It's been kinda strange. First, I think, Fran said it was getting the medications right, and, now, all the announcers say is they're making sure the cancer isn't coming back.
I wonder if they don’t think about pulling the redshirt if CJ is out for more than a game or two. Just a brutal season for the Hawks.

Yeah I'm kind of worried about him the cancer was a few years ago. I pray that he's going to be okay even if he doesn't get to pursue his basketball career
Pretty sure I heard someone during the game confirm that his situation isn't that cancer has come back, just that it's taken a toll on him physically and he may not be ready for the demands of major college basketball at this time.
Probably has to do with his body's immune system and how well his white cell count advancing. So barring those getting back to normal, expect him to sit the remainder of the year, and hopefully get a medical hardship.
I’m aware of the difference. It’s easier just to say redshirt. There's no RS to pull, he actually played in regular season games. Now, if he doesn't play the rest of the season, he'll be in line for a med hardship, same as JBo. If he plays, that will be a tougher waiver, since he's still in compliance with the rule, but playing will violate the rule. It would still be possible, just harder to get.
I think you nailed it.Pretty sure I heard someone during the game confirm that his situation isn't that cancer has come back, just that it's taken a toll on him physically and he may not be ready for the demands of major college basketball at this time.

So is he not even practicing? He’s played several full years of high school basketball since he’s been in remission.
He basically doesn’t have a thyroid. He can’t put on weight without extreme difficulty, etc. it’s not like he had stage I testicular cancer, had surgery, a few rounds of chemo, and POOF—back to normalcy! Are you comparing the rigors of college basketball to high school basketball?

However, I will admit that something seems off about this situation. I really hope the cancer hasn’t returned. The poor kid was originally diagnosed almost 6 years ago...Despite the struggles with after effects, I’m sure he was feeling optimistic he beat this thing for good. Boy, I sure hope that’s the case. Tough kid and by all accounts I’ve heard, has a great family (no, Fran being a hothead sometimes during games doesn’t make him an asshole, sorry).
Few topics on this board can you speak for everyone but I think you can go ahead on this oneI for one hope is not the latter.
Basically, he would be taking thyroid medicine, the kind that takes the place of what his thyroid, if it were still there, would be excreting into his body. I remember a story in his first year after the operation, that said Fran was in charge of giving him his meds first thing in the morning. Of course his Mom, if Fran was out of town. What other meds, would be a guess for us, unless some of you are medically trained.I think you nailed it.
I also think, based on what has been said, that the meds he has to take are messing him up and he just doesn't have the energy to compete the way he needs to be able to compete.
Maybe it's not in remission anymore. Once you have it it never goes completely away. It can reappear somewhere else in the body at anytime. So is he not even practicing? He’s played several full years of high school basketball since he’s been in remission.
I think you nailed it. My dad had thyroid cancer and if the meds aren’t right you feel like crap. No energy at all. May feel great one week and crappy the next. Meds may work for a while then not so much and meds need to be changed. Some people may get through it without the need to change meds but for some, like my father, it’s ongoing and may be always that way. Maybe it’s the same with Patrick, can’t get the meds dialed in and he lacks the energy to participate.I think you nailed it.

You're sick. Please get help.Gonna be a downer...ill put a $50 that he doesn't play in the next 2 years in carver Hawkeye
According to this thread, we had 2 schollies available that could have been used so your point doesn't hold up.Seems like he could have used a year at a prep school to delay starting his eligibility clock. Playing in that game or two to start this season may come back to bite him if he can’t get his health under control by the start of next season.
But I’d rather see him sit the rest of this year. There are more important things in life than basketball. It just would have been nice to have his scholly filled by a big that can play right now with all of the injuries we’ve had.
