Hurricane Milton reaches Category 5 strength on approach to Florida

I have no idea why anyone would stay for the storm. Too late now.

Why is Florida not making all 4 lanes of I-75 open to north bound traffic only? You got bumper to bumper on N. Bound lanes but the S. bound lanes are empty.

Alabama made I-65 all four lanes for Hurricane Dennis in 2005
They can make two and four lane roads one way away from NASCAR races in Richmond, VA but can’t figure out how to do these kinds of things in some areas for Hurricanes. Doesn’t surprise me in the least when dealing with some people within government out of touch with reality.

Also, make both directions one way except for one lane or the shoulder should you need to go the opposite direction. It’s not hard to figure this stuff out. On a positive yesterday, they did open the shoulders to the lanes on alligator alley so there were four lanes instead of two.

We have a MAGA governor.... they're not known to be the smartest

I’d hope the Governor isn’t pulled into the type of decision as the DOT should be capable of making this decision based upon traffic flow or not flowing and whether they are allowing traffic to go in the opposite direction.

Because they're a lot of fun. I've yet to evacuate for a storm living on the gulf coast or NOLA for 15 years

Come on dude, you should know MAGA by now

I think they did make I-75 all one way during Irma. Maybe there were some unintended problems with that?

Shit is about to get real. Sorry for the folks that stayed behind by choice. I don't have much sympathy. Rescue workers should not have to risk their lives for the negligence of others.
Ok, cool? Pretty pointless to share but whatever.

This. It should be law that people who ignore warnings to leave forfeit the responsibilities of first responders to attempt to save them.

They did open the shoulders going northbound but I wonder if the thinking was that the power crews and emergency workers who needed to be on site ready to go as soon as possible. I think that’s the only logical reason.

I'm sure you are right. But they are not sending in power crews until after the storm.

They have them gathered in safe spots waiting for the all clear sign and more are coming from three and four states away.
There’s a large regional mall here in Jax at I-95 and US1 and the trucks are already gathered there and filling up the parking lot, waiting to head out as needed. 50,000 electrical workers total gathered in clusters around the state.

Time for some folks to make overtime.
