There was 3-4 NBA level players on the teams earlier. Of course, his sons played a lot of minutes instead of two of them.
Now there is Mulvey, Brauns, Harding, Sandforts, Dembelee.
Dix is a good player, goes quiet at times.
Fran is just not a good coach at this point, not many schools would let him continue as the head coach at this point
I would be very curious to see what Fran could do with hypothetical 5 star athletes.
I'm also curious how the new recuits look next year with him as coach.
But, at this point, I am soo absolutley sick of this routine with him every season, no matter the talent level, it's beyond fatigue. So I just want him gone at years end, even though it's probably not gonna happen.
I would imagine the Beth conversations with him are about the talent level this year compared to being improved next year, and with Freeman out - that's icing on the excuse cake for this year. I don't know what it would take for her to strongly suggest he accept some retirement / buyout packages at years end. Pressure from boosters?

Yes, the talent was better on those teams. I recall Garza was considered a good recruit, but who among us had any clue he would become the school's all-time leading scorer or anything close to it? So Fran kind of caught lightning in a bottle there.
The Murray twins obviously worked out great, but I guess Kenyon ran out of sons that he could keep funneling through the program.
I don't buy the Freeman injury as an excuse for this year. Won't help down the stretch obviously, but as it's been pointed out, this team was going nowhere even with him.
Alford had the good sense to leave on his own. Davis gave Iowa a Sweet16. This Fran guy is tanking the team or a complete moron. If his heart is not into coaching and he's waiting to get fired for the full buyout, than that is not honorable. HIs Kid killed a guy and his family issued a statement it was "unavoidable" when their boy didn't even brake when he passed a stopped car in a cross walk---was that an honorable press release/response? No ****ing way that accident was unavoidable.
The stopped car was driven by someone who waved the jogger into the crosswalk. Fran's son, driving next to the stopped car couldn't see/didn't expect the jogger to be crossing.
True, but, there is still a crossing and should be aware.
As a former runner, interactions with cars were not fun. Bad situation for everyone involved

Hold on a minute. We HAVE had Owen all season, up until these last couple games, anyway. We saw the result and it wasn't too good.
As for Cooper, it's hard to say, but I'm not sure it's fair to expect a true freshman to carry the team unless you're talking a Carmelo Anthony type of talent.
So to answer your question, I don't think things would be very different.
Wisconsin trailed by 1 with about 7 minutes to go. Was their play up to that point "garbage"?

That’s fair. We are never loaded with talent obviously but we needed everyone possible to even make the tourney (B1G or otherwise).

I've seen you post this exact response or some variation of this post -- i.e., blaming some other poster for failing to understand what you've written -- at least half a dozen times in the past week alone. Do you really think that many fans can't read, or have poor reading comprehension? They were playing like a middle of the conference team with Freeman,.. Definitely not excelling.
Your desires don't equal reality,.. Playing their absolute best ball minus Freeman, Iowa might have realistically been able to pull off a 6-8 point win on Saturday...

Regarding Cooper Koch, if I could pick one guy on the team for the new coach to retain for next year it would be him. If he can get healthy I think he's got 1st team All Big Ten potential.

You are inferring since we don’t have Owen that this is ok because of the excuse of we don’t have Owen. You are also basically saying we had non-garbage basketball with Owen from this comment. There are multiple other ones as well that I have read but you have that Fran glaze fogging up your eyes.

Has nothing to do with the struggles of this team. For example, Lickliter's teams were closer to garbage, and fan behavior at that time was completely inexcusable and embarrassing

How about Beth forcing his hand with an external hire as his co-head coach? Let Fran deal with that humiliation! Two can play this game if Beth has the fortitude we expect in this role.
