It won't be the weather that gets SMU. Tennessee will be a huge test for OSU and the weather should not hinder what they want to do anymore than it is for OSU.
Really will depend on the temperature. I would venture a guess that many of the "skill" position players have never played in weather in the 40's, let alone the teens. Big difference throwing, catching, and holding on to the ball then instead of the 70's and 80's when your fingers are nice and nimble.

I don't think many realize the risk the B1G has here in the opening round of the playoffs. All I'm saying is this, we've been saying for decades, "Well, what if these southern teams had to come up and play outside in the cold instead of down in Florida for a bowl game."

The B1G is finally getting its wish with southern speed SMU and southern speed Tennessee both traveling up north to play in Columbus and Happy Valley.

I think going 1-1 in those games hurts B1G reputation, but I can't imagine what 0-2 would do. It wouldn't be good.

The fields should be in pretty good shape and not sure if they are real grass and heated.

But the cold and possible gusty winds will affect them. The winds affect both teams and Tenn is less likely to be acclimated to the cold.

Boy, Ryan Day needs to win this game bad, I mean really bad. I saw a headline where Day said some questionable things they did against Mich. I didnt read the artitcle but I might now.

Ohio Stadium has multiple heating systems to keep the field and stadium warm, including fan coils, chillers, and glycol systems:

  • Fan coils: 144 fan coils are run 24/7 to heat different areas of the stadium.

  • Chillers: Six chillers produce chilled water for the stadium.

  • Glycol systems: A system of miles of piping beneath the field circulates a heated glycol solution to prevent the field from freezing. Boiler rooms deep within the stadium circulate the glycol.

  • Heat trace piping: Heat trace piping wraps electric cables around pipes to raise their temperature.

  • Portable heaters: Portable heaters are used in concession stands.

Beaver Stadium in Pennsylvania has undergone winterization upgrades to allow the building to be used when temperatures are below freezing. These upgrades include insulation on pipes and other improvements.

Under-soil heating systems use a network of pipes to circulate warm water or air beneath the soil or turf of a stadium. This system can help prevent ice and snow from accumulating on the field. Some stadiums use these systems to maintain the ideal playing surface throughout the season, not just in cold weather. For example, the Kansas City Chiefs use their system to keep the soil at the right temperature for growing grass and keeping the soil soft

tOSU's road to the Natty is pretty difficult.

#6 ranked Ohio State likely would have to beat these 4 teams in order to win the National Championship:

#7 ranked Tennessee (at home)
#1 ranked Oregon (who got a bye) in the Quarterfinals
#3 ranked Texas in the Semifinals
#2 ranked Georgia in the National Championship

If they ended up beating
all 3 SEC teams that are in the field that would really be something and would make a huge statement for not only tOSU but for the B1G.

CFP Final Rankings:

(Teams in BOLD made the 12 team field)

1. Oregon (13-0)................1st Round Bye
2. Georgia (11-2)...............1st Round Bye

3. Texas (11-2)
4. Penn State (11-2)
5. Notre Dame (11-1)
6. Ohio State (10-2)
7. Tennessee (10-2)
8. Indiana (11-1)
9. Boise State (12-1)..........1st Round Bye
10. SMU (11-2)

11. Alabama (9-3)
12. Arizona State (11-2).....1st Round Bye
13. Miami (10-2)
14. Ole Miss (9-3)
15. South Carolina (9-3)
16. Clemson (10-3)

I can’t recall (maybe Tennessee??) but recently some SEC school was wearing long sleeve shirts due to the “cold” 50 degree weather they were playing in!

Needed heated benches, too.

As I mentioned above, Saturday's Tennessee at Ohio State game kicks off at 8 pm local time. The temp might reach 30 degrees during the day but obviously will drop after the sun sets; the wind chill is supposed to be a few degrees lower than the air temp with an expected 7 mph wind.

This was from the Nov 16 Tennessee at Georgia game:

If you're as good as you think you are than you should be at all those teams. Don't choke against a mediocre Michigan team because you're trying to prove a point. The playoff didn't ruin college football btw. It's enhanced it

Indiana would've complained all off-season if they had been left out. Some say Boise shouldn't have gotten a bye, I might've agreed had Texas only had the one loss or Ohio State only had one loss. But they didn't and Boise beat everybody on their schedule except for undefeated Oregon in Eugene. Miami choked against two average ACC teams and Alabama had three losses . Two of them being very bad losses. Ole Miss also has a really bad loss and two other losses to mediocre squads.

So I think the committee got it right. Penn State has a slightly easier road than Ohio State because they had one less regular season loss and none that were really damaging. Ohio State beat them which they were given credit for until they lost to a very mediocre Michigan team in Columbus. So wins and losses did matter.

Don't think the weather is going to play too much havoc on this weekend games outside of the temp. Looks like South Bend, State College, and Columbus will all be cold but no active snow or ice.

I still think the temps alone will affect SMU and Tenn. Indian will not care what it is like in South Bend. I like all of the home teams in this upcoming weekend.

OSU has the same or more speed as any SEC team. Where OSU has struggled mightily this year is on the oline. You saw it vs Nebraska and then again vs Michigan. The OSU oline is going to struggle to run the ball vs a very good Tennessee defense. That's going to be a problem for them.

I agree with you; I think all of the home teams win. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if IU won at ND and that the B1G ends up with 4 teams in the Elite 8.

I also agree that the temp/wind chill will be a factor in these 2 games:

For SMU at Penn State: early morning temp of 23 degrees, with a daytime high of 28 degrees. Winds of 15 mph will create a 17 degree feels like temp. At least they are playing in daylight. ;)

For Tennessee at Ohio State (night game): early morning temp of 23 degrees, with a daytime high of 30 degrees. Temps will drop to 18 degrees late into the evening (the game kicks off at 8:00 pm local time and won't end until around MIDNIGHT, local time). Winds of 7 mph will create a 14 degree feels like temp as the game approaches midnight.

My in-laws are all from South Bend and most went to ND. I love the matchup as an outside observer because IU is an afterthought for football in that region and ND fans look WAY down on them. I think ND wins but I also think IU will give them more than they necessarily want Friday night.

Bud lost home games in the playoffs in back to back years to warm weather teams. I always thought he was somewhat over rated. From 1969 to 1971 that defense gave up 10 points a game, how did he not manage to win a Super Bowl?
Kirk's idol?

And yet look at the Bills who lost 4 super bowls in a row with a high powered offense!
