I wrote up an article on some specific things Fran could try to improve the defense. Give it a read and we can discuss it here. I'm just hearing his latest comments about Traore which will bum you out even more after you read the article.

Basic defense philosophy is to stop the ball, stop the dribble drive either by an individual defender or bringing help. If help is necessary, everyone needs to know their defensive rotations to cover the drive and kick. Unfortunately, Iowa is neither quick enough or coached well enough to perform either at a mediocre level.

The next part on defense is to block out and keep the other team from offensive rebounding. Iowa seemingly averages giving up 12 or more offensive boards per game. Ridiculous.

I agree with the rebounding just silly to give up that many offensive rebounds

3 things:

(1) BOX OUT

(2) REBOUND WITH EFFORT

(3) QUIT BEING THE TEAM IN WHITE!!!!!

Employ a no middle defense that attacks the offense. Trap and double where you can. This defense keeps people in weakside rebounding position, something sorely needed.
Above all you much preach defensive intensity and bench those that don’t do it. Base playing time on rebounds.
Hell I’d take a solid pack line philosophy.

McCaffery and Ferentz both think (erroneously) that offense and defense are mutually exclusive.
I see what you’re trying to say but I think Kirk thinks that the offense and defense are in a serious long term monogamous relationship borderline marry your sister stuff.
Kirk wants to do no harm to the defense. There is so much fear of mistakes his offense play with handcuffs. Kirk wants the offense to Serve the defense. Kirk’s wet dream is a special teams score, a safety, and a last second field goal for the win.
Fran sees defense as a Complete inconvenience.
