Portal Closes in Just 10 Days: Coaching Malpractice Not to Bring QBs & WRs for Visits?

Thank you - about time someone applied logic on this topic.
Thank you for the information. Iowaslaw obviously doesn't know that. Plus the qb's we had visit shows iowaslaw has no clue. His predictions last year were so terrible I'd love to play poker with him but wouldn't want to take his government check.

Not to mention...even if the guy wasn't so injury prone (a fact that cannot be overestimated given that they have all been noncontact injuries where he was running 2 mph and simply hurt himself), he wasn't all that great at Iowa BEFORE the torn ACL.

Against weak non-conference competition (i.e. Western Michigan, Utah State), he had just a 51% completion percentage with 4 tds, 3 interceptions, and a whopping 5.6 yards per completion. He played against one opponent with a pulse, Penn State, and went 5 of 14 for 42 yards...again BEFORE his acl injury. Why is it magically assumed that he will be much better following a serious knee injury?

If it weren't for Deacon Hill setting the bar historically low, Cade's #s are some of the worst we've ever seen at Iowa.

You know, it takes years of bad takes to generate the amount rebuttal that the OP is receiving. When viewing events through that lens, OP's body of work is impressive.

Iowaslaw will just move on to the next topic and spew more nonsense.
🤣🤣🤣. Huge recruiting win to go out and land the backup quarterback from a 1-11 team (0-4 when he started). On3 has this kid ranked the 1,318 best player in the transfer portal...behind the QBs from Campbell, Temple, Albany, etc. Signing a warm body is not considered a recruiting win under any rubric.

I bet ol Iowalaw is eating crow right now for daring to point out that each of the portal's top 40 quarterbacks already committed long ago during the two portal windows. Kirk and crew outsmarted the rest of college football by sitting on their hands until May, then stealing mighty Northwestern's backup. Well played!

Sheesh, Iowalaw also mentioned the major problem with failing to bring in any WRs, Iowa's biggest need on an offense that desperately needs playmakers, immediately after the bowl game 5 months ago. He's sure going to be embarrassed when Kirk goes out and lands a walk-on from Iowa Western in June. Smart like a Fox ol Ferentz is. The rest of the Big Ten are suckers for signing their skill possession two deeps before spring practice when the top transfers were available.

I bet ol Iowalaw is eating crow right now for logically pointing out that all 40 of the top 40 quarterbacks in the portal already committed long ago during the two portal windows. The top transfers weren't available before Spring practice...because the Transfer Portal was not yet open.

Law -

Iowa's roster and coaching situation was unique to its B1G brethren. They have the 4th most wins in the B1G over the span of the last 10 years, so I think they have a better handle on things than you are giving them credit for.

It's far easier to criticize than it is to truly analyze situations.

I don't think there are many if any posters on this board that didn't grow frustrated while waiting for moves to be made with the OC, WR coach and Portal additions - and there was plenty of venting (historical levels at times).

I'll give you credit in that you throw your thoughts and opinions out there for consumption, albeit in a sky-is-falling presentation.

You're a contrarian, so continue to be that. Others are seeing the positives in what is happening with this team and within the program, and they should continue their own line of thinking.

Nobody expects you to change. Keep stirring the pot, but also keep expecting your audience to send back overcooked, undercooked and just plain awful meals...which I think you do expect and revel in because your personality is that of a manipulator and gas lighter.

If ol Iowalaw thought that Iowa was going to get high quality receivers and quarterbacks from the portal after the production of our offense the past few years, ol 2D has oceanfront property in Des Moines to sell him.

Sullivan and gill from NW will not overwhelm anyone but I trust Lester knows offensive skill players and would not commit to guys who cannot contribute.

Because each and every time you see a post about a player entering the portal Iowa is NEVER on the list of schools that have contacted. The staff is asleep
LSU head coach has stated the best players in the portal are in it for the money. All about the highest bidder.

How often are you gonna keep embarrassing yourself like this?

Does @hawkeyebob62 even watch football? The transfer wasn't open before spring practice so Kirk and crew didn't botch anything? haha! In this day and age, that might be the dumbest comment I've seen on this board.

Perhaps you recall a guy named Joe Labas. He was Iowa's backup QB all year, entered the transfer portal in December after the Big 10 championship game, transferred to Central Michigan in January, competed in spring practice in April, and won the starting QB job. That's how it works.

Don't remember Labas? How about Spencer Petras? Remember him? He too was a Hawkeye all season last year, yet somehow magically was able to transfer to Utah State before spring practice, compete for their starting job, and won it.

Roster management isn't complicated. Any coach worth their salt (not hawkeyebob) goes all in on the portal immediately after the season ends to fill holes on the roster That's why the portal opens in December. Those well managed teams bring in transfers to compete during spring practice to find out how things shake out. They do not wait until summer to find the key pieces to their struggling offense, like starting QBs or WRs.

