So i was perusing the Nebraska football forums and came across a thread titled something like "The Iowa Hawkeyes are not unbeatable like many of us think" So of course there were expected posts that were drivel and a couple that basically said that no one had heard anything about us being unbeatable. I decided to add my two cents by merely stating how no one on the Iowa forums are talking about the Hawks being unbeatable. 2016 West Champs? For sure. I think most posters I have seen on here think we have a realistic shot (at worst) to repeat and get back to the Big Ten Champ Game.

So a cornholer responds to my post by saying he thinks Iowa will win between 4-8 games given our history and how we won't get all the breaks to go our way this year. 4 wins??? I literally laughed out loud when I read that. I responded in kind and am waiting for their response.

How many wins does everyone on here think Iowa will pile up next year??

10. I say 10 every year.

And try not to go over to doucheland. They spend most of their time over here on our site and I think we are better than that.

I was just curious as to how the other half lives. Don't plan on going back too often, if at all.

# of wins in 2016? I don't have the first dam clue.

The thing is, Iowa had the "intangibles" going for them, and I don't mean breaks.

I mean the team was coming off a humiliating season, they had a strong group of senior leaders, a new QB that was a big time leader, a new facility to get jazzed about, some new routines (e.g. practice in the morning) and a favorable schedule.

The 2009 Hawks had all the right stuff. The 2010 team had nearly everyone back, but it didn't have the same juice as the 09 team.

2016- we'll see. I'm glad Beatherd is both a senior and a great leader. Hopefully he and the other seniors keep everyone focused on hard work and improvement.

12 wins or not, I think their last 2 games will be more than enough to motivate them over spring/summer. Especially the embarrassment at the RB.

The Hawks won 12 last years and I wouldn't say we got a lot of breaks. All of our RB's were injured at some point during the season. OL, DL, WR and LB all had starters go down as well as TE. We didn't win a game due to a call by an official either. So while 2015 was historic it wasn't as if everything fell just right which was why the Hawks were undefeated in the regular season.

I didn't know Iowa fans were allowed on the Nebraska board. I am sure they are predicting Nebraska to go 11-1 this year. Heck, I've lived in Nebraska for 4-5 years and every football season I've lived here the fans and sports radio come to an 11-1 consensus it seems.

10-2 is the expected annual outcome at worst for Nebraska. This has been made pretty apparent given 2 of their last 3 coaching changes, which followed 9-win campaigns. Riley is on an even shorter leash thanks to Nebraska backing into a bowl and settling for a losing season. If he doesn't sniff 8-9 wins this year, 2017 will be all or nothing for him, at least in Husker fans' minds.

As for Iowa, the difference between this coming season after a big previous year, and other similar situations is that we're coming off of two tough defeats, one heartbreaking and the other sobering. So that leaves the team with two options: get better or go back to being a lesser-known hiding in the shadows waiting for their chance to surprise and find that that opportunity won't come while those current players are in school........I'd like to think they chose to get better, and that the rest of the Big Ten didn't magically become insanely more talented than them in the process......o_O

We're certainly not unbeatable. But we can also certainly win the division and play for the conference title again. All depends on progress....

Those Nebraska fans! You see one and you can count on at least 3 or 4 more milling around the baseboards close by. There's nothing like it. Where ever I go they have to show up. Found them on my professional trips to California, DC, Minnesota, Winnipeg, and even in Belgium and the Netherlands. It gets tiresome to find them spreading like a bad disease. Sometimes I hear "Go Big Red" in my sleep. Anyone else experience that problem?

Unlikely, but we could win 12 again. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we won 7-8 either though.

The "breaks" Iowa got last year came in the form of their schedule, which they can't control, and in the form of turnovers, which they can control. Iowa was amazingly efficient at keeping the ball and getting the ball from their opponents.

Again this year, Iowa has a very favorable schedule. The key to the season will be whether or not they can get the ball away from the teams they play, and hold the ball. Do that and 12-0 isn't out of the question.

Since turnovers are key, I'll say 9 wins minimum.

I suppose, then, that there must be a local "Belgians for Nebraska" chapter in Brussels, no? Sigh...

When they talk of Iowa as being unbeatable, I think that means they don't believe Nebraska can beat Iowa.

A side note to that is we were brutal at recovering fumbles in 2014 only recovering 9/32, but were a little better than 50/50 last year. The stats show that while you have some control over how many times you fumble and often your opponents fumble, how many you recover is more of a luck thing.

Many cornhuskers think we just got lucky last year. We did have some breaks go our way to be certain but what they are not looking at is most of those breaks were caused by our play. Close games are generally decided by 6-8 plays during the game and we made most of those plays last year. Perfect example was that interception and four yard return during the NU Game. NU had that play perfectly set up(it would have been a very long game or TD). Iowa made that play because our DB came in unblocked and Hesse was in the perfect spot to get the interception. On Hesse's part it was not luck either it was preparation. We earned every win.

Lived there from 84-86. Kind of adopted Oklahoma as my 2nd favorite team during that stretch. The whole state knows nothing beyond Nebraska football. At that time they knew some players on Oklahoma but for the most part they didn't know any other sports or any other college football teams for that matter.

1984 Olympics started and the front page of the Omaha Herald sports page was about Terry Rodgers kid was coming to Nebraska over USC.

I never heard Go Big Red in my sleep but I always laughed at these tools acting as if Nebraskas accomplishments were therieaccomplishments. That's how sad their lives are.

