1:59 left, gain of 2 (1st down).
From then on Iowa had no timeouts and had almost no control over the clock.

So the problem is, if Kirk didn't call the first timeout, MSU would have been able to take the clock down to at least 1:35 and it would have been 2nd and 7 from the 10. Assuming they didn't score or get a first down on the next play, MSU would have been able to take the clock down to 50 seconds before running another play. At that point, 3 timeouts do you less good because there is SO LITTLE time left.

It was a lose/lose situation, either burn all your time outs forcing them to get a 1st down, or save all you timeout and let them leave Iowa with no time on the clock.

Kirk's timeouts forced a 4th and 2, and we were SO CLOSE to stopping them. Shit happens.

What this guy says.

And a textbook personal foul chop block on Fisher. Would have set up 4th and 15.

And a hold on the TD by #75 on #43 Jewell. MSU would have had two shots from the 11 had a flag been thrown.

Watched it again and the chop block was right at the point of attack and the ref was looking right at it. Should've been called. Just how it goes for us.

He had 3rd option

Let them score once they converted on 4th down

The defense played a great game, I just don't see how you tell them to let the opponent to score and look them in the eye afterwards if it doesn't work out, I think the odds are ;better to stop MSU than to try and go 60yd in a 1min drill type situation. I have no issue with what we did, we came up a couple inches short, I can live with that outcome because the team left it all out on the field. If we had let them score and we failed to move the ball to score ourselves in a 1min(its not like we moved the ball in the 2nd half with exception to the 85yrd td pass), nearly everyone would be questioning why we didn't just leave it up to our defense who had played a hell of a game. I just don't know how the coaches would have been able to look the team in the eyes afterwards if they had conceded a TD and we ended up losing. Hawks came up just short last night, no shame in the effort or outcome, it took a drive for the ages to beat us last night, hopefully they can flush this loss away after a couple days, rest up for a bit, regroup and get ready for a big bowl game.

Ironically him using the timeouts could have burned us. If we get the stop on fourth and 2, we have the ball on our 5 with 2 minutes left and MSU still had 3 timeouts left so quire likely they would have gotten the ball back. As others mentioned it was a lose/ lose situation. Just hoping the defense would stop them was the best option imo and we were SO close to doing that. SO close. Ugh.

I disagree that MSU was the "better" team. Both teams are evenly matched and played one helluva game. This is the kinda game that coulda gone either way. Unfortunately, MSU made the plays when they had to. We could play this team ten times and wouldn't be surprised if we had a 5 wins and 5 losses. Lot of credit to MSU. I've been pointing to next year as our year all season long. This was a surprising year for us. With what we have coming back, we will definitely be back! Go Hawks!

Teams that make plays when they have to are the better teams for that very reason.

Old Kirk would have ended the game with 2 timeouts left, so I consider last night enormous progress.

Give it up. You're an idiot.

Coaches did it right and we just got beaten by a better team.
My only disagreement would be with the last sentence. MSU is EXCELLENT and deserve credit for a gutty win, but I wouldn't concede that they're simply a better team. These two teams are very evenly matched, IMO. If they played 10, I suspect they'd split them.

And MSU had three timeouts, so they could use them whenever they needed them.

One of my favorite posts ever. Great game. Nothing coaches could've done at the end

I agree that they're very close. Iowa would probably win 3 out of 10 or more depending on turnovers and so forth.

The difference is that MSUs O-line was stronger than or d-line. In the second half, they wore us out and pounded the ball up the middle.

Check the rushing stats between the teams, that was the difference.

No shame in losing to MSU. They quite possibly could be the best team in the nation.

I would have let them score since MSU rammed down our throats the whole drive. I also would castrate whoever thought going for a blocked punt was a good idea after holding them to start the 2nd half. That was the game changer that cost us.

I agree. Flipped fields. Gave them three points.