Perhaps Kirk's failure to address obvious needs before spring is why the OP chose the title to this thread the way he did? Makes sense to me.

When did the season end? Hint, not December. You can sign a player at any point. The portal window is for entries. But I wouldn't expect you to understand that. Also for the millionth god damn time, the portal is not a menu. There has to be mutual interest.

Dumbass. The portal has open periods. Those QBs that might have entered it in December/January already knew where they were going. It wasn't Iowa.

As you obviously don't understand the Transfer Portal, it's no shock you don't remember that, for the first portal period, Iowa had no OC. And hiring an OC might be difficult if prospective OCs were to have no input or say on any roster moves on that side of the ball.

The coaching staff knows what Iowa has in the QB & WR rooms this year. It's no secret. While most agree Iowa had no excuse not to land a QB out of the portal immediately following Deacon Hill's record breaking season...Kirk appeared distracted "focusing on bowl prep" and ensuring his son was comfortable in his $4,000,000 home.

There's a new staff is in place on the offensive side of the ball. No more excuses. The transfer portal is wide open and there are hundreds of talented skill position players available. It's safe to say every QB in the portal is better than Hill and the vast majority of the WRs would instantly be in Iowa's two deeps.

The clock is ticking. The transfer portal has been open for a week and it closes for good on April 30th. To fail to bring in a single QBs and WR prospect from the portal to watch the spring game shows one of three things:

1. The staff is perfectly ok with Deacon Hill starting games at Iowa this year and is fine with another year like last year.
2. The staff still lacks foresight by putting all of their eggs in the gimpy Cade McNamara basket.
3. Kirk, along with the new OC and newly promoted WR coach simply cannot recruit.

How hard would it be to get a MAC qb on campus this spring to compete for a starting spot on a Top 25 football team with ZERO talent at QB? I believe 3 of the 4 WRs in Iowa's two deeps have less than 5 catches in their entire career...wouldn't that be a great reason for a portal WR to give Iowa a look?

Boy oh boy, the Hawks new OC and recently promoted WR coach are really showing their recruiting chops. It's no wonder this team is such an offensive juggernaut.

After badly missing in the portal (not bringing in a single kid during bowl prep or spring prep) they were forced to settle for the backup QB on Northwester's 1-11 team. That kind of stings for a perennial top 25 program to struggle so hard.

But that's not the end of it. Realizing that the Northwestern cast off isn't capable of winning many games if Cade inevitably gets hurt again, the hot shot staff sifted through the scraps left in the portal and found another huge potential contributor to compete at QB. HUGE win landing the 4th string qb from 4-7 Colorado State... who committed to Iowa after sitting in the portal for 6 months without a single talker (not even at the DII level).

Career stats for this recruiting win... 4 of 17 (23% completion rate) for 78 yds and 2 interceptions.

Quarterback whisperer / gift from God Bud made landing the guy a top priority like he did Utah Tech's Deacon Hill.

This is quite a track record with qb recruiting.

My guess is quarterback whisperer Bud made landing the guy a top priority like when he managed to lure Deacon Hill to Iowa last year.

OP is a emotional and not rational...
1. Doesn't know portal process or how it works.. yet, posts believing they are an expert..
2. A decent QB does not want to transfer in to be a back up (behind CadeMc) and hope the starter gets injured so they get their chance. I'll be the next Kurt Warner or Tom Brady...
2a. As mentioned, there is not much talent in the portal anyway, and if there was, they have to be willing to come to Iowa despite the reputation of the offense.
2b. Additional QBs, still take a scholarship, NIL money etc.
3. Iowa'sLaw, if you are so disgusted and miserable, leave... find another team, jump on the bandwagon of another school.

Yeah, and we keep beating your clones !

Yeah, and we keep beating your clones !
Hmmm...how would you define "keep beating your clones" in a thread about WR recruiting?

Do you mean wins and losses? Because just a year and a half ago lowly Iowa State beat Iowa when the Hawks & their juggernaut offense scored just 7 points.

Do you mean in WR recruiting? ISU, which currently has 3 WRs playing in the NFL, landed a 1,000 yard receiver who averaged 19 yards per catch last year. They also signed a 6'4, 200 lb WR from the portal as well.

The Hawks, on the other hand, who need a WR exponentially more than ISU and can offer instant playing time and more NIL money, managed to land Northwestern's 7th string WR...who totaled 11 yards receiving all year last year as a junior.

But other than the facts, you are absolutely correct.

Pretty sure he meant wins and losses. Pretty sure he means NFL draft pics as well. He may also mean the number of 10 win seasons. Furthermore, he might mean bowl appearances, bowl wins, number of seasons ranked, all-americans, etc, etc.

Which I get but hoping Iowa can find that balance if NIL offer this PLUS Iowa culture/coaches. Get people who appreciate what Iowa offers and not just who has the most money.
