So recently purchased a house and my buddies say we need to have a housewarming party. I am single mid 20's male and just wanted to know HROT thoughts on this. I know you guys will never lead me wrong. All pretty avid hawkeye fans so will avoid hawked home game. Has decent size yard isn't a huge house but have 50 inch screen in there (I know I'm a poor).
Was thinking of having it weekend of Northwestern game. So people can watch games if wanted to and it still will be warm enough to do things outside and drink. So ideas don't know if others have done this or just tell said friends to get bent. Have heard of stock the bar parties but seems those were more for weddings etc. Also didn't want to come across as a poor. So lets hear it HROT.

can you put a tv in your garage and have bags in the backyard? buy a couple of mini-kegs of craft beer, and some food for the guests.

grill brats and burgers, have guests bring side dish... or get party platters from jimmy johns, etc.

I wouldn't ask my guests to bring me anything for my house, seems selfish.

That was my thoughts on the stock the bar thing but what I read bout it is they bring their favorite mixer and whatever they don't drink just stays to "stock the bar".

If it were me, I'd do a Sunday brunch starting late, around 11:00 over by 2:00. Really just a lunch with breakfast food and booze but it sounds classy.

The people invited to this thing are not "classy". This is small town iowa not like in the city. Binge drinking would be encouraged and if Iowa beats northwestern we would all probably just get smashed at the house. So I think grilling and games n TV might be the best bet. Any good drinking games besides bags outside?

Bags, play cards, croquet or badminton or something. Don't have your guests bring food to a housewarming party (or don't call it a housewarming party if you want them to bring food), but a 'stock the bar' kind of theme would be okay.

Beersbee (sometimes called Polish horseshoes).

I'd just provide meat and liquor and ask guests to bring their own beer and mixers. If someone provided those items in addition to the Iowa game I wouldn't hesitate to attend.

I thought housewarming parties where something women did and the men that are married to them or dating them tolerated.

Never heard of a single guy having a housewarming party before.

I agree but I'm in my 40s and have most all of what I need for my home. Wasn't the idea behind housewarming parties for people to bring things a young, new home owner, would need? Not saying OP should ask for gifts, just thought that was the idea behind a "housewarming" party.
Anyway, agree on the grill and have people bring sides as this sounds much more like a "let's break in your new house and get knee walking drunk" than a housewarming party. Treat it like a BBQ provide the meat, buns, and first keg. Have others bring the rest.

I think you answered your own question here-bring a bunch of people over for a game watch for NW. Provide some beer and meat to grill, maybe some chips or sides. Tell your white trash buddies to bring busch lights and ice or a bottle of booze to share. Set a TV up outside or in the garage to keep the inside from getting too wrecked if possible.

And if you can afford your own house, it's pretty low class to have "stock the bar" party.

When me and the mrs bought our first house we did a stock the bar party. Actually all of our friends have done this. its kind of tradition in our town, if you move, you have a stock the bar party.

It was awesome and actually kind of got out of control. Everyone brought their favorite bottle and we were mixing shots. I had two coolers full of (bud light, coors light, wine coolers, and etc.) Also had all the mixes for them. Then everyone could choose to drink what they brought or drink out of the coolers. We ended up with almost 20 bottles of booze (lots of vodka and whiskey).

For food I just grilled up brats, hot dogs, and burgers. The wife bought some salads from sams and that was it for food. We had it on the night of the Iowa vs Syracuse game. It was perfect the temperature was warm and everyone got hammered. We played flippy cup outside in the backyard during halftime.

Thinking about this, makes me want to have another party like that.

Yeah I guess I should of stated it would be like a break in party type deal. Just didn't know of another way to call it besides housewarming. Didn't know if males my age did this hence the question as well. Think will provide meat and some beer and tell them to bring alcohol if they want but there will be some provided. Atleast SP gave a decent post and nothing bout how great Seattle is this time of year or whatever he does. Just messing SP.

^^^^ So maybe a stock the bar party might be in order. Hopefully Iowa can beat Northwestern so no one will remember it the next day.

buy handles of cheap wine or liquor, and pass it around whenever iowa scores.
buy a football to throw around.
loud music to piss off your neighbors.

I should clarify, our close friends bought the good stuff booze wise, but we did end up with a lot of Hawkeye and low end vodka. I really couldn't care, booze is booze to me. Whatever doesn't take good, mix it in a bloody mary or orange juice and it tastes great!

Also make sure you have enough pillows and places for people to crash. Had a buddy get an OWI the night of our party. We tried taking his keys away, but he said he could drive. We tried everything to get him to stay, but he wanted to go home. We called a cab and he wouldn't take it. When I found out the next day I was pissed off.

Now when he comes over my wife takes his keys away from him and he has to stay. Costed him almost 5500$ for that mistake. Not good

I advise against the stock the bar party. It's basically saying you want to freeload off your friends and that you're cheap. Be a man and buy your own booze that you want and like.

Just have a damn party they way you and your friends do it and have fun. Worry about party protocol when your wife tells you to.

This. Just have a party (one of many) at your new house. Don't gay-it-up as a housewarming party.
