If Trump loses, who runs for the GOP in 2028?

Does Trump run yet again? If so, how much does the outcome of all of his criminal cases matter?

If Trump loses, but decides to run again in 2028, will he face opposition in the primaries? If so, who would be the candidates running against him?

If Trump loses and decides not to run again, but it's relatively close in the swing states, would Vance run in 2028?

What are the chances we see a Vance v Walz race for POTUS in 2028? I'd think that chance would be extremely small.

If Trump loses, I think the powers that be will kick him to the curb. What would be interesting though is if he wanted to run third party and completely tank the GOP in ‘28.

Aside from that, the postmortem will say something to the effect that they’re gaining in minorities but losing women and college educated voters at an alarming rate. Losing those two demographics is terrible for the future because they are high-propensity voters.

The GOP will come to a fork in the road and decide if they want to try to recapture suburban woman and educated voters with someone like Nikki Haley or Marco Rubio or if they’re going full on bro with someone like Vivek or Vance.

My money is on the latter. I think they’ll continue to lean into the macho culture wars and isolationism/anti-immigrant policy.

IMO, this is the final round for Trump.
He is already too old, another 4 years will not help.

Haley and Desantis seem the most likely.
Honestly I feel like DeSantis’ time is past too. He shot his shot when he thought Trump was at his weakest but otherwise, he’s just a pretty unlikable dude. By 2028, he won’t be able to lean on stuff like keeping Florida open during Covid.

The party could get the same package in a younger form with Vance.

Same. It has become the foundation of their party. I don’t know how they pivot away without conceding the presidency and many swing districts for a decade or more. And if a Trump-lite like Vance steps up…whatever is left of the moderate GOP is toast.

Fair assessment, I could see Vance being in the mix as well.
Overall, DeSantis has been effective running FL and the state has gone more red with him in office. That is why I think he'll be in the mix. He may bow out again (or not run) and wait for an opportunity to be a VP candidate.

I can see a ton of candidates running. The real question is, who will the MAGA cult follow? Which candidate will sink to his/their level?

When Trump finally dies, this is the interesting question. Trumpism unearthed a really, really ugly American. One that was better left in their cave. Amazingly (and unfortunately) they’re not crawling back in and it looks like they’re here to stay if you play to their ugliness just right. The republicans have sold their souls and latched on to them because they can actually move the needle. Whomever takes the baton from a dead Trump will likely have to lower themselves to appeal to this ugly American. Because if they don’t, someone will.

FWIW, I see it similarly. Sitting in the room at the Rep primary this past January there was, to me, a stark difference between those that were supporting any and all of the other R candidates v. the Trump supporters. Unfortunately, there were enough Trump diehards present to win the most votes in that splintered room, that night. I kind of think that they would show out again for Trump if he was on the ballot in 2028, even after falling in '20 and '24.

It was with this memory in mind that I cringed the other day when I saw an enthusiastic Elon Musk on the stage with Trump recently. My thoughts..."Great, that's what we need...another goofy celebrity with delusions of grandeur on the national stage..." potentially running for POTUS in the future.

Just one person's thought(s), but I am concerned that we have moved past a place where our political processes are producing high quality candidates for POTUS.

The Constitution would have to be changed before eloon could run.

Naturalized citizen, so he isn't eligible.

Vance, Youngkin and Desantis will be in the mix for sure.

If he's still alive, trump. He's your whole party, man. There is no one else
I don't know, man. I could see one of his dipshit sons start to move into the spotlight a bit and see how it goes. Test the waters so to speak.

Do I think one would actually run? I don't really think so. But I also didn't think Trump would still be dominating that party in 2024. Being a stupid asshole and having the last name Trump is good enough w/ the MAGA base to immediately be the favorite over others in the party.

We're living in a weird time right now.

