IA Wrestle's 2015-16 Preseason Top 8 predicitions

I believe Beckman has 1 year remaining. I would assume he should be ranked at 133.

wiffed on Hendersen, but I posted the wrong 141 list which I did have Durso on there

Iowa definitely has some big guns and holes to fill for next year

125 #3
133 #2
141 - hole **Carton/Gross/Ryan/Turk
149 #2
157 - hole **Grothus/Cooper
165 - hole **Padock/Rhoads
174 #6 **with full season as starter I see him finishing top 4
184 Not top 8 due to tough draw at Nationals, see him anywhere top 6
197 #5
HWT - hole **Hopefully Stoll can have a good RS fresh year, HWT clears out quite a bit

That's 6 "surefire" AAs with some holes.... similar to this year..really need to youngsters(and Grothus) to step up

Unfortunately I don't think 6 AA's in the 2-6 range breaks the top 3 next year. Going to need at least 1 more AA and to go along with the 2 finalists, and some early round points from the other 3 to be in contention.

I think Brooks deserves to be ranked; if not for a brutal draw at Nationals, he would be ahead of Courts and few other 184 pounders.

I know it gets done a lot but I don't like ranking based on the tournament finish. That baby would end up different every time you wrestled it. The are a nummber of guys who finished as an AA above other AAs or guys who did not even AA that I would not rank higher.

Agree with you. Sammy beat Zilmer and Courts . Wrestled Dean close both times.

I have not even tried by has anyone stacked the last ranking going into nationals against actual results?
Rankings are fun but how accurate have they been this year? In years past they have been off quit a bit.
(Not the OP's because I have not done any comparison but others )

Fun stuff to look at but some guys should be moving weights.

just quick random thoughts.

~how does Brewer make 133 agin? Dude was huge.

~Boy 174 cleared out, which leads me to believe one of the 165 guys will jump to 174. Why play 2nd to Dierenger unless oyur on a vision quest. Crazy not too IMO. Either Direnger or BoJo. My guess is Bojo. He is huge. No idea how he made 165 unless his legs barely weigh anything.

~had heard Cozx would shirt this coming year and allow Miklus to 197 and Eblen to 184. We shall see. Not so sure we also dont shirt Burak. 197 would really clear out in another year.

Okie St is really going to be loaded with potentially 3 grapplers starting the season with #1 rankings.
Wouldn't surprise me if Bo Jo's younger brother starts the season ranked at 157 and Penn St will probably have redshirt freshmen ranked at 157 & 165.
Have a feeling Retheford and Mays will be ranked higher at the 141lb weight class.

Okie St, Ohio St, and Penn St look to be in the drivers seat entering next season.

I agree with most of this, and the PSU guys could be shifting .Could be interesting.

Although Eblen was a senior, so he's out for Mizzou.

141: I think Retherford is the guy to beat here
165: Wondering if we see Dieringer move up to 174 and Marsteller at 165.
184: Sammy Brooks should be top 6 in my opinion

Just my thoughts, but good job!

Re: Brooks. Notice that Abounader and Dechow did not AA this year, and they had wins over Brooks this year. If Sammy becomse more consistent, he can be top 5-6 (maybe even higher), but he'll have to earn it on the mat, of course

Retherford with three career losses as a true freshman (two to Logan Stieber, one in sudden victory to Mitchell Port) and a win just six weeks ago over Evan Henderson. ... He probably should be the top seed at 141. Unless the rumors about his growth spurt are true, in which case he would slot right behind Tsirtsis at 149.

I agree w your points. I hope Brooks mixes in more low level offensive through out his matches next year. I've got to believe this would increase his consistency dramatically. The kid looks like he's wrestle freestyle most matches. Works against lower tier wrestlers not so much against upper echelon.

Smith has stated at this point he sees Dieringer staying at 165. I'd say based on PSU chatter 75% that Retherford moves to 149.

At least 149 is a given, they are talking 157 on some other discussion board.
(Then Nolf to 165 and Hammond looking for a spot.)

Some observations: No Megaludis in ranking at 125? already mentioned above. No way is Retherford going to 157, he just wrestled at 143.5, possibly 149 but I don't think so. Nolf at 157 and Nickal at 174. Nevills at heavyweight. Possibly Shakur Rasheed at 165. These are my opinions but I think will be accurate.

