I forgot how AWFUL Illinois fans are

What the hell? Not saying they don’t suck but a recent example that precipitated your post would help.

Bro, I respect the Hawks and have no reason to try to drag ‘em down. It’d be dumb to try to pretend like it’s “hard to root for” the #5 team in the country, and it’s just as silly to suggest it about the #4 team.

I'm a B10 loyalist and I'll root for all of them in the tourney, at least until the point we have to square off with one another in the brackets.

Illinois fans just suck in general. They’re still made about some Blazer thing that happened back in the day.
HIC -trust me I know I grew up there. I was just wondering if something happened recently for the OP was all. I was in high school/college for the Deon Thomas/Bruce Pearl Blazer deal.

My god, it's redbird. I thought you were dead buddy.

I think he was probably talking about the overall athletic dept, the recent bball success has been an outlier. It's kinda like old Iowa st when their football was so bad they freaked out over any basketball success which is clearly annoying to hawk fans. That said, current illini basketball is very worthy of respect and maybe the fans not being there helps with that

The Eric Gordon body check during pregame and the harassment of his parents kinda sums up illini fans to me, that was straight garbage. Get a White Sox fan vibe from them, wouldn't be surprised if a ref got assaulted by meth'd out illini fan (and father) at some point

^ Illini sports is doing QUITE well right now, with several teams ranked. Football is, as per usual, a big outlier, though. I’m confident BB can get them at least out of doormat status within a few years.

As for your next part, this is a common line among Iowa fans specifically, so I don’t see it as an argument worth having.

Razorback fans thought the same thing.

Won't ever forget the Illini fan yelling "**** Iowa" in CHA with about 10 seconds left in the national anthem back in 2005.

Easily, the most full of themselves fan base I have ever been around.

I will say Illinois fans are a unique variety. When I was at the University of Iowa, 90% of my friends were from Chicagoland. None of them grew up caring about college sports since they had so many awesome pro teams to follow. This was 2002-2006 so they grew up with His Airness Michael Jordan. Only a handful of them grew up paying any attention to Illinois sports and they were quick to convert to Hawkeyes allegiance once they started school there. Basically said you only give two s**** about Illinois sports if you went to school there. I can respect that, seriously. Now if you are an Illinois fan and YOU DIDN’T GO THERE? You’re likely an awkward human being.

I am, and my Hawk friends don’t think of me that way, my man. :)

Also, could it POSSIBLY be that your Illinoisan Hawkeye friends might not be the most unbiased sample size? Lol. Surely, you’ve heard the stereotype about Illinois kids going to Iowa. You’re the only fan base in the B1G that feels the intense desire to delegitimize the Illini in every way. It’s like your whole identity as a fan base depends on tearing down Illinois. Champaign has to be “a dump,” even though national publications constantly rank it as a top ten college town. “No one in Illinois cares about the Illini,” even though our attendance is great and we regularly draw huge crowds in Chicago when we’re good. We have to be “thugs” for being chippy during an intense game, while someone like Conner McCaffrey is a fierce competitor for doing the same stuff?

Our fans are so annoying about it, too, and I think it’s BS from both sides. Pathetic, kind of. Both programs are good. Both college towns and schools are GREAT. Both fan bases are extremely passionate. A healthy rivalry - even one full of bad blood - can involve respect. And there should be A LOT more mutual respect here, from both sides.

There are a lot of pretty awful Hawk fans too, I guess they’re everywhere, especially those who turn against their own team right after a loss and a couple of beers. 😂🤬

I don't know the context of this complaint. We have a loud, passionate fanbase that will talk a lot of smack but I'd say that applies to most passionate fanbases.

I know there's going to be a lot of "ayo should be a lock for POTY" type stuff now.

I think Illinois has a fair gripe about Michigan "winning the conference" because they want by % but it is what it is.

Michigan isn't going to be like "hey you know what I think Illinois does have a fair gripe" and give us permission to be cochamps.

Personally I get tired of the constant sucking off of everything that is Michigan/Msu/Ohio from the media but it is what it is.

How do you really feel? :)

Michigan had a better year and it’s really not debatable. You beat them. Cool. That doesn’t make you champs. Beat Rutgers and Maryland and maybe you have a case
