I've been really excited about this guys since he committed. I remember one of his coaches coming on the board and posting a topic about him that was really exciting as well. His interview on here got me really pumped up, seems like the kind of kid who wants to win bad and is going to only get better. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a bunch of minutes this year.

Im with you. You gotta like his attitude and determination, just what we need more of on this team.

Agree. I think this guy will have the biggest impact on the team with his defense, athleticism, intensity and versatility. I think he will bring some toughness that we haven't had since Mays and Gatens.

Sounds like Woodbury is letting him know what a B10 screen feels like.:D

Hutton, Wagner, and Fleming all mentioned that they are practically eating and breathing basketball all day long this summer. Putting in extra time with the weights and cardio also. Man, I wish Moss was here training with them.

also...... everybody is talking about Hutton's defense skills (including Hutton himself) but it seems to me that he is looking to be a scoring option also. If I remember his statement correctly, he shoots every day until he counts 350 made baskets. That would probably be somewhere in the neighborhood of 600-700 shots daily. That tells me that he doesn't plan on just watching his teammates work for a basket while he is taking a breather on the offensive end of the court.

Previously, somebody on here posted that he absolutely should redshirt! I think that poster was Legend 12. He appears to be holding his own, so Legend 12, with all your inside info, what is the real deal? Should he redshirt or not, and why?

I have never said Hutton would or should redshirt, and I would be very surprised if he did. I think the most likely candidates at this time are Moss and Williams, with Moss being the one I expect to see.

Sorry to have called you out if wrong. I guess I need to do better research.

Expect to see play, or redshirt?

Tell ya what is nice. We're looking at guys and thinking they might redshirt, not because they couldn't provide some solid minutes in a rotation, but because we're so deep we don't know if we can play them all!

I'm still not certain but that we couldn't make serviceable point guards out of more than just Williams from this bunch. All we really need is a couple bigs of at least the defense and rebounding variety and between two classes we could be set for upper half and better basketball in the Big Ten for three years after this one. AND, between the McCaffery's and Weiskamp, it looks like were set up for the future beyond.

Someone did post a while back that they thought he would redshirt, for reasons I assumed to be unrelated to basketball. It seems like it was someone claiming some insider knowledge, but I really don't remember. Guess we will see.

You could say I did. I just bumped up a long thread where I took my guesswork as to how the new guys would look. You won't find any claims of insider knowledge however.

It just doesn't seem like a redshirt? Particularly if Wisconsin offered him a scholly and Indiana was looking at him. Also, his attitude in that interview just seemed to project confidence and leadership. I just don't see it happening and think he could be a difference maker this year.

Mohawkeye, the more I think about this, this couldn't be what you remember, is it?

"Redshirt? I could believe it. It might be hard though keeping that kind of energy off the court. IF Brandon redshirts I don't recommend letting it indicate some lack of ability. This kid is the pure, true definition of recruit, retain, develop. The kind of guy that wins games for teams, without touching the ball. It was a great win to land Brandon Hutton for the future of the program.", from May 23rd.

This class has me excited about the future of Iowa basketball. Maybe no single "stars" but lots of "solid" players who over the course of time could gel into something very special.

I'm pretty sure it was someone claiming insider info. That is why it stuck in my mind. So, no.

I may be wrong, but I think Gasser mentioned it in the Lounge at one point. Not sure if he said it was inside info or a feeling, but many assumed he was speaking with some knowledge of the situation.

you are correct Legend it was Gasser....and I believe most took his words as coming from inside info...but that was before PTL started...and maybe even before they knew Moss would be staying in Chicago for the summer..

honestly I don't think IMO that Fran knows in July who may redshirt...all he has said is someone could (because of the numbers)...then again maybe no one will want to ... regardless of playing time.

I admit I wasn't really excited about this class until this Spring, although I did think Flemming could be a stud.

But now I see the buzz around Hutton and others, and I'm starting to think Jones could be the most important addition of the Entire group next year.

Fran finally has the program fully stocked with talent he had to really work hard to assemble.

Now the fun begins!

I agree completely, I doubt any redshirt decisions (outside of an injury) will be made until the coaches have had the opportunity to get all of these guys together in practice this fall. I think Fran's comment was more based on numbers than an inclination that specific guys would redshirt.

This is correct.

Legend, you are correct, it was Hawkgasser in a post on Apr 20, 2015. Quote: "No one is going to like this but Hutton is the most likely redshirt because of multiple factors." He followed that up with, "Not an opinion guys." Other than that he did not explain why.

Numbers alone point to at least one redshirt or a transfer at the end of the season. I hope Fran can keep everyone happy but I don't see how it's possible.

Almost no kid wants to red shirt and Hutton seems to be from the warrior class of players. Hence, getting Hutton to buy into a red shirt would be an especially hard sell. I've noticed more than a couple people who have now seen Hutton compare him to Eric May. If so, that kid will impact games without touching the ball.

Thing I like from Hutton's interviews and Fleming too is that they understand they may not always be playing a ton of minutes but know still plenty of opportunities to contribute. Basically hope all the freshman are patient and realize that sophomore year is where they can really see a lot more opportunity for playing time with 4 seniors on roster this year who will take up a lot of minutes.

I remember that discussion. I questioned how he could be so definitive, but was told he had as much inside information as anybody so I dropped it.

He could very well be correct. I'm doubting the coaching staff makes significant decisions such as redshirting based on PTL action, but I'd still like to know the reason why he is so certain (if he still is).

Other than Wlliams, because of coming from a small school and having seniors MG and Sapp in front of him, the only reason I could see one of these guys red shirting is grades. Those are also the only reasons I could see Fran being able to predict a RS.

You just generally don't want a class of six guys. You have two guys who will likely play almost exclusively SG in this class (Ellingson/Flemming) and two other guys that could play there (Williams and Moss). I think that makes it likely that one of these guys redshirts and it can't be Ellingson.

I think there is a good chance that a player or two transfers from the new guys. Not because they do not like Iowa or Fran but strickly lack of PT. That's ok and why you keep recruiting and bringing in guys. Let them battle it out for PT.

There's no way everyone is gonna play as much as they want and I hate to say it nor should they. Hopefully the better players emerge and get the majority of playing time. That's kinda the idea of it anyway, just because a guy gets a scholarship doesn't translate into guaranteed playing time. It's a tough world out there and isn't always fair.
