Hurricane Milton reaches Category 5 strength on approach to Florida

Far more than a billion dude...~90% of human population lives within ~20 miles of the coast
100 years ago world population was under 2 billion.

We've built housing for 6 billion since then.
2 billion people added in the last 20 years.
If a billion need to be somewhere else, that will be built too.

Whatever it does you will find that the temperature does not change nearly as rapidly as the bottom of that graph. Maybe 65 million years ago after the Chicxulub impact that pretty much ended dinosaurs might be comparable.

And maybe during the PETM...but our are oceans acidifying faster now than then, so maybe not

MAGA logic folks, MAGA logic
UN expects another 2 billion to be added to the world population by 2100.

Is your logic that a world that constructed homes for 2 billion souls in the last 20 years can’t accommodate more construction than that in the next 80?

So much of what we utilize was built in our own lifetimes. The factories that make the things you consume, and the places most people live today, didn’t even exist before you were born. New things will continue to be created after you die.

Please stop dude, just stop.

It ain't just housing, idiot...you're not taking into account all the Infrastructure to support the population in a completely new area or if the new area's water resources can even support the new population or the reduction in quality of life because of said expenses in moving the population or what happens in areas that afford the costs so there's mass migration, etc.

Would you just hurry up and cum, you've been edging for hours now.

We built that too!!!
You think we discovered sewer lines and decided to zone it for housing?

or if the new area's water resources can even support the new population or

There’s more than ample water for population. It’s farming that gets away with not paying for water that uneconomically wastes it.
Let the almond farmers buy their water at market rates and you’ll have plenty to wash your ass.
This is why systems matter for how you respond to changing circumstances.

You’re not appreciating the degree to which capital stock (housing, infrastructure, all of it) is continually built and renewed.
In 30 years do you think people will want a house that was built in 1980? Or one that was built in 2050?
The renewal of the capital stock is going to happen regardless, yet you act like it’s an insufferable burden, and that the world doesn’t continue to grow wealth whilst continually doing it.

Did you work in the Engineering department for a Water Utility? Because I did, so I might know just a little more about this subject than you....no, I know 20x more than this subject than you.

Will you hurry up and fvcking finish?

jreed babbling about GAIA in this thread.

That tells me this climate change crap is more like a religious belief than science.

Lol.....you can sleep well tonight Trad, I found an idiot that's even worse than debating you on the subject back in the day.

And the idea that you don't fvcking know after 20 years of explaining that to you that i use GAIA as a frame of reference for the combined interactions of all species and not an actual entity.... explains it perfectly of why you ended up MAGA.

You can't make this shit up

read somewhere about the deep deep waters in the gulf, still very cold waters, can get churned to the surface by a hurricane and that can weaken the system as well.

I may be wrong, but I think upwelling of cool water is more of a phenomenon in the Atlantic. The Gulf is more shallow and warm. That's partly why storms in the gulf often have explosive intensification.

I can't remember any hurricaine during my time doing a direct hit like this. Essentially t-boning the state. It usually rides the northern track and hits with glancing blows (except for a few like Donna, Andrew and Charlie). This is scary as hell looking. But I'm interested to see how much more or less damage this creates coming in like this.

My in laws live in Tampa and are heading here this morning to stay with us. So, I will be wearing shorts/pants at my house for the next few days. Just a warning about why my attitude may be a little off.

We were supposed to have budget meetings in Orlando starting today through the week. My boss and I told the District VP that there is no way in hell we are driving up to Orlando. I think 4 of them ended up flying into Orlando still.

I don’t think some people understand what is about to happen

Me looking for gas in central Florida this morning...

He isn't worthy of a response at this point.

You can make that same claim on any subject where this poster is concerned.

Fortunately it looks like it's going to weaken quite a bit before it hits shore. It's still going to be bad, but a Cat 3 won't do nearly the damage a Cat 5 would. So we can be kind of thankful for that I guess, assuming the forecasts aren't off on its strength at landfall.

I'm rooting for "Team Shear" right now.

Problem is it’s expected to nearly double in size which could significantly enhance the surge. Kind of a pick your poison scenario.

I guess I don’t understand why the surge would be worse if the hurricane weakens.
Even if it grows the surge would be over a wider area but it would not be as much if the hurricane was stronger. I may not be asking this correctly.

Surge depends upon many factors other than overall strength (e.g. tires, angle, offshore topology)...but usually the lower the pressure the greater the surge

Surge is wind-driven sea water. If the wind field is larger, then more places will experience surge. However, height of surge is dictated by the intensity of the winds (and tides), so what Milton is doing could cause more surge up and down the coast, but lessen the total height in any one place.

The wildcard is Tampa Bay. If the western winds are pushing water into the bay it's like a funnel, and it will be bad.

And wind speed is mostly dependent upon pressure....but storms will have vastly different surge with the same windspeed dependent upon where and how the hurricane hits.

One of the unexpected things I experienced during Hurricane Wilma was water being driven by the wind under closed windows and sliding glass doors. They have "weep" channels to allow water to drain out of window frames, but the relentless wind didn't allow the water to weep away, and it instead got pushed under the window and into the house. During the most intense winds, the water was literally spurting like little fountains.

During Ivan it started being pushed up exterior walls and when it started flowing through the cat door I looked out back and there was hardly any water....it took a couple of minutes before it flowed around the house

In Iowa we had an ice/rain storm that froze those little weep holes shut and I had water running over the stills and down the walls...

Wilma is the only storm that brought water up our street from the Historic Seaport and up to our door threshold. During my family's ownership, anyway... since 1967/68.

This is the Wilma floodwater line at our house/side door. It didn't go over but we later figured out it must have hit under the floor as we had to get rid of the carpet due to smell. Never felt wet tho.

Debris piled on street and OPs mom who is now buried about 4 blocks away.
