My god that was a lot of misses. Difference in the game IMO. Anyone have count?

Cordell was 1-4 today, but he still is the best shooter among our big guys, shooting 61%. At least he's got his free throw shooting up to about 80% the last three games. We had a lot of guys 0 or 1 for whatever today, with Moss being 1-6, Wagner 1-3, Baer 3-10, Ellingson 1-4, Uhl 0-2, Williams 1-3 and Kriener took one shot. Fact is, we couldn't hit today. And Jordan did a lot better today than his 0-8 last game. Mamma said there'd be days like this.

Can't blame Pemsl when Baer, Ellingson, Uhl, Williams, and Moss go 6-25. Not going to pick on freshman when returning players consistently contribute at this level. Good thing we are getting so much from these guys with experience. For as high as I have been on Moss' potential, I see digression, not improvement, as the year progresses.

Fran has to get 1-2 better guards in here or we will see yesterday's performance play out all next season minus Jok.

Pemsl is below 50% from the field in Big Ten games. His FT shooting has always been an odd stat to me.....his shot looks good....plenty of rotation....but just didnt go in consistently. Hopefully the change we see in his % recently is a sign of things to come.

Its funny because Cordell makes the crazy shots, but lately he's been missing a bunch of easier ones. Have been optimistic to see both him and Cook look like they're making some solid improvement on those free throws. That should be areal plus going forward.

Pemsl was rarely missing the bunnies in a several game stretch, but now he is for some odd reason. I have faith he will turn it around though. The kid has some moves down low doesn't he, just imagine when gets another year or two on him. Wow, he could be really good.

This has been a problem with Iowa hoops going back at least to the Lick era. I have never seen a team that misses more bunnies than the Hawks.....consistently, on a year to year basis.

Fran teams seem especially prone to it. Never seen a Hawk team struggle with going up strong like his teams do.

It's like they never practice it. Something about his philosophy where you just go to the hoop and put it up as quickly as possible instead of gathering themselves to go up with power or accuracy...like he espouses quickness with the close shot over strength.

If it's an entire era thing, to me, that means how they do it is practiced and they are told to never stray from it.

For as long as I can remember, going back to the 70's, Iowa has had individual inside players that miss a lot of inside shots - I don't think it's a Fran thing.

The problem is that in order to get those shots in the first place, you have to be big and strong - and you have to be strong all the way to the rim. But, then you need a soft touch to get them to go in consistently.

Those guys are hard to find. Ed Horton is one that immediately comes to mind that could do it. Jess Settles, Chris Street.

But, even Aaron White missed tons of 2-4 footers in his career. It's harder than it looks.

Could it be that Hawk fans notice an Iowa player missing a bunny more than they notice players form other teams?

Wasn't that long ago that people here were complaining that instead of going up quick, Woody would gather himself and give the defense time to get on him. Can't win, I guess.

I agree with the first part, a person notices way more when it's the team you're rooting for. I highly doubt iowa misses anymore than the opponent on average. Cook seems to be learned to gather himself better and going up strong. Kid has a super bright future.

I actually think cook needs to slow it down to. Get the defender in the air then go up and draw the foul. Far too many times he gets the ball and goes right up for the shot only to have it blocked. He will learn. Pemsl, otoh, has missed some wide open layups lately.

Cook was very slow & methodical in backing his opponent down yesterday..the dude is really hard to knock around.

I agree ...sometimes we seem to throw it up there but then again not easy to shoot in balance under the basket with some of the B1G contact going on...they don't see this sort of physical contact in high school..

Cook had three or four put ins yesterday where he did slow down and go strong for two. I think he will eventually do it all the time and will be darn near unstoppable.

Agree that Cook's more deliberate play is something that roommate Cordell should emulate. Pemsl's three missed shots today were when he was going fast (for him) and a little out-of-control, with a bad shot angle. I think kids have to play somewhat within their body habitus. Lean and quick kids like Baer, Moss and Jok might be able to shoot at a quicker speed. Kids with the bigger bodies like Wagner, Pemsl and Cook occupy more space and maybe have a fraction of a second more to establish themselves before letting the shot off.

Love Wagner, but shooting seems to be a real challenge. He did not even draw iron one time from 2 foot.

38% shooting will lose you 90% of your games. 31% shooting in the 2nd half will lose you 95% of your games. We just couldn't buy a basket yesterday.

Back in the day, Michael Paign missed a lot of bunnies too, especially his first two years.
