How big of a project IS Josh O?

Was this the plan? Some PT when he is a junior and a contributor as a senior?
Besides being a big guy who played basketball, was this a shot in the dark schollie offer?

Sometimes there are swings and misses. Not saying this is the case with Josh, but at this point I would settle for a single.

this IOWA teams loses games by getting abused on the boards.
last night Penn States big Harrah, set career highs for points and rebounds.

Harrah was the player that over achieved most, and is a direct result of Frans stubborn commitment to playing small ball.

much like Kris Murray last year, Ogundele won’t get a chance until certain favored player combinations graduate

The more he spectates from the bench, the bigger the project he becomes. What was it last night? 15 offensive rebounds by Penn St.?

Looks like a walk on that was given a shot because of size but has little athletic ability. If he isn't in shape now it is unlikely he will be in the future.

He is a 340+lb project at this point. Unless the Hawks are playing Purdue, he's not getting any minutes. At least w/ Sandfort, there seems to be somewhat of a plan/effort to get him minutes every game. Not sure that can be said for Josh....he's a big body inside and pulls some boards when he does get time - which is more production than a lot of our guys give......Not arguing for more PT, but it's not like he's a huge drop off from some guys who are getting 20-30 minutes.....

I know this is kind of creepy and I wouldn't think that Fran would do this just to get a player to look at his program, but would Iowa and Fran have had a shot of sighing Dasonta Bowen if Josh Ogundele had not be given a scholarship to Iowa? Think about that for a minute before you criticize me.
I have no inside knowledge and I'm sure that Josh is respectable and all, but he is not of Big Ten material. He's got size, he runs the floor exceptionally well, but other then that there's work to be done and so little time to accomplish it at this level.
Riley Mulvey at the tender age of 18 on the other hand is a much more skill big man and it's not even close. Debate all you want but the proof is in the eye test. Riley jumps better, rebounds better, runs the floor just as well and evidently is more skilled shooting the basketball but Fran is pigeon holing him like he did with Kris, Ahron, and Tony last year. Just a thought, looking at all the angles...

Watched Josh warming up at MN. Didn't hit many shots and walked in the layup line instead of jogging like everyone else.

I don’t know anything about the kid’s character but is it hard to glean that he may not be putting the work in? He looks gassed after just a few minutes on the floor. He has to want to be in condition and out the work in. I’m not sure if he does. He seems like a good teammate, kind of a goofball on the sidelines, so maybe that’s just who he is.

Ogundele was a recruiting mistake

He gasses quick and as others have stated kind of just walks around during warmups. Not looking good right now. Maybe he will transfer out.

I'm not ready to give up on big O but it seems that if Fran isn't shitting the bed in guard recruiting he's shitting the bed in big man recruiting. With all the free publicity Luka gave us over the prior 2 seasons the fact Fran struck out like that this off season is very troubling

It’s the current scholarship players that get minutes that are getting abused, last night by Harrah,
isn’t it their play that is the issue?
Yes, along with players w scholarships for some reason that don’t play. Ash, Josh, etc.

Someone that follows recruiting more will have to correct me. I thought Josh was a fall back last minute offer. Which means Fran missed and had to find someone of size.
Probably crossed his fingers when offering.

Josh O is in WORSE shape now than he was at the beginning of the season. I would say most of it is on him.
You can lead the horse to the river but you can't make him drink the water....

They can't force the guy to get in shape. There is only so much they can do... Damn. Imagine the guy 20lbs lighter with 10% less body fat. He'd be a beast! And a lot quicker.

The problem isn't the players who play the problem is usually the inevitable result of trying to compromise the irreconcilable.

F Mac is obviously very into this "positionless" basketball. Size isn't a major issue because they just run wide open basketball. On the court, however, he won't commit to that style because we do not trap and press sufficiently to make that work and we don't have anyone with any real size that can pull the big boys out of the lane. So, F Mac hedges the instinct to run and take quick shots with running some offense, playing a more passive defense, etc...

F Mac doesn't want to play a traditional ball-although that's been the six best seasons for him. That's why our "big man" is 6'9" and not really all that big. Hell, P Mac is the tallest starter, although he's really skinny. That is compounded by the lack of the big guys that are ready to play. Of course, nothing gets a guy ready to play like playing so I share your thoughts that Josh and Riley should get some minutes when Iowa plays these teams with big strong centers. Filip is not a thick young man and he looks like Charles Atlas next to Patrick, Keegan and Kris.

They need to pick a style and perfect that. The team is not sufficiently talented to do what F Mac wants to do.

Since we aren't going to run a jack rabbit game, which I would much prefer, then play the other big kids, or at least Josh if Riley can save the RS. It's going to be a lot harder to bounce them out of the way.

I think a good portion of our roster is filled with MAC-type level talent … Factor in a coach who can’t close out games and has questionable lineups … and well… you have Iowa basketball.
Most of their recruiting profiles would disagree.

In all this Keegan NBA talk, etc ... people have forgotten how this team is almost all sophomores. Keegan & Kris are functionally RS sophs. P Mac is a red shirt soph. Josh, Ahron & Tony are sophs. Peyton and Riley freshmen.

Only Keegan and PMac regularly played last year, as reserves.

Joe is the only junior with P5 experience. Given the extent of Jordan's regression our two weakest regular players are the only seniors. Depending on the NBA situation, which I do not foresee for Kris, it seems quite possible that this entire team returns, less its two weakest links.

If I had Josh's size and ability, and the opportunity to play at the P5 level, I would be one in shape MoFo. Apparently he just does not have the desire... That is unfortunate
How,can you tell about his desire from that seat he occupies on the bench?

As young as this team is, as you have pointed out, with the right coaching their record could have been so much better. Playing Mulvey in the middle at least subbing in for Rebraca would have made a huge difference in my opinion, playing Tony or Payton more minutes at the shooting guard instead of JBO is another change in the rotation I would've made. Rotating Joe T and Ahron at the point guard and then starting Kris Murray at the other forward slot making Patrick one of the first off the bench is another no brainer. JBO playing spot minutes against certain teams or late in games needing a lock down free throw shooter. That's my rotations and I believe 10 players with 9 of those getting most of the minutes. That leave Connor, Ogundele, and Ash getting mop up minutes or none at all. That would have been a better team and whether more games would have be won, it's only speculation.
And I'm going to add this additional caveat, why Fran is trying to mimic Tom Davis's hockey line changes is madding. It's another reason that has cost Iowa wins and I would only sub 1 or 2 players at a time keeping at least 3 starters in at all times. Rant over...

The story linked at the end of this post is from October 20, 2021, over 3 months ago.

In this story:

* Josh admitted that he let himself go leading up to the 2020-2021 season and he had to lose 50 plus pounds as a result.

* Fran said Josh was sustaining effort more (so that was a positive sign) and that he was down in weight but he had be get even better in that area and Josh knew it.

It's disappointing that the conditioning and weight issues persist.

That story from October:

Josh appears to have hit that Kyle Meyer or Pat Ingram territory where we can see what Fran was hoping to happen, but it isn't going to happen here. If he ever wants to play, he needs to move on.

Also, let's not forget that Fran essentially booted Cougill for not losing weight (although he had grade issues too) and made Gatens lose 15 pounds.