I will say this, I went to many games in Lincoln and the fans there were much nicer than the Internet dumbasses that seem obsessed with our board. Which is probably a good thing. The fans at the game were usually pretty nice and that's even when I had a Boz haircut with a bandana and #44 Oklahoma jersey sitting in the student section for Oklahoma-Nebraska 1986. Jamellie hits Keith Jackson for a TD with a minute and change to tie. Nebraska cowers on offense and Oklahoma gets ball back and once again Holieway hits Jackson on a great 1 hand catch and they kick game winning FG. Probably the greatest game I've ever watched in the stands.

Not one nebraska fan in the stands gave me any shit and maybe thats because I was well behaved. Happy but not rubbing it in anyones face.

I work with 2 Nebraska dumbasses and they are whinny bitches.

Hesses play was huge but he made it.

Remember we fumbled a punt return on their 25 and gave them a short field which was unlucky.

We got luck on recovering a fumble on a KO return by McCarron.

It goes both ways usually in games.

I went to the Iowa-Nebraska game last yr. Before, during, and after the game their fans were respectful. I listened to a Nebraska football station on the way home and they where ripping on their QB and Riley's coaching of the offense. No more then when Hawk fans ripped on Ferentz.

I lived in Minnesota, lived in Eastern Iowa close to Illinois, and have family in Wisconsin. I ran into obnoxious fans in each of those states. Especially if I wore Hawk gear. I always hated Illinois fans a little more because I worked with them and it became almost a daily ribbing between me and their fans.

When I hear how bad Husker fans r, I take it with a grain of salt. It depends what fans u live close to and how often u have to see them. Plus Iowa fans can be just as obnoxious as any fans from other states. I've seen it at Iowa home games.

I definitely think Iowa has a great chance of winning the West and going back to the B1G Championship. QB play is so huge. Iowa has a good one who is a fantastic leader. Always a good line, and a good set of RBs. Hoping that NU has that combination in the next few years. One team I'm wondering about is Wiscy. Anyone know what kind of team they have coming back this Fall?

They lost their DC(D is what won/kept them in most games), qb and best defensive player...and clement didn't see much action last year due to his injuries(a negative imo). That and the fact they have to play MSU OSU and MI, I highly doubt it they'll be in the running for indy. I think black friday is going to decide that for the west.

I think Iowas defense will be better this year than last year- with Ott its no contest and I am assuming he is not back. The back 7 should be fantastic and I think the dline will be fine.
On offense the line actually has a good amount of experience. I like our backs. At receiver the biggest key is who can be a legit downfield threat. Iowa just had a guy who ran about a 4.3 forty and they didn't really utilize him that much. So it begs the question of is that really ever going to change. I hope it will but don't think we should hold our breath. I think Kittle will be really good. So much comes down to CJ and his health. We all know that.

Again- the schedule is very forgiving. Even the NDST game is in Iowas favor this year. They did lose a lot. I see Iowa winning 10 games. I will say Mich is a loss and they lose to PSU on the road. With the wild card being that game against the Golden Moles. So 9 or 10 is really very achievable.

I'd like to think black Friday will decide that, but I'm just not convinced Nebraska is still going to be in the B1G picture by then. Look, I'm as happy as anyone that they got a win against UCLA, but I haven't seen near enough out of them as a whole to think they'll still be in the picture come November. I really hope that I'm proven wrong. NU has these amazing receivers, and no QB to throw to them. Line was patchy, and they still don't have a starting back that is any kind of home run threat. I have NU 6-5 going in to black Friday. Again, I hope I'm proven wrong.

Kind of OT, but I'm actually really excited for the future of the Hawkeye/Husker rivalry. With Wisconsin going through a down stretch, and an uptick in recruiting for both Iowa and Nebby (Riley has been unconscious recruiting since he's been there), I think we're going to be battling it out for first in the West the next few years (maybe not this year for Nebraska).

Wisconsin's schedule is brutal. That alone probably takes them out of the race for the West. I also think that Northwestern and Minnesota take a step back. So that leaves Iowa and Nebraska. Nebraska's success will depend on Armstrong, so it is wildly up in the air. He has a high ceiling, but makes poor decisions on a consistent basis. If Riley/Langsdorf can somehow coach Armstrong to have better decision making and cut his turnovers down by a lot (half?), I think Nebraska wins the West. But that is a huge, huge if.

My only thought on Iowa is they have a reputation for doing well without expectations and under performing when they have high expectations. We will see if Iowa can shake that reputation this year or not.

Extremely skewed schedules not taken into consideration, I think this will be pretty accurate. I don't think Chryst will keep Wisconsin at a high level. And Minnesota's run may very well be at an end without Kill. It looks like it very well come down to Black Friday every year for the West. Which will be pretty fun.

This is very accurate. Iowa had huge expectations in 2005 and 2010 and both seasons were mediocre. The trump card this season is another favorable schedule.

I agree with the schedule. Is it me or has Iowa had a lucky streak on schedules the last few years? Looks like 2017 is when the favorable schedules end (MSU, PSU and Ohio State are the cross over games - ouch). But 2018 looks like a favorable schedule again (depending on PSU staying down).

Nebraska finally gets a year away from MSU in 2016 (we have played them every year since joining the B1G), but trades them for Ohio State. So I wouldn't call that a positive (it looks like them we play them every year now through 2019 and our 2018 schedule looks brutal - Michigan, MSU and Ohio State).

It'll be fun to see how everything shakes out.

Every year? No more down years for the Hawks? WOW!

Well that may be overstating it! I tried to put a caveat to it (the scheduling differences - 2017 schedule looks like it will be in Nebraskas favor). But yes, a time frame would help. Let's say, for the foreseeable future.
