How will SMU (at Penn St) & Tennessee (at Ohio St) perform in the cold & possible snow?

I don’t think it’s going to be cold enough to really affect SMU and Tennessee. Temps in the 20’s aren’t unheard of in Knoxville or Dallas.

THAT BEING SAID…

The SEC fanboys on Twitter acting like their winters are comparable to the Midwest are complete idiots. And OSU is one of the southernmost Big Ten campuses, so them acting tough about their weather is also annoying.

The wind chill doesn't look like much fun for anyone.

For SMU at Penn State (day game): 17 degree feels like temp.

For Tennessee at Ohio State (night game): 14 degree feels like temp as the game approaches the end, at midnight local time.

Both states act as if the world is going to end and cancel school for weeks when they get any snow. It will certainly be a factor.

Ohio State fans reportedly are saving their money for the quarterfinals in Pasadena. As a result, 30,000+ Tennessee fans allegedly will be at the Shoe.

That number is hard to believe; I guess we’ll see with our own eyes in 2 days.

It’s a 5 ½ hour drive from Knoxville, TN to Columbus; it’s a 5-hour, 40-minute drive from Nashville, TN to Columbus. Vol fans could drive up the day of the game since kickoff is not until 8:00 pm local time.

Vol fans have been starving for football success; doesn’t look like they are gonna pass up this game.

Would Ryan Day survive if they get knocked out at home in the 1st round of the CFP (after losing to Michigan at home)?

Where this is discussed (gotta love radio guys):

I went to ASU for undergrad and I always chuckle at the idea of toughness being a strictly cold weather thing. I had a Michigan State fan throw up on me due to the heat in Az during a game. So many teams can’t handle heat either.

I think heat affects players (and maybe fans) more than cold. I certainly prefer exercising in the cold. I’ve stated in multiple threads that the notion of teams from the South not being able to handle the cold ranges somewhere from overrated to hogwash. I don’t know if we’ll have a definitive answer this weekend, but I’d say there’s a lot of pressure on Penn St - getting upset at home in a huge game by a Southern team fresh out of the G-5 ranks with wind chills in the teens would look really, really bad for the tough Midwest/Rust Belt guy image…

ESPN previews the tough weather conditions for Tennessee at Ohio State.

In this video they discuss that the forecasted low for Saturday night is 12 degrees; that means the feels like temp will be in the single digits.

That wasn't the heat. That was to many Busch lights.

The temperature is often overstated. What is nice to see is defacto home games not in play in the first round games.

The NFL plays games on 4 days of the week: Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

It will be interesting to see what the ratings for these 5 games are.

People wanted this playoff. The games have to be played sometime. Just one more thing for people to be unhappy about….

I don't think many realize the risk the B1G has here in the opening round of the playoffs. All I'm saying is this, we've been saying for decades, "Well, what if these southern teams had to come up and play outside in the cold instead of down in Florida for a bowl game."

The B1G is finally getting its wish with southern speed SMU and southern speed Tennessee both traveling up north to play in Columbus and Happy Valley.

I think going 1-1 in those games hurts B1G reputation, but I can't imagine what 0-2 would do. It wouldn't be good.
LSU came to Wisconsin and rode home with a loss.

My wife's grandfather was at the Chosin Resevoir in 1950 in Korea. Combat in -40s wind chill without proper gear. Loved listening to his stories. Will never complain about being too cold at a football game.
my father in law was there as well, how they did it is beyond rational.....

There has never been a more overrated product than contemporary NFL.

I think it may actually be starting to regress back to some legitimacy though. We'll see
Well, it’s a little hard for the pro sports league with the highest revenue and television ratings to be “underrated”….

so far the games have been stinkers---and to think some want to dilute it further and invite even more teams.

FCS up to 24 teams now and if you paid attention they had some real doozy lopsided scores in the first rounds--I have to ask why?