All quality wrestlers, but none of them will get top 8 preseason rankings. Not even BoJo or IMar accomplished that.

Nico was a mistake on my part because I thought he already qualified for ORS so I left him out for that reason.

Hi GOLDBANGER sorry missed you at ST Louis so guess will have to wait till 2017 at St Louis.
Will not make trip to New York this old mid-west dude can't handle that.
Boy that Amalone dude is fired up so guess rest of us might as well stay home.

Good to hear from you minnhawkeye. Sorry we didn't cross paths this year and NYC is a relatively short drive for our crew so see you in 2017 I hope!! It looked like Halloween at the bars near our hotel with all the orange and black.

Don't want to wish my life away but looking forward to next season already. One of these days I need to get out to CHA.

Great read. Thanks for taking the time to put these rankings together. Looking it over, one would think PSU is in real trouble but I fully understand why some can't be placed on the season opening rankings. As for their lineup, my opinion on how it will shake out..

125-Megaludis
133-Conaway
141-Gulibon
149-Retherford
157-Nolf
165-Rasheed
174-Nickal
184-McCutcheon
197-Mcintosh
285-Nevills

Have to agree Golbanger, no way Retherford sees 157 next season. I actually think he finishes his career at 149. As for some others, I think Nolf goes 157 then the following season bumps to 165 when Joseph comes off his redshirt year and fills the 157 spot. Then I think things become interesting. If I were to guess, I then see Rasheed,Nickal and McCutcheon all bumping up a weight just as McInthosh graduates. My question would be, where would Manville fit into all this? Another guess but I'd say he will eventually be battling Rasheed for the 174 spot. After a redshirt year of course and that's if he indeed follows through with his verbal.

I take it those are the "ones" that don't know anything about College Wrestling?

I have a few thoughts:

First, I find it odd that Meyer is included in the ranks, but not Nolf, Micah Jordan, or Ryan Blees.

Collica of Oklahoma State has said on Twitter he plans on being at 149 next year, several Cowboys fans have stated that Blees beats Collica now. As crazy as it may sound considering how hyped he was, but Marsteller may not be able to make the Cowboys lineup at 157, 165, or 174. I personally still think Dieringer goes up to 174 making room for him and bumping up Crutchmer, but Coach Smith has stated Diringer plans to be a 165 next year, so we have to take him at his word right now.

Retherford isn't going 157, however he is also not going to be able to make 141. He is a title favorite at 149 and preseason should probably be slotted 2nd behind Tsirtis.

PSU lineup
125- Nico. top 3
133- Gulibon, top 5
141- Moss, a rare weak spot, maybe Beitz makes the tough cut to get in the lineup.
149- Retherford, top 3
157- Nolf, we shall see, legit AA threat tho
165- Rasheed/Hammond, Qualifier, but not AA threat just yet IMO
174- Nickal, We shall see, Legit AA threat tho
184- McCutcheon- Rd. 16 last year with just about everyone coming back, I expect about the same next year
197- McIntosh- Top 3
Hvy- Nevills, Can beat anyone, will take some lumps, but will be a low AA threat come March.

PSU is stronger with Gulibon at 133 and Moss at 141, then Conaway at 133 and Gulibon at 141 where neither would be AA's in my opinion, but would be NCAA qualifiers

Their lineup has 4 sure fire AA's and then the 4 stud Freshman. Does that lineup have more scoring potential than Iowa...I think so.

Because Meyer has two wins over two R12 guys. If you can provide me sufficient wins to put those guys in other than who they beat in their own room, let me know.

Also, plenty of PSU fans agree/understand that Nolf's win over Realbutto who was just coming back off injury isn't enough to slot him a top 8. You don't give someone a top 8 preseason ranking if they don't deserve it (I.e based off expectations). The returning AAs and R12 earned it.

Yeah, as a PSU fan I'd have to agree that you can't just throw him on there just because we believe he is top 8. Gotta prove first that you belong. The Realbutto win was nice... So was him hanging with Greene. He'll be top 5 by seasons end (just my opinion) and a ranking service or two might just put him near there right off the bat just to generate attention to their service and debate.

I hate to be the one to point this out, but Meyer also has a win over the guy ranked number 1 in these very rankings. I think Crutchner improved a lot over the course of the season, but Meyer beat him and Rogers at Lindenwood.
