I musjudged this team

Lots of people after last week

Last week we didn't even look good though. We couldn't move the ball. The people thinking that game was a sign of a championship caliber team were blinded by whatever expectations they had ahead of time.

Those are the fans that are most disappointed are the ones who expected an undefeated season so couldn't objectively see the team as they were performing game in and game out.

I don't know, I'm a hypocrite because I'm telling people to chill out on a messageboard when I'm sitting here wasting time on a negative messageboard that isn't adding enjoyment to my life. I'm stepping away for the night. In a few days legitimate threads with objectivity start to pop up that are based on head and not emotion.

Stanley seems to have no ability to recognize pressure and step up or escape. His relative immobility is difficult to watch.

Stanley had a half a dozen good escapes to extend plays. He is not going to get away every time when the pocket is being squeezed like it was at times today. Sparty's defensive front was more physical.

It's over before it really got going. Already no chance at the West.

Wait a minute. Last week I said Iowa and PSU weren’t going to be playing a rematch. You scolded me saying I couldn’t know that. But now you know it? You owe me an apology.

We look like a 3-2 team so far, which is where many of us thought we would be at this point. If our offense can improve and sustain drives, we could very good. We are playing a lot of young pieces in the passing game.

I knew we were bad during the ISU game. That was 2 bad teams going at it in Ames!

We're probably going to be mid-tier this year, especially with a first-year Young quarterback who's still learning the ropes. Stanley's going to have great games that he's going to have mediocre games because of his inexperience. The offensive line is not what it was but then again we have injuries and the line hasn't come together . The defense is good but they've been asked to stay on the field so much because of lack of offensive consistency This team will get better as the season goes on, but they're still going to have some Growing Pains. Hopefully they can work them out and make a bowl game because I think they're probably out of the race now.

when I look at this team Iowa has a
OC in BF that was a OL Coach and is doing On The Job Training
There is a new OL Coach that has had to rebuild the OL
this is was supposed to be this
LT RSSR Myer
LG JR Render
C JR Daniels
RG RSSR Welsh
RT RSSR Boettger
now it has turned into this
LT RSFR Jackson
LG RSSR Myer who jus came back from a injury
C JR Daniels
RG JR Render
RT RSSR Welsh a 6'3 285 lb guard playing out of position
that is a big adjustment for a 1st OL Coach to deal with
then there is the new WR Coach that is trying to break in these as receivers,
RSFR TE Hochenson
SO TE Fant
JR JUCO Transfer Easily who didn't arrive on campus till January
FR WR Brandon Smith who caught his 1st pass
FR WR Smith-Marsette
not are the young but everybody on offense started with a new playbook in March and the FR didn't get it till June.
Right now these are the backups at RB, RSFR Young, FR Martin-Manley yes they looked good vs NT but they are no where near as good as PSU who by the way is ranked #4 in the country.

going into day KF was 8-8 vs MSU and most of those were won or lost by 7 points or less and the overall series was led by Iowa by 2 games

the defense held MSU to 300 total yards with 88 coming on the ground, I wish Iowa had started the BT Season with Rutgers and Illinois like Nebraska did to make all you negative nellies happy.

Illinois is up next then the bye week then they go to NW then Minnesota and all 3 are winnable as none of them have the quality of defense as PSU or MSU did.

Cmon Scothawk, you know that they don't want to hear your ray of sunshine, until they've had a few days to vent right? No one wants to hear that the last 2 full games we've started about 80% of our drives inside our own 10 yard line, several inside the five, and thus eliminated about 80 % of the playbook with a young QB. They don't want to hear that our defense has played their ASSES off holding the scores down ion these last two games when both PSU and MSU started most of their drives inside Iowa territory. Its amazing actually that we didn't give up 40 some points in both those games instead of a combined 38 points.

No we aren't. It hurts to admit it but we have glaring weaknesses.
We do, but I think he was talking about in general, and not just this season. Most teams, not in the upper tier have weaknesses......You have to admit its amazing that in 7 days we went from playing #4 PSU, (who looked every bit a top 5 team today), into a last play classic game to so many fans wanting the whole thing thrown on the scrap heap again. This has to be either the most bipolar fanbase, or the one with the least perspective in college football.

I has a hunch in the offseason the team was sneaky good, and the early play, I thought, confirmed that. It's actually taken this much into the season to change it, no snap judgments, here.

See above. This is not a snap judgment. Defense looked great against Wyoming, but Wyoming has turned out to be terrible. Thought we gutted out a tough win against a salty ISU team, but ISU is ISUing (again). A terrible NT team gave us way too much trouble. PSU had 600 yards of offense. D had a season-high effort to hold the points down and O wasn't anywhere near good enough to capitalize. Now an average MSU team is punking us.

It's not an instant reaction or giving up early. Enough season has happened that my early optimism is gone. My eyes tell me this team isn't as good as I thought. What I thought was 9-3 an a surprise run at the West. At this point, it's fair to say we're very up and down and will do well to make a bowl.

I was one of the posters that posted a prediction of 6-6 and maybe 7-5. I actually predicted an ISU loss and was surprised we pulled it out. There's so much overrating the players we have as 'talented'. We have some good players but it's intermixed with other guys that have no business playing in the B1G. The OL has been garbage for a while ... just lucky we have had backs like Wadley that can make people miss and take it to the house on a little crease. That has padded the stats masking poor line play.

Glad you removed your black and gold glasses finally.

