Has there been any word on his progress? Does he practice?

It would seem a redshirt is planned yet I wonder about him long term.

I wonder if they don’t think about pulling the redshirt if CJ is out for more than a game or two. Just a brutal season for the Hawks.

It's been kinda strange. First, I think, Fran said it was getting the medications right, and, now, all the announcers say is they're making sure the cancer isn't coming back.

There's no RS to pull, he actually played in regular season games. Now, if he doesn't play the rest of the season, he'll be in line for a med hardship, same as JBo. If he plays, that will be a tougher waiver, since he's still in compliance with the rule, but playing will violate the rule. It would still be possible, just harder to get.

In the big picture it is more important to
Patrick himself that the cancer does not
return. He might not have the stamina
at the present time to play basketball.

Pretty sure I heard someone during the game confirm that his situation isn't that cancer has come back, just that it's taken a toll on him physically and he may not be ready for the demands of major college basketball at this time.

Probably has to do with his body's immune system and how well his white cell count advancing. So barring those getting back to normal, expect him to sit the remainder of the year, and hopefully get a medical hardship.

So is he not even practicing? He’s played several full years of high school basketball since he’s been in remission.

I’m aware of the difference. It’s easier just to say redshirt.

Yeah, going forward he might not be able to play more then a one games a week or limit the amount of games he plays in a season. I'm also hoping for good health and free from cancer for his entire life, enough said....

I think you nailed it.

I also think, based on what has been said, that the meds he has to take are messing him up and he just doesn't have the energy to compete the way he needs to be able to compete.

Seems like he could have used a year at a prep school to delay starting his eligibility clock. Playing in that game or two to start this season may come back to bite him if he can’t get his health under control by the start of next season.

But I’d rather see him sit the rest of this year. There are more important things in life than basketball. It just would have been nice to have his scholly filled by a big that can play right now with all of the injuries we’ve had.

Are you comparing the rigors of college basketball to high school basketball?
He basically doesn’t have a thyroid. He can’t put on weight without extreme difficulty, etc. it’s not like he had stage I testicular cancer, had surgery, a few rounds of chemo, and POOF—back to normalcy!

However, I will admit that something seems off about this situation. I really hope the cancer hasn’t returned. The poor kid was originally diagnosed almost 6 years ago...Despite the struggles with after effects, I’m sure he was feeling optimistic he beat this thing for good. Boy, I sure hope that’s the case. Tough kid and by all accounts I’ve heard, has a great family (no, Fran being a hothead sometimes during games doesn’t make him an asshole, sorry).

No intel on whether he’s practicing or not, but I bet he’s doing various shooting drills and some conditioning. They just want to give his body more time and to “recalibrate” physically.

Just my guess but I think they have decided it would be better to not play this year for multiple reasons and are remaining vague about it so that he can get a 5th year if he wants.

Given all the other injuries sustained by this team, Patrick would be playing if he were able,... The whole thing is somewhat concerning...

Basically, he would be taking thyroid medicine, the kind that takes the place of what his thyroid, if it were still there, would be excreting into his body. I remember a story in his first year after the operation, that said Fran was in charge of giving him his meds first thing in the morning. Of course his Mom, if Fran was out of town. What other meds, would be a guess for us, unless some of you are medically trained.

Maybe it's not in remission anymore. Once you have it it never goes completely away. It can reappear somewhere else in the body at anytime.

Freshman forward Patrick McCaffery still isn’t ready, and it doesn’t sound like he will be this year. McCaffery has played only two games this season, and if he plays after Tuesday’s game (the halfway point of the regular season), he would lose any chance to redshirt. McCaffery’s thyroid cancer has not returned, but the medication he takes makes it difficult to maintain consistent physical strength.

“We’re trying to figure out how to get his body right,” Fran McCaffery explained Monday. “He plays in practice some and meets with nutrition people and strength people. He’s seeing some doctors and so forth and trying to figure out how to stabilize his body, because that’s what’s been compromised, so he can maintain strength and stamina and feel better, essentially.”

It’s been a challenge, his father said, but noted that “I think he’ll be better for it next year.”

I hope to God he is OK. Been way too close to cancer and it’s effects many times. Funny (not but sad and typical) that the Clone Twins guy said Pat was faking and was Fran was covering up for him cause didn’t want to embarrass Pat in tough competition. That is a horrible thing to say in an effort of trolling. I just hope Pat is OK regardless of hoops. And maybe all fans regardless of school who have been touched (or cursed) by that disease will tell people who need to troll over cancer to STFU. Ok off the soapbox.

I think you nailed it. My dad had thyroid cancer and if the meds aren’t right you feel like crap. No energy at all. May feel great one week and crappy the next. Meds may work for a while then not so much and meds need to be changed. Some people may get through it without the need to change meds but for some, like my father, it’s ongoing and may be always that way. Maybe it’s the same with Patrick, can’t get the meds dialed in and he lacks the energy to participate.

According to this thread, we had 2 schollies available that could have been used so your point doesn't hold up.
