In 40 years of cheering for the Hawks...

Do any of the other Ferentz boys coach basketball? Just a thought.

Is there any other school in America that has more family ties woven through every athletic program? We’ve one upped other schools with the one positive situation where we have twins.

Way too hard to watch an all white team of mostly role players try to compete in a black man's game.

Even if this team ends up on the bubble come March (Hahahahaha), who the hell can stomach watching such limited ability? I've been watching DePaul on and off for 15 years and I can't think of a single game where they looked better than against these scrubs.

At least we have 8-4 Iowa football!

Sorry to say but every team has a game like this but usually not every player on the team. We are lazy with our passes, Garza needs to throw it back out when he has no shot underneath, Joe T could really help but needs to play a little more under control, need stronger hands. Let's give them another game or two to see what we really have.

This might have been the fastest Iowa Basketball game I've ever watched. Forgot they were playing, then noticed the DVR was recording and game about over.

Settled in to watch the entire game, and when Iowa turned it over on the majority of their possessions without even getting a shot, and DePaul was making all of theirs, my desire to see it thru left at 16-2 DePaul.

Fast forwarded a chunk, now 35-13. Fast forwarded another chunk, still down 20. Fast forward to end of game, lost by 15 at Home to DePaul. Yes, THAT DePaul.

The whole thing took about 7 minutes. Great game Hawks.

he lost me after the nose dive to end 2016.
He's taken two top 10 teams and bottomed out to be a 7 seed. Then loses 5 of final 6 regular season games last year and really, if not for miracle shots should've been 7 of last 8.
The guy has no clue how to sustain any amount of success. Losing streaks, bad halfs, terrible shooting or pathetic defense...I don't get it. It's like his teams can only chew gum but ask them to walk and they choke and die.

You must have blacked out through the Lickliter years

I think this season will be on par with the Lickliter years. Starting 5 white guys and being awful is going to be real enticing look for recruits. Iowa basketball is positioned to be the joke of B1G this year. Dogfight with NW for last place.

We weren’t competitive in about 2/3 of the games in the Lickliter era. This has a similar feel.

Not in B1G...we were getting blown out by 20 in 1st half in Lickliter's last season. Those were real beatdowns, because we were struggling to score 20 in a half.

This loss to Depaul...sure Depaul was on fire from 3pt line, but they also stopped Iowa stone cold with their defense. Garza not able to get his shot off vs better competition and JoeW dissappeared...those are our best two players.

Heard that Fran’s wife was kicked out of a youth tournament last weekend and that Fran was being a total spaz. I wasn’t there so I didn’t see it with my own eyes, but this comes from a pretty good source. I will always support any kid that wears the black and gold, but Fran lost my support some time ago.
I worked the pro shop counter at a golf course for several years in college. Joe Lunardi (bracketology guy) came out to play with one of his buddies, who was a member at the course and pretty involved with Creighton athletics. The member knew I was a pretty big Iowa fan and brought it up while introducing me.

I talked Iowa shop with Joe for a couple minutes and, being a Philly guy, he knows the McCaffery family pretty well. During our conversation, he said something to the effect of “You think Fran is pretty intense, his wife Margaret is an absolute psycho” - pretty sure he used that word too - before expounding a little more on her screaming/cussing tendencies

CSB, but that was my long winded way of saying that your story wouldn’t be very surprising to me. It sounds like both the McCaffery’s have that reputation out east.

I would be thrilled if the next coach DIDN'T have any sons who played. Creates a bad dynamic IMO. Way back when was a big reason Tubby Smith was fired from Kentucky because he couldn't see his son wasn't a Kentucky level player.

Undoubtedly the best way to watch Iowa basketball.

We played a bad game,.. but this isn't "that" DePaul...
We'll see. They've been off the radar for many years. Maybe this is the year for them, but we got throttled on our Home court by DePaul, not Kansas.

It is just one game, but it was ugly.

Yeah, games tend to go a lot faster when there's zero drama...

I’m around a mostly black college basketball team five days a week. Three of them are my students. The same was the case at a previous employer in Texas. The blacks hung out with blacks, whites with whites, etc. Cultural commonality is everything.

You think a talented inner-city black recruit wants to spend 3 or 4 years hanging out the ghosts of Seth Gorney?

This is a systemic problem in IC that isn’t going to get better for a long time, if ever.

There’s a reason we constantly go back decades to BJ and Roy for our great bball memories.

I’ve talked about this a lot with my Hawkeye friends. Great post.

A friend of mine at work in Madison refs AAU tourneys. About 9 years ago, he was reffing a tourney in Wisconsin and some kid shot a 3 and my friend counted it as a three. Within seconds some guy came out of the stands and was yelling at the bench scoring ref that the kids foot was on the line. The other refs had to stop play and go over to the scoring bench to find out what was going on. My friend ended up throwing the guy out as he was interrupting the game being played and being obnoxious. His refereeing buddy told him shortly after he threw him out that he had just ejected Fran McCaffery. My friend didn't know who he was but didn't care either.

The Fran (and Margaret) temper tantrum stories keep leaking out. That may ultimately end up driving Fran out of Iowa City before the on the court performance does. One way or the other this ain't going to end well. That seems a pretty safe bet at this point.

I can appreciate the McCaffery’s passion, but at some point, you develop a reputation as a hothead or screamer, and people pretty much lose respect for you and disregard what you have to say

The hot head shtick only works if you are winning. Indiana fans tolerated ahole Bobby Knight for years and years ... until he started losing ... Personally, my basketball skills peaked in the 9th grade ... IF I had the skills to play at the Power 5 level, I can honestly say I'm not sure I'd want to play for Fran ... Something about Fran just seems sort of standoffish ... He's one of those coaches where I couldn't care less if he announced he took another job ... And agree 100

I have thought this would be a great thread topic for quite some time. Would you want to play for Fran?