Shame on you for believing BF would instantly be the offensive genius you thought Iowa never had.

This is a 7-5 or 6-6 team.
I didn't say that about BF. I did think he'd shake things up a bit with using the two backs in a variety of ways, showing different looks, breaking some tendencies, throwing over the middle and downfield more often. And he did those things, early in the year. Now, I'm not an expert so maybe the only difference is execution. I'll differ to those who can analyize the game better. But the playcalling doesn't look the same to me.

Wait a minute. Last week I said Iowa and PSU weren’t going to be playing a rematch. You scolded me saying I couldn’t know that. But now you know it? You owe me an apology.
Yeah. Because now more games have been played.I don't owe you anything.

Just like there are complainers every year. There's a good ying and yang to it I guess......
Wouldn't excuses and complainers make more of a yin and yin?

You made too much out of too little information.

Hawks are fine. Not terrible. Not great either. Very inconsistent.

Right now they look a lot like the 7-5 team that many objective observers had them picked at.

It's understandable. Fans want to see things that aren't always there. And they often downplay what the other teams on the schedule bring to the table.
Sooo...7-5 is fine? Just didn't know that was ok or expected.

Didn't want to create another thread about this, but anyone else notice how trend-breaking Iowa is?

Going into the PoSU game, all the talk was about Iowa's ball control offense vs their quick strike? What happened? They hold the ball for like 45 minutes. MSU was giving the ball away all year like it was going out of style, while after the first game we've protected it well. What happened? 0-2 in the turnover line and both cost us points.

Playing Iowa is sure good for what ails ya!

Yeah. Because now more games have been played.I don't owe you anything.

Maybe you’re just a slow reader when it comes to things football. Don’t worry, I’ll forgive your apology debt, but I’m still sending you a 1099-C.

Sounds like a friend who gave his season tickets away after the ISU loss in Kirk's first Orange bowl year. Iowa almost played for the NC that year. O$U was lucky in a few games down the stretch and a loss would have Iowa vs Miami in the NC game.

We lost to a top 5 team on the last play and a decent team on the road with a QB who has 5 career starts.

I agree with the BF comments. He seems to have a "pound a square peg in a round hole" mentality when trying to run the ball after being stopped numerous times.

I thought we had a capable defense, a QB who made good decisions and executed well, and a game breaking RB. A good mix of veterans and youth made me very positive on the season.

No longer. This defense can't pressure, cover, or tackle. Offense is as inept as last year. Continually committing stupid penalties. Brian F, once Big Ten play started, has forgotten all the good he'd done and is letting Dad dictate the playcalling. No lessons learned from last week's offensive disaster.

It's over before it really got going. Already no chance at the West. Just hope for a bowl game to get more practices, I guess, and "maybe next year" again. Sigh.

I was suprised too. Thought it would be an Iowa win by 10-14. Still, Iowa is looking like the 2nd best team in the west,

all you had to do is really watch the north tx and isu game and look at the stats and the outcomes . Wyoming game was not much of a future teller. those other two games said a lot. then with penn st, it was all over. penn st killed iowa in the stats.

If you watched that game and honestly had the perception that we were adjusting to the game style/flow your glasses need adjusting. Love the post that well we passed first possession.. who cares, we are the most predictable team in college football after that series.

We continue to make excuses for why this program is where it is, a mid tier program, with a top tier paid coach.

I'm no coach but as a fan base we deserve more from a program with the continuity we have had. Tired if saying next year

I'd say Iowa is a mid tier Big 10 team. The Big 10 is above average for FBS, so I'd say we're above mid tier overall. It just depends on what peope mean by "mid tier" I guess.
if you go by recent bowl outcomes, holy crap, iowa may look like bottom tier

Sooo...7-5 is fine? Just didn't know that was ok or expected.
Actually 7 wins is the magic number in kirks contract that will give him an extension and more guaranteed $ if he wins 7/yr through 2020 if i recall. Barta's benchmark, perfectly suited for this mediocre program.

When opposing defenses of good teams have NO fear of the QB burning them, it is going to be very difficult to consistently run the ball. Our offensive line is not close to being good enough to open holes against defenses where the LBs and even a safety have no respect for our ability to throw over them.

Although I do feel your frustration, losing sucks! Lets keep things in perspective- We lost on the very last play to what seems to be a national championship contending team and lost by 7 on the road at a place that is always pretty difficult to play- with 2 costly fumbles and a punter who looked awful. If you truly thought we would be 6-0 at this point, that is kind of your fault. Granted I thought we would be 5-1, but we could easily be 6-0 and also 3-3...so it is what it is. I thought it would be about 8-4 season with a new QB, new staff, new WR's and with what should have been a strength of the team in our OL now is becoming a problem with both starting senior OT's being injured. I mean with how we have played we could easily end up 10-2 (or 6-6) because its not like we lost to 2 MAC teams- the teams we lost too are pretty good.

Iowa made way too many mistakes but still could have won ... small margin for error (per usual). I'm still on board with 8-4, 7-5 type of season. The punting has to get better though ... 25-30 yard punts in the air aren't going to cut it. The OL has to get better too ... I think after the BYE we'll see a better team.

I had us at 4-1 at this point. The biggest deal is being 0-2 in conference. Too big of a hole to come back and win the West.
Especially with Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Nebraska looming. Throw in a Purdue after a Wisky, Buckeye beat down and it could be bad.
