In 14 + seasons of Fran ball

If the 4 wins were all in a single season, it would be very good. 3 in a season? Good. If even 2 were in a single season it would be ok.

Making it to the round of 32 4 times in 14 years is one of those "it could be worse" kind of accomplishments.

Bottom line: If your program doesn't have an established history of tourney success, it's hard to fire a guy that keeps getting you in.

....and so here we are.....
Same with football.

"He gets them to a bowl game every year, so that's the best we can expect or hope for."

I'm a terrible fan, I guess, but I would like to see more out of both, at least from time to time.

I'd like to care about the NCAA Tournament past the second round, if even that much, some seasons as well as give any kind of shit about the playoffs on the football side.

How many upsets of top ten teams have we gotten under Fran? Or more fairly top 15

I'm not against Iowa hiring a black coach, or a coach that doesn't feel like he has to recruit most of his players exclusively from Iowa, but please hire a coach that has a plan and the expertise to make Iowa a player in the Big Ten and just not a door mat or an after thought, and get fans energized and FILL CARVER ONCE AGAIN FOR IOWA MEN'S BASKETBALL.
Really saying something there

I have been mostly a pro-Fran supporter, but the game against Wisky has me at an all-time low in my opinion of Fran and his coaching staff. I honestly believe the team would have performed a lot better if Iowa had no coaches on the sideline. I just watched his interview about Wisky/Nebraska, and other than giving Drew credit for earning his expanded role, the interview was a giant non-response. Telling us what opponents run, and then saying "we need to do a better job" says nothing about making the defense better. Traore hasn't been very good since his return, but if Payton continues to chuck up off-balance, low-percentage shots, I would pull him pretty quickly for Traore, who could help on the defensive end and make more shots available for our other scorers (with Payton not chucking a shot almost every time he touches the ball). The mass substitution rotation is a big mistake IMO. I think we need to try to keep 2 of our starting 3 guards on the court to maintain a flow, and our perimeter defense. Something needs to change on the defensive end and defensive boards. Opponents regularly getting wide open 3s or shots at the basket tells me exactly what the Wisky players said after the game. I still think this team has the potential to make some noise, but it ain't happening with the defense we played at Wisconsin.

Iowa needs to go completely 360 away from the coaches they’ve hired lately. It does have to do with being able to recruit better athletes. If clown U can get guys In there Iowa should be able to .

This. I like living in Ames, but compared to Iowa City it is not even close. Too many white trash dudes with truck nuts hanging off of their F-150. Iowa City is much more appealing despite the kids that all say they are from Chicago when in fact they grew up in a suburb 25 miles away

Damn lucky to beat Temple too.

Gesell Airball on last possession shot...only to end up in Woodbury's hands...Classic Iowa.

Then that same Iowa team Run out of gym in 1st 5 minutes by Villanova which was NCAA winner.

I'm getting to the point in my Iowa Fan career where I'd take some moral victories and Just like to be able to hang with one
of these great teams we face in NCAA tourney and say the Hawks left it all on the court. You have to be able to play good
defense to hang with Elite teams. Fran's teams don't.

I remember the Iowa team from 1980 that Ronnie Lester carried to Final-4. THe greatest B-ball I've ever seen. The 1987 Team was even better, and the blew a chance at National title. The entire state of Iowa loved Iowa Basketball.

Fast forward to Alford/Lickliter/Fran...... Fran is best of the bunch, but he's not really much better in W/L than Alford.

During Alford I took off a day from work, and came home to watch the Alford coached team play Cincinnati....I was pumped up for that game, and it was over in 5 minutes.

I went to see Frans' 2nd year team play Oregon in NIT...was so pumped...Iowa won the 1st half..... Next year in NIT, Fran had Iowa in there with up and coming Virginia and Baylor...... So over two years , Iowa, Oregon, Baylor, Virginia were all at about the same starting levels with new coaching hires. Oregon has since gone on to Final4. Baylor and Viginia have since won National Titles. Fran hasn't even managed to win 2 games in a row in NCAA tourney.

You went to the NIT game in Eugene vs Oregon?

Let’s not get carried away with “same starting levels” as Oregon and Baylor. Oregon had an Elite 8 appearance within five years of playing Iowa in the NIT. Coupled that with Nike money is not exactly a fair comparison by any reasonable stretch. Baylor had Elite 8 appearances two out of the three seasons (2010 and 2012) before playing Iowa in the NIT. Scott Drew was in his 10th season as head coach of Baylor. Insane to include Baylor as a same starting level as Iowa. Virginia is about the only real comparison to Iowa at the time and they’re all in on basketball, which definitely can’t be said about Iowa.

I must agree, at least in terms of strength of opponent.

Also, I fell into the trap of euphoria from seeing a few of the national pundits pick Iowa to get to the Elite8 and even the Final4 after they rolled through the BTT. (Jay Bilas, even!)

Watching Iowa lay the biggest egg in that game was just completely soul-crushing and the last time I put any real faith and belief in a Fran McCaffery-led team.
Was Richmond the game where some people blamed the brand of basketball being used for the game?

I don't know where if that is where it started, but yeah, that was definitely one of them.

(and because I was so pissed at everything, I blamed the ball too - at the time)

Yes, first year of Wilson EVO NXT. Shooting percentages were down the whole tournament. It's not a terrible ball, but it grips different and flies different than Evolutions. Fran's problem is that they did not practice with that ball or get used to it all week before the game, hence Bohannon and Murray shooting like crap. A lot of teams didn't.

The only time we've played with it this year was vs Utah State.
