If Iowa had so much NFL talent...

Do you not think Frost could have gotten more out of them?

No, I don't think that Frost could have gotten more out of Iowa's roster. I do not think that Iowa's talent fits into Frost's scheme, and vice versa. Compared to Iowa, Frost hardly uses a tight end. His offense uses spread personnel, rather than in-line TEs. There is not a QB on Iowa's roster that would fit what Frost wanted to do.

Defensively, Nebraska's 3-4 scheme is also very different than Iowa's 4-3. There are a number of Iowa players who would have been clear upgrades over Nebraska's talent at the same defensive position, even with the difference in scheme. But I do not think that they would have performed better in Frost's defensive scheme than they did for Iowa.

Defensively, I wouldn't touch Frost with a 30-ft pole. He has yet to coach even an average defense as a HC, and I doubt he would have kept PP who could coach circles around all of Frost's defensive staffs.

I don’t think Iowa schemed enough with Hock and Fant with their athletic abilities. You find ways to move them around, Hock @ fb then through the line, down and out on a clear out. Fant out wide, etc. with their athletic abilities, you gotta scheme to get them the ball or open it up for the rb backs or other receivers to take advantage of one on one or one on none opportunities.

Perfect example is the Wisconsin game where Iowa had numerous opportunities with Fant by motioning him out wide in iso then don't throw it up so he can go get it. Not sure if that’s on Nate or Brian’s play calling.

SOP under KF at Iowa. See 2009, 2010, etc.

What does this even mean? Did KF hurt Stanzi and then our linebackers in 2009 and 2010, respectively? Did he hurt Jewel Hampton and knock up Brandon Wegher’s gf?

Our starting 22 can hang with anyone under KF - it’s extremely rare that we get blown out. Depth at Iowa and similar schools is hard to build up. SOP under KF is sound schemes, smart, physical players, and the ball occasionally bouncing our way.

How did they not win the division in a down year? Do you blame coaching?
We have 5 guys who are as good as the best 5 guys at the blue bloods. The rest of the team is filled out by walk-ons and 2-star kids with limited athleticism, but who work their tails off to be Big Ten players. That difference in athleticism is the reason Iowa challenges for the Big Ten title once every 8 years or so and Ohio State is there every year.

Speaking of NFL talent. I saw a pretty impressive stat put up by a former Nebraska standout.

"In four years in the league, (Randy) Gregory has been suspended for more games (30) than he's played (28)." He's now suspended indefinitely.

Do you think Frost could have kept him from being suspended like Osborne could have?

I don’t think the receivers held Iowa back last year. Easley, Smith-Marsette, and Smith are a solid WR corps. Iowa struggled to get the ball to them on a consistent basis.

The inability to establish a run game was the greater issue imo

Because Iowa operates in a box offensively against NW and WI and they know how to shut it down vs Iowa. Add in Iowa kept trying to run vs NW when they should of been passing due to the depleted secondary of NW. Iowa needs to scheme vs an opponents game time weakness instead of line up and play Iowa football where we will out execute you. That doesn’t work vs Patty Fitz and Paul, plays right into their hands.

Wisconsin - turnovers / special teams

Purdue -- defense could not hold

Northwestern -- back to back fumbles at end of game when driving

Penn State -- NS just plain crapped the bed after about midway through 2nd quarter.

And our run game was broke. Something was off and never really got going most of season.

And we did beat Miss State who also has guys in round 1.

Bad run blocking OL corners and linebackers were liabilities

I wish there was someone out there in the universe and has watched the film from the season and diagnosed run game problem. To me it seemed like a combo of a bunch of stuff, but one thing was for sure the loss of Wadley was a huge deal.

Maybe but both Toren and Mekhi averaged more ypc than Akrum did his senior year

He said his boys were not as big and strong as the Hawks and that he couldn't believe he was saying that. I was listening on way home from the game. He said it.

He couldn't even get his guys to lift weights and get stronger evidently. He said so pretty much at end of last season.

He never said “He couldn’t get his guys to lift weights and get stronger”

He said he couldn’t believe how much bigger and stronger other teams were compared to Nebraska and that was going to change moving forward.

That happened under the Riley administration...

He did say someone close to this, but not that he couldn't get his guys to lift weight and get stronger. He's also said he was shocked how far behind they were with strength development when he got to Nebraska.

He recently said this...
