How bad is it in the Transfer Portal Potty? April 10 update: 1,372 players have entered

I agree it is a s*** show and only going to continue to deteriorate if not reined in somehow very soon IMO.

It is fairly obvious players are being recruited from other teams (such as the Creighton point guard) and/or a big cash grab in a lot of instances. I have heard the portal number is now 1300+ players. I think it is great for players stuck behind a better player, a coach leaving, want tougher competition, or not a good program fit. But the majority are probably for the first two reasons.

IMO very sad situation for collegiate sports all around!

I know that football guys were approached last year, Caleb Johnson among them. He seemed pretty offended by it and came out on social media about being a hawkeye. I'm not surprised it's happening in basketball as well. Plenty of scumbag coaches and programs out there.

Actually I think it has evened things up a bit. You used to have only a few schools that were doing it below board and paying off the ncaa investigator. now that it is above board schools can do it without the fear of getting caught

I know I could probably go out and find this info, but is there a limit of total NIL money a specific team can offer 1 player? and/or total as a team?

What’s borderline stupid is the big shots who made this decision. It only took most of us one minute to know it was gonna be a shit show. Shame on them!!!

The big shots sat on their hands, did nothing, made the Supreme Court weigh in, and now we're in this mess. The NCAA had the opportunity many, many times to create something fair and equitable. Instead they did nothing and now it's the wild west.

Players were suing for the right to make money off their name/image and I guess the Big shots you refer to are the Supreme court? It was a 9-0 decision by the supreme court to allow NIL and at that point NCAA hands were tied. It needs legislative intervention to put into place limits on NIL. Blame the supreme court, but both parties since it was 9-0 decision.

Fran playing 4D chess.

Can’t lose big time players to the portal if you don’t have anyone that other teams want.

My guess is Iowa Swarm came up with some money to keep Perkins and Bowen. I would agree that most of the Iowa squad is not high dollar NIL talent. Kris Murray of course has high NIL value but also has NBA value.

Might as well embrace it. Sometimes you bite the portal and sometimes the portal bites you. Just the way it is nowadays.
Solid point.

Once the dust settles on this years moves Iowa fans will be happier than fans of most other schools.

Transfer Portal + NIL is making HS recruiting nearly pointless for those who don't have the highest tiered NIL collectives to work with.

Kids are getting recruited away, or just plain choosing to transfer, during their freshman seasons. So no reason for anyone, especially non-blue bloods, to celebrate "landing a 'big catch'" in HS recruiting because the likelihood of keeping said recruit around is iffy at best.

I don't like the 'no rules, ala the Wild West' that is the TP, at all, but until its fixed - which is just laughable because it won't be, not really - "it is what it is".

The Scotus ruling said NIL is ok but not schools dealing directly on helping set up NIL as the student has to do that with outside agencies.

And the first thing they need to stop is paying high school kids big NIL money only if they go to a certain school, that is pay for play, the NCAA admits it is and it is against the rules, but they do not want to enforce it and get sued again.

How can high school kids logically be making NIL money, that Scotus said was OK for college kids to make, when high school kids havent played in college. Not logical

Alston does not prevent conditioning the schollie on leasing/assigning the player's NIL to the school offering the schollie, it just requires adequate consideration. The decision, like the few 9-0 decisions you see on non regulatory matters, is extremely narrow. The NCAA can fix the NIL problem, it just won't.

Except coaches can't reach out until you're actually in the portal or it's tampering. That seems to be much, much worse.

I am genuinely curious what that remedy would be?
Please explain
Thanks.

Not sure if you're just attempting to be edgy-smarm with that comment, but have you noticed all the threads on portal players that are currently visiting Iowa and strongly considering committing?
And getting a commitment on Monday? Further proof that Fran does not embrace the portal or see it as a way to improve the team!!! The glass half empty and leaking crowd will need to start another narrative of negativity now.

Call me when the big time recruits sign on with the Hawks.
And Fran asks a very pertinent question. What happens to all these kids that overvalue their worth and don't find willing takers?

I'd have much rather have snagged Minor or Mack from the portal ...but let's be honest with ourselves, we haven't been able to attract that level of transfer since Reggie Evans.

If we do somehow get someone like those two to commit, I'll be just as ecstatic you and everyone else.

However, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if we're now done with targeting the front court (Brauns, Krikke) and Fran will now concentrate on snagging a legit scoring threat from the wing/guard positions out of the portal.
