If you could franchise one restaurant

I am thinking about opening the Hayden Fry Steakhouse in Iowa City. It will feature Texas sized portions big enough to share and Prime beefsteaks and chops along with whole roasted Free Range chickens. Alls I have to do is get Hayden to endorse this deal for a small price, get my business plan together, hit up the bank, find a location and wham, instant success. I expect the money to come rolling in. The waitresses will be dressed in cute outfits and the featured desert is apple dumplin's. I am counting the money already. This will be a high end steakhouse but dress will be casual. Reservations recommended. Don't worry for you Veggie teranians we have fresh salads and plenty of veggie sides. Might even have some seafood but that is not for sure yet.

Old Chicago in west St. Louis. Because it's one of the few chains I like and have good happy hour/late night deals and there isn't one where I'm moving.

I'd put a Lou Malnatis in Davenport.

People here love them some big heaping food - and there is virtually nowhere in the QCA to get decent deep dish. I think it would be a huge success. I'd put it on the site of the former Ruby Tuesday near the Cinemas on 53rd. Caching!

Antonella's deep dish is fantastic and cheap.

And torbee doesn't agree, but Alfano's pizza...thin or Chicago style, is fantastic. Best pizza in the QC, imo. I do like Antonella's Sicilian pan...I haven't had the stuffed.

Twin peaks or hooters in ic because I like scantily clad college girls. But seriously I kind of like the family style Italian place that has cardboard figures of Danny devito up

A Culver's. Supposedly there is one going in on Clark just south of Wrigley Field in the old Chase Bank branch. Where would I put one? Is there one in Ankeny? That would work. Davenport.

A nice greasy pepperoni from Frank's destroys Alfano's

There is Culver's in SW Florida now. I just finished a 9 day shoot at the Red Sox spring training facility(subtle brag..lol)......and hit up Culver's in Ft Myers three times.

Culver's is so greasy...It was fun to go on occasion a few years back but I haven't been back there in awhile. They do keep their facilities clean, much like Chick-Fil-A

5 Guys is ok I guess..nothing too special

I used to like 5 guys......haven't eaten at one in probably 2-3 years. Only ate at Culver's because of the connection to home and hadn't eaten at one in ages. Wasn't too greasy. Place was very clean.

There are already four of them here. I'd assume Ankeny has one too. The Iowa market is probably completely saturated with Culvers.

Fred, The Quarter Barrel is opening on 2nd Ave in late June and will brew their own beer, have a decent menu, and sounds like they are going to have a lot of games. Barcade's are the big thing now and CR could use something to draw people downtown. Of course it won't be like D&B, but it looks like it will be pretty nice.
I see Davenport is getting a barcade this year as well. They're a great idea imo and I'm going to guess that both the CR and QC ones will do well.

If you could franchise one restaurant: which would you choose and where would you put it? And why?

5 Guys would do very, very well in the Ped Mall. But they continue to snub Iowa while flourishing in just about every neighboring state.

Legend has it that there used to be a 5 Guys restaurant in Clive that was open for--I think--approximately 15 minutes before going under. If that's what is scaring franchisees away from Iowa, I can certainly see their point--the Clive market is highly indicative of how well the same restaurant would do in a Big Ten college town like Iowa City.

Jack Stack - anywhere in Iowa. Fantastic KC barbecue in a semi-formal restraunt. I live in DSM a and am shocked at the lack of good BBQ. Jethros was fun, but food was ok at best. Smoky D's also seems to be a victim of their success (or maybe I just had a bad visit)

Zoeys - I've lived in CR, IC, DSM, KC and Fort Collins CO....... It's increddible how hard it is to find even good pizza - forget great. Not a franchise but whatever - huge hole in the market

Two:

Wings Ect...blows BW3 out of the water
Cookout...best fast food I have ever witnessed and priced right. Those from the south know what I am saying.

I don't know how well it would do anywhere but maybe West Des Moines and Iowa City but Jamba Juice was always packed in SF/Oak I would have a shot of wheat grass every day and never get sick. It has low overhead as well. Also I don't see any hot dog places around Iowa. SF had a Whats up Dog in the Financial District and that place killed it, and they were only open from 11-2 every day.

They have hot dog places in Sioux City.

Whiteys anywhere in the 515. The DQ out in Waukee has a line of 6-8 cars at any given time and it sucks. 10 years ago the wife said "we should put a DQ in out here"... When she's right, she's right. That place has to be printing their own money.

In and Out Burger, somewhere near Osage Beach Parkway and MM in the Ozarks.

This would kill at this location.

In the alternative, I'd put in a Meatball Shop. Best part of my NYC conferences other than Coolicho's or Bleeker Street Pizza.

Cracker Barrel. They are all corporately owned and operated so there is no franchising opportunities. However if they did allow for franchising, I would pick one up in a minute and place it at any exit along I-24 in central Tennessee.