Don't know, don't care. We'll see if the RINOs and MAGAts battle it out for it.
There are no Rhinos left with any power in the Grand Old Politburo. They shall forever be known as the RepublicansWithoutAParty or RWAPS.

They'll have to put up a fight to get the Republican name back. If they don't, they may as well set up a new party.

The scary thing is that someone just as evil as Trump but far more clever could easily get those mouth breathers to vote for them. There could be an actual American Hitler in office, not just the pale, idiotic shadow that is Donald Trump.

#1 Absolutely, and not at all

#2 Yes, but probably nothing significant. This past primary proved that a plurality of primary voters will vote for Trump in the primary no matter what, and I don't see anyone wasting their time and embarrassment. I think there is like a 20% chance that there's a coalition to offer someone like Tim Scott as an alternative, but the only chance is to literally set up only a single primary opponent, and the Republicans of proven incapable to doing that. That said, a loss to Kamala is a loss to pretty convincingly the worst candidate (beside Trump) that a major party has put forth in what, 100 years at least? She's terrible, which reflects on someone who can manage to lose to someone that bad. Is the party capable of standing up an alternative to a two time loser? Probably not but maybe.

#3 Yes Vance would run in that scenario, but he would have to have a unbelievable four years rehabilitating himself. He's a smart guy that had a more sustainable path to political life than throwing in with Trump. I think he's burned, especially if they lose again. Nobody really likes this guy.

#4 0.0%. Both guys suck. Neither has moved the needle at all. Waltz is some kind of weirdo caricature that is insulting at best. He was added to be the "football man's man" to the Democrats and it couldn't be a bigger fail. He's corny as shit. He's not the guy you admired in college for being manly and salt of the earth, he's the guy that insinuated himself into every girl's friend circle and talked shit about their boyfriends and hoped maybe he'd get a little kiss if one of them got really drunk one night. Vance is a mostly unlikable guy who feels like a walking opportunistic lie. He will forever be tied to the pet eating story and espousing essentially anti-Republican economic values, and just being generally unlikable. There's like a 3.7% chance, because he is smart and young and can occasionally communicate, that there is some path to totally rehabilitating himself and redefining himself, like with a radio show or TV show maybe, but I think he's burned it all.

I would watch Ivanka instead. Say what you want, but she's much smarter than the boys, has better political sense, and Kushner is no moron.

If they continue to lay low, and Ivanka works on her game, I could absolutely see her emerge as a moderate Republican, without Trump's worst characteristics. She could be a very formidable moderate populist Republican and tough to get around.

Just have to see how she works back into the arena a bit. She would be best off waiting like two cycles I think.

That's also a definite possibility. She is MUCH smarter and sharper than the boys. But then you'd have to wonder if she saw what happened w/ her dad and try to avoid that happening with her and Jared. Once you're in that POTUS race spotlight, most of the dirty things that have only been discussed behind closed doors come to light. Trump could have coasted through life being a rich old white dude, but now he's got more legal issues than damn near anyone in the country.

You're looking at the wrong thing. Ivanka had no shot. To be elected now as a republican, you need the base. Trump can get the base becuae he's Trump. Can Don, Ivanka, or Eric continue to hold it? Are they charismatic as Trump? If they can, can they hold it for another four years? I think of Trump goes, MAGA base will dwindle.

Ivanka is probably the best out of the three. Too bad she has lady bits.

The bolded part is why in my initial post I said that I could see one of them stepping into the spotlight a bit more and testing it out. Basically seeing what kind of reception they would get from the MAGA base before doing anything else or actually doing a full dive into politics.

Was it just the red hats or something else?
Multiple things in my mind...the apparel, shall we say...costumes. The zeal to speak on his behalf and the joy to be able to vote for him. I mean these people weren't just there to support their guy, they were ALL IN. Various statements made out loud to the effect that indicated a serious sentiment that they thought he was going to fix and solve everything.

I have been in Pentecostal churches that weren't half as energized as the true Trumpers. :) :)
