I think any serious observer of Iowa Basketball today...

This, the 3 seniors were atrocious but come on Fran. Grow a pair and adjust in game, sit them and get fire in there. Iowa's best football/basketball teams have lacked in game coaching to take it a step up.

Illinois was hot and seniors (aside from JU) were AWFUL!! You prepare four years for a moment like that and they were AWWWWFUL!!

I have said this for a while now. Two collapsed seasons. Team gets worse, not better. Offense not coordinated at season end. Breakdowns on D. Weak rebounding against a short team. Terrible end of game coaching. All this will hurt his reputation at recruiting time.

Did you miss the decade before he came. Fran is a good coach. He's not the one out of the floor choking in last few minutes missing shots and turning the ball over.

Yes, I agree. Fran is a good coach. He has brought Iowa Basketball back to good after a near death experience. But are you telling me today that you think Fran has the ability to take the program beyond good and into the land of Champions, or at least contenders...in March, not January?

...would be forced to conclude that Fran doesn't have the coaching skills that enable his teams to close out a game, or a season.

I like the man, but jeez...there is no denying the facts.
I somewhat agree but I'm wondering what will happen when Mike and Anthony leave. Those 2 have proven to collapse under pressure. Nice players, nice guys, no balls whatsoever. It has reflected on Fran for 4 years.

Some Iowa fans sound like President Obama continually blaming everything on former President Bush. Iowa fans need to stop pointing to the Lickliter era is dead and gone and Fran owns this team and its success and failures.

All I'm saying is people as usual freaking out over reacting after the loss. Fran is a good coach. Can he take them that far who knows? maybe, maybe not. But least think he has the potential to. When is the last time Iowa has had a coach who took them deep into the tourney or won a conference title? Dr Tom 11-0 in first rd games but only made sweet 16 3x and deepest run with Raveling's guys. Same thing people bitched about was Dr Tom couldn't take us deep enough in March or win a conf title and looked what happened after we got rid of him...

You're right he's not out there playing.BUT it is HIS responsibilty to make sure his players are mentally ready each and every game, and I don't think he does that.
Here's a question... Has he possibly over coache'd them? Meaning, coming February and March, what has to be said that hasn't been engraved the previous 3 months or even year? Could they be grinding too much?

I honestly think that's too early. I know I get killed for posting this today because of all the emotion. I have doubts about Fran but it's a recruiting game and Fran is building that up. I see progression in the type of players he's starting to get. Replace a scoring guard for Clemmons or Gesell and this team is right there without a doubt. They need a 3rd scorer and Clemmons and Gesell aren't it. Has Fran done a horrible job playing Gesell and Clemmons? Absolutely and I'm his harshest critic on that but Fran's had a lot of success here and is building success. I know it's hard to see right now but the evidence is there. If they flake out and lose in the first round of the NCAA tournament then his seat will get hotter. I just have to wonder if this team will be better because of additions by subtractions next year. I'm not the biggest Gesell and Clemmons fan. Is it concerning that Fran just plays them together and really has no leash for them? Yes.

This is what, his 6th year? I think most Iowa fans would accept a Sweet16 berth as a successful season...when do you think we are going to get that?

It's recruiting. Gesell and Clemmons would be reserves anywhere else in the big ten except maybe PSU. Here they start, never get pushed by incoming recruits and get showered with praise for being invisible.

Record under Fran in games decided by 5 or fewer points
2010/11: 2-7
2011/12: 4-3 (only year with winning record in such games)
2012/13: 2-7
2013/14: 2-7
2014/15: 3-4
2015/16: 2-6
TOTAL: 15-34 (basically winning 1 out of 3 such games historically)

ABSOLUTELY the players deserve some blame for these failures. But when it happens over an extended period of time, to the degree that it has happened (as itemized above), you can really draw only one logical, reasonable conclusion...there is a coaching issue somewhere that must be corrected for this program to take the next step.

The end of this season is a virtual carbon copy of 2013/14.
  • Utterly meek ending to the season with only 1 win in the final handful of games? CHECK
  • Two star players who seem to have a pulse and everyone else comatose? CHECK
  • One and done in the BTT as a single-digit seed vs. a double-digit seed? CHECK
  • One and done in NCAA Tourney? TBD

How many times does Mike Gesell have to screw up end of half situations before a coach decides he shouldn't be in the game or have the ball in his hands in end of half situations?

Bingo!! Coaches need to adapt. Fran cannot. Ultimate meltdown of players and coach. This shit is sooooo old

Well hopefully this year but we haven't gone that far this century so not like its the norm and he is failing to meet expectations from past coaches.. Year 6 consider the mess we all know he inherited he has done a good job. Yes been disappointing how this season and 2 years ago finished. But I'm sure you'd rather move on and get a new coach. Please enlighten me with who next coach iowa should get to take us to the "next level"

Who has ever taken Iowa into the land of Champions? Iowa has exactly zero national champions and hasn't had a conference Championship other then 2 Big Ten Tournament championships since 1979. That is 37 years and you are acting like Fran has failed. You always seem to lead the charge against Iowa coaches not named Davis. It was fans like you who got Barta into a sweat over Alford. Then Barta made the error of making a public ultimatum in an effort to show you fools that he was a tough guy and that resulted in Todd Lickliter becoming the coach. How did that work out for you? And, you even defended Lickliter. I would not give any credence to any opinion of yours regarding Iowa's coaches.

And some posters should actually look at what Fran has done here from the big picture. Not what is happening from a game to game perspective. Please describe the declining success Fran is having year to year. Obviously we've seen a decline in the success since Fran has gotten here right?
